Through the course Media Industries, I have learned a lot of in-depth material regarding media and how these industries are affecting others. Mass media has become a part of everyday life and many argue that it is affecting the way we perceive information and changing the way we think. Mass Media comes in many forms, a few of which are magazines, tv, and social media. Social media outlets curate news feed based on personal interests and beliefs, allowing networks to formulate its own world for an individual. This is dangerous because too many people on social media are only following what they believe and their interests, leaving no room for other ideas. The term Agenda Setting is used within media to set the public’s agenda, it puts ideas into our mind and tells us what to think about. It does not force us to think a certain way, but it manipulates our ideas and thoughts by leading our attention. Along with agenda setting, there is also priming and framing which all work together to shift the public eye. Priming in the media shows the context of a situation and provides understanding to set the stage for discussion. Framing in the media provides a focus to the audience, influencing the way in which a situation is evaluated. This is often used in politics and other news stories to shift the public’s view in a certain direction.
In the world of mass media, content and entertainment are provided in unlimited amounts to consumers. Although it may seem like an endless amount of media, most forms of media are actually owned by one of the six mass media conglomerates. While there are still many independent outlets, most major outlets are owned by a conglomerate. The top six mass media conglomerates according to WebFx are National Amusements, Disney, TimeWarner, Comcast, News Corp, and Sony. These six companies have control over multiple forms of media including newspapers, tv, video games, music streaming, and much more. Consumers choose media based on their interests, and if that outlet happens to be owned by a conglomerate there’s nothing they can do about it. These conglomerates are million dollar companies who have their ownership in almost every form of media, and if as a consumer you do not want to support them, it will be very hard to follow any form of media unless it is independent. The internet continues to gain capitalist development with monopolies running most of the show. As these monopolies grow in size they become more superior, kicking out other competitors. It is near impossible to do anything to stop these companies from growing, unless consumers protest them, which is a very unlikely scenario since only a handful dominate the internet.
Within media, is the news, a place in which people rely on to get their worldly information. These stories which are being reported may not hold the entire truth and the only people who know this are the reporters and journalists writing these stories. People rely on journalists to present non-biased news stories and to tell the full truth. However, in many news outlets, this is not the case. Many news outlets have their personal bias and may twist stories to suit their stance. Print news stories are more reputable than many online stories since almost anyone can post online and spread false information. While online sources are quicker and at your fingertips, print news is more reliable and accurate.
Through taking this class, I have learned a lot about the ins-and-outs of media and what effect it has on others. While social media is affecting the way in which we perceive one another, I do not feel personally that it changes how I feel about others. The internet is a communist environment that is run by only a few monopolies, but there is nothing I can do to avoid them since they run most of the internet. False news is reported every day, but I check my sources and make sure what I am reading is true. Through investigating media, I have not changed my habits but rather adjusted them so I do not become a mindless media consumer. By taking precautions, I have heightened my use of media and am able to understand the effects it has on consumers while not letting media consume me.

Over the years, violent video games have taken a lot of backlash for being linked to causing violent behavior in teens. Video games such as Halo, Call of Duty, and the recent most popular, Fortnite, all involve hunting down characters and killing them. Each game has a different level of graphics, some more extreme than others. The concern around these types of video games is that teens are learning violent behaviors from them. A lot of people have blamed video games like these for the cause of some school shootings. Saying that these games are training teens to be ok with shooting others. This is not the case however, many teens use video games as an escape and do it on their downtime. It’s a virtual world, yes teens may be killing multiple characters within a game, but none of it is real and they understand that. Killing people on a screen is much different than in real life, its a game and those playing understand this. This topic has been researched for years and there has never been conclusive evidence that these games cause violent behavior. While these games may not be setting the best example for developing minds, I do not believe that they have an effect on violent behaviors. For years, video games have been centered around the fact of killing others to win–those playing do not put this into perspective in real life and think they must kill everyone to succeed. Video games are a mindless form of entertainment that has been enjoyed for years. If violent video games really had an effect on those playing, we would be seeing a lot more violence in society than we already do. In my view, I do not see violent video games as a threat to the minds who participate.

