I’ve never tried to properly make a comic before. Like paying attention to lettering and paneling and going through all the steps and such.

One thing about alhaitham that I don’t see brought up a lot is that when he truly cares about someone, he respects their wishes, a lot. When his grandma’s last request to him was that he live a peaceful life, he took that to heart and still lives by it two decades later. He vowed to adopt a certain life philosophy that would make his grandma happy because that’s how much he respected her opinion and judgment. And when kaveh tells alhaitham that he regrets becoming friends with him, alhaitham completely stops talking to him for the next decade. It might seem like alhaitham did this because he stopped caring about kaveh the moment he denounced their friendship, but I think this was just his way of respecting kaveh’s wishes. If he truly believed a friendship with alhaitham ended up being regretful, he would no longer force him into one. I think it says a lot about alhaitham that he cares so deeply about what his loved ones want that he’ll simply listen to them without question.

But it’s so much more than that too. People like to paint those ten years as kaveh suffering and alhaitham being indifferent to their break up, but I don’t think that’s really the case. I truly think alhaitham is very sensitive when it comes to his loved ones. I think he took it to heart when kaveh berated him, and the rejection warded him away indefinitely. Imagine how alhaitham, for the first time in his life, found a genuine connection with another person, only to be brutally reminded of why he didn’t fit in with people- when he was just trying to show concern for kaveh’s life decisions. Honestly? I think it stung, and I believe he withdrew to protect his own feelings and that aforementioned peace. That no matter how much he cared, kaveh’s words were too much of a slap in the face for them to go back. I think he was so fearful that his emotional state would be disrupted that he had no choice but to pull away and force himself to stop caring. Gotta live a peaceful life, right?

I think alhaitham is the type of person who would’ve opened his heart up to his first true friend, the only person he could trust to understand him, and be scared off when said friend refused to understand. And again, I think it says a lot about alhaitham that an entire decade later, after being completely rejected by kaveh once before, he once again allowed him into his life- no, directly offered him a position. He lowered his guard and took kaveh in, knowing his peace would be disrupted and those old feelings would possibly be shaken up once again. Knowing he could get hurt. Just because kaveh needed alhaitham more than alhaitham needed to protect himself.

And I think it’s very interesting how the two most important people in his life are almost at odds in this regard. His grandma, who wants nothing but peace and serenity for him, and Kaveh, whose mere presence seems to disturb all that. I mean, what an interesting dilemma.

Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.

If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.

Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.)

part of the reason i love how bell hooks talks about masculinity is that she shows real compassion towards men suffering from the effects of toxic masculinity. she was conscious of how we need to unlearn the ways we talk about men + masculinity just as much as we need to unlearn the same for women + femininity. so many times ill see someone talking about toxic masculinity like (hyperbolizing here but only slightly) "these FUCKING STUPID BABY BITCHES won't MAN UP and go to a therapist!!!" and like. i get the anger. but you see feminists recreating patriarchal manhood by only promoting good behaviors through patriarchal frameworks. any use of the term "real men" is bad because it reifies the idea that manhood is a special title you must earn, and it is something possible to fail and fake. & as important as it is to promote sexual equality + the pleasure of non-cis-men, lots of people are essentially still working with the idea that men need sexual prowess to have worth but just shifting it slightly so there is more emphasis on women's pleasure. but I want cis men to think about their partners' pleasure because they care about their partners, not because they need to check a box in order to keep their man card. and don't get me started on small dick jokes– and the absolutely pitiful excuse people will use that "well, I don't believe it, but misogynistic men get upset when I say it, so it's okay!"

basically bell hooks is so fucking right. in order to create loving men we need to love men, simply for being alive, whether or not they are performing. as much as we need to actively unlearn misogyny (and we do), it's equally vital we unlearn patriarchal ways of seeing manhood. we can't just assume that taking a feminist perspective automatically means there is no work to be done there.

An ability that was meant to support twisted into an ability meant to attack. An ability meant to be used on others forever forced to only work on himself, granting him immeasurable power, but isolating him because of it. An ability that should have surrounded him with friends and teammates to help the most, but instead forced him to stand on his own and take all the responsibility for himself.
