That IS exactly what happens! Many look at Mitchy's gender (rightfully, it's very interesting for the time!), but not as many look at their racial identity, if we were to imagine robots and humans as two separate "races."

It's emphasized that Mitchy is not like humans or robots: they're capable of special abilities like flying, super strength, and instant genderfluidity that humans lack, but the robots meet them they're so humanlike that they don't believe they're artificial at first.

And the MOMENT Mitchy finds out they are an artificial being, they go berserk, stage a robot uprising, and disintegrate.

They're also driven to such rage because they don't have "real" parents. This ignores that Mitchy did have a dad, Dr. Lawton, because he was only their adopted father. Not having blood relation is seen as a real problem, which relates to the hemato-nationalism bit! (see also the case to give Astro robot parents despite already having Ochan.)

These kinds of "hybrid" stories show up a LOT in tzk manga, because tzk, as we all know, LOVES transformation of all kinds. If he likes transforming from one thing to another, he of COURSE will explore something in between!

It just so happens that his opinions on the mixing of two groups, a lot of the time, is apprehensive. If you actually go into the paper this person cites, ben whaley refers to thomas lamarre in his conclusion:

anytime makube kills someone? lil song. i feel a song has to come after an accomplishment. this includes things that he thinks he's accomplished but hasn't actually (i.e. killing tzk/tzk surviving)

makube manipulating toppei? sings a little "you like me don't you, i saved your life~♫"

bad thing happens to makube? NO SONG. non-diegetically there might be an instrumental as if he's about to sing, but he doesn't, he sticks to talking

saigou scenes get NO SONG, because makube does not have the upper hand, saigou does. maybe the fakeout saigou death gets a song, like a lament??

after the real saigou death, there are no more songs. makube's breakdown is just dialogue. in fact, there wouldn't even be background music, it's just ear-splitting silence as he screams at nothing

so i get like "shikishima" is a pseudo-canon last name for kenichi because he only has that surname in lost world and nothing else, but i'm fine with it because quite literally what else do we have

but then it becomes a problem in the devil garon where kenichi is there along with another character named professor shikishima, and they interact pretty often!!!!

now imagining scenarios (for a manga i haven't read!) where kenichi and professor shikishima find out they share a last name despite not being related in any way