If I were a reality TV producer, I would like to do something different compared to modern day shows. I think I would create a show about college students, following the day in the life of many individuals. I would show many different types of students, ones who are working hard in academics, those who party all the time, and those who are involved in clubs and sports. I would like my show to be relatable and show the true scenes of college. Also, discuss the difficulties of affording college and those who work part-time jobs. I think following around a modern college student would be interesting because there are so many people who have different views towards college and I would find it interesting to see them. College students today are very different from those in the mid 90s. Back then, college was super affordable and was a fraction of the cost that it is today. I also think it would be interesting to interview the parents of the college students to really understand the differences between generations.
Reality TV is so attractive to many because it is showing “real” people just going about their lives. It seems like mindless TV, which most of it is, but for some they find comfort in watching others. Most reality TV however, is scripted and most of what the viewer sees has been directed in some form. Even for reality TV stars, their life is not always super exciting, that is why a lot of what happens on these shows are staged. Surprisingly, a lot of people who watch reality TV believe it, that it is one hundred percent true content. Reality TV is great for advertisements since they can be simply placed in a shot or have one of the people using the item.

In the article “Harvey Weinstein and the Economics of Consent”, Brit Marling discusses her struggle to become successful in Hollywood and the sexist treatment that goes along with it. Marling examines the traits of Hollywood and comes to a conclusion that men have the most power over success and women and their bodies are often taken advantage of. She goes into describing how roles she auditioned for in her early years were for “Bikini Babe 2” and “Blonde 4”, extras with no names that were used purely for sexual exploitation. Another audition she went to was for a nurse, she recalls feeling like a “sex object” and stating “if we were going to be cast we’d better sell what was desired—not our artistry, not our imaginations—but our bodies.” This is a huge problem in Hollywood, many actresses are sold for their looks and not their artistic capabilities. Many who want to become a famous actress are often judged upon their looks or weight and told to change if they want to make it. Soon Marling quit these auditions and started working a day-job. She however, continued working in Hollywood, co-writing and starring in two films which premiered at Sundance in 2011.
Marling chooses to give a brief story of her Hollywood experience and its apparent sexual discrimination before going into her own encounter with a powerful man of the industry. It was 2014 when she was asked to meet with Harvey Weinstein, thinking she could finally make it, meeting a big-time producer. However, to her horror and many other women, Weinstein had no interest in making her a star. Instead, Weinstein used his powerful position to lure women to his hotel for their “meeting” and trying to pursued them to have sex with him. Many, including Marling knew Weinstein’s amount of power in Hollywood, he had the ability to make or break you. The day she was invited to his room and left before any sexual encounters, she told herself, “even if this very powerful man never gave her a job in any of his films, even if he blacklisted her from other films, she could make her own work on her own terms and thus keep a roof over her head.” In today’s society, women still have to fight for equality and often work a lot harder to become successful. Men have so much more power compared to women, and many women often feel they must go through them to reach success. Hollywood is a place in which this needs to change first, women need to start getting paid the same as men co-stars and being treated properly for their abilities and not their looks. By making this change, not only is it a huge step for women actresses, but also for other young girls who idolize them. Making these changes in Hollywood could only have a domino effect on the rest of society and may finally be able to bridge the gap between men and women.

