man as a teenager I went to a lot of shitty house shows. it was the emo era but I also went to a lot of metal & hardcore gigs in the most random “venues” possible like tiny coffee shops in one horse towns & church basements and anyway 90% of the time I was five feet from the damn amps being absolutely psychic blasted by 100 decibels of sound on a school night

and so many of my friends in their 30s now have tinnitus & permanent hearing issues specifically from that time, but I went to shows with this girl who always alwaysss brought ear plugs & she’d hand them out to our little group in the mosh pit right before the set started, every time.

looking back on this is so funny 2 me because we were 14 years old at shows we probably shouldn’t have been allowed into, getting our shit absolutely rocked in the pit, one of my friends did bellybutton piercings for people in the bathrooms of these places, and one brave and ingenious child among us had the foresight to say “well…let’s at least protect our hearing.”

I owe her so much. If she called me on some strange quest today, she would have my sword.