Traditional radio broadcasting is nowhere near as popular as it was when it was first invented. Radio today is still listened to, but the audience has shrunk. Many who listen are older generations who have not gotten into streaming services. The appealing factor of radio is that it is free and is broadcasting something almost anytime of the day. However, there often might be static, commercials, and music that might not be your taste playing—these being a few disadvantages of radio. With online streaming, it is similar to radio with ads but you can pick the stations and genres you wish to listen to. Also, if you are willing to pay, you can be ad free and pick any music you want. This can be seen as a disadvantage and advantage, while you are being provided unlimited amounts of music, advertisement free, you are also paying a price for it. Online streaming has grown in popularity over the years because it allows people their personalized music taste right on their phone for any convenience. Streaming services has taken away from physical CDs, people have no need to buy physical copies since they can just buy it right on their phone. Streaming services have also lead to the decline in radio, since it being an easier and more advanced.
With online streaming and radio, there are many ways to distribute music in today’s society. Music is split into genres including hip-hop, rock, pop, and many others to suit the interests of its listeners. Many sites such as Pandora can personalize sations to allow the listeners the best experience while providing music curated to their own tastes. While there are thousands of streaming websites, younger generations often steer away from the radio. However, radio is still a successful industry since adding online streaming as well to compete with other streaming sites. Many listeners want to choose the music they listen to rather than having a random playlist formed for them. Services like Spotify and Apple Music offer memberships to listeners which allows them to pick and choose the music they want. While the other sites are free, you get a bigger selection of what you want personally for paying a small price with services like Spotify. Depending on your music taste and how often you listen, some may choose to stream for free or pay to get a larger variety of music.

The recording industry is one of the most profitable and difficult industries to get into. It is very hard to become successful in the music industry since there is so much competition. Much of the music which is dispersed is credited to multiple people rather than just the artist. It is a tricky industry and can be hard to make a profit with the amount of people it takes to produce a song. In the context of the music industry, the term fragmentation means that there are thousands of companies producing music they would like to sell. These companies are known as independants because they are not owned by major companies such as Sony or Warner Music Group, which are some of the main distributors in the music industry. The number of independent companies has shockingly soared in the last decade, becoming the third largest distributor in the United States.
One of the reasons for the new-found success of independent recording companies is the affordable and personal digital technology that has allowed them to create high-quality music. The availability of this technology has lead to the rise of independent recording companies. Many of the independent companies circulate their products to stores or sell them directly on the internet rather than selling to a major distributor. Such a huge success in the independant industry is unusual. However, the major recording companies still hold a lot of power. Because they represent many popular artists, they have access to radio stations, stores, and websites that independants may not have access to necessarily. Being large organizations, they also can afford to promote their artists.
Having good distribution tactics is vital to becoming successful in the recording industry. Companies must have the ability to place recordings where people will hear them and want to buy them. Without this, it is likely that the chance of it being successful will be very low. Much of what goes into distribution is the promotional aspects. Promotion involves using a variety of media to lead target audiences to learn about a recording to encourage them to buy it. The recording industry is highly dependant on other media platforms to inform audiences about new music. Since promotionals take a lot of money, this affects the independent companies who cannot afford such prices. They must find other affordable ways in which to advertise their music in hopes of it selling.

When I was in my teens, I was obsessed with magazines. I had subscriptions to J-14, Bop, Teen Vogue, and Seventeen. I loved receiving them in the mail, it was like getting a little present every time. I never got rid of my magazines and let them pile up in stacks in my room, even though I never went back and read them again. My favorite magazine at the time was Seventeen, I was a bit too young to be reading it, but that is why I liked it. I loved reading true stories of girls and their experiences, also doing the stupid little beauty hacks or reading my favorite section, Embarrassing Moments. I liked the experience of magazines, they were physical and often held little surprises on the inside. Such as Seventeen would have perfume or beauty samples, while J-14 and Bop had posters of the hottest teen celebrities. I liked the physical aspect of magazines and flipping through them while lying on my bed. It made me feel like a cliche teenage girl in a movie. All of these aspects that I enjoyed are not capable online. Online magazines take away the whole experience of receiving it in the mail, sitting down to read it, and discovering little goodies on the inside. While online magazines take away its true form, there are a few things that online can do and print cannot. Online can provide links to other related articles, they may include videos or other graphics, and online commentary from other readers. Although I no longer read many magazines, I would much prefer to pick one up than to read it online. The whole idea and construction of a magazine is destroyed once put online. Reading a physical magazine and flipping through the pages is a much more enjoyable experience rather than scrolling through it online.

While there are many reputable news sources, there are also many biased and fake news sources too. I personally do not consume enough news and would like to extend my news sources. I do not read newspapers or magazines and get the majority of my news from the internet. I am one of the many people who read the brief story of something or just the headline and often do not go deeper. I follow accounts on Instagram such as BuzzFeed, Worldnews, the WhiteHouse, and other popular culture news sources. These sources provide quick and easy news, they are not long and boring stories but instead short and gets to the main point. Although, many of these stories could be considered fake news or biased, I do not look into them or follow their sources. I do not think these news stories affect me because if it was a story I really cared about I would look into it and find greater details. When I see a story online, I may read it but not necessarily believe it. It is those who believe and share every story they see which harms the news industry overall and gives more power to fake news.
The everyday stories which are being reported may not hold the entire truth and the only people who know this are the reporters and journalists writing these stories. People rely on journalists to present non-biased news stories and to tell the full truth. However, in many news outlets, this is not the case. Many news outlets have their personal bias and may twist stories to suit their stance. I think the most relevant newspapers are those who present true journalism by representing both sides of a story unbiased. News sources like the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal are good sources for this. While they both may lean towards different sides at times, they are both reliable and hold a good reputation. Print news stories are more reputable than many online stories since almost anyone can post online and spread false information. Printed magazines and newspapers have fact-checkers to make sure they are not distributing any false information. While online sources are quicker and at your fingertips, print news is more reliable and accurate.

In Chapter 7 of Media Today, it discusses the book industry and the ins and outs of the business. There are many steps to publishing, along with various roles people play in the succession of a book. The job of a acquisitions editor is to recruit and sign new authors while also producing a number of novels that have a certain sales goal. After receiving finished work, the acquisition editor passes a completed manuscript off to the developmental editor. This editor reads over the material and edits it while making sure the structure is clear. After, the work is passed onto a production editor to arrange all the technical aspects of the book until the book is completely proofed. For acquisitions editor, picking out a manuscript may sometimes be difficult. The acquisitions editor have to find topics which will interest people and then find an author who can make a profit through their writing.
The way in which manuscripts make it to the acquisitions editor is through a literary agent. The job of a literary agent is marketing “the client's manuscripts to editors, publishers, and other buyers.” Literary agents understand the industry very well and tend to market towards the best suited authors and editors. This can save a lot of work for the editors by literary agents picking the right author for the job. Literary agents perform various services for authors. They connect the author's work with appropriate publishers, negotiate contracts, ensure royalty payments, and handle any problems between author and publisher. Literary Agents can also help new authors get public recognition and known in the media. They also help with the process of review, publication, and distribution of authors' works.

In the article, “The Internet’s Unholy Marriage to Capitalism” by John Bellamy Foster and Robert W. McChesney, they discuss the origins of the internet and the “capitalist invasion” that has taken over the web. They discuss the beginning of monopolies and how the internet service provider allowed access to Americans but were only controlled by a few firms that had already dominated the telephone and television industry. Both industries had supported deregulation in the 1990s, which in turn would leave them with more power. The deregulations left a few giant companies and no regulations with mergers between phone and cable companies. The article discusses how search engines like Google “hold 70 percent of the search engine market’, with only a few other giant companies. This being another example of the internet's power over competition and consumers.
The article continues to discuss the rising capitalist atmosphere within the internet, stating that some economists say the monopolist will only be “temporary.” However, the article disagrees and states that there is little evidence to support this and with the extreme amount of power monopolies hold, it is unlikely to see them gone anytime soon. These monopolies are also leading a decline in journalism, since most articles are now read on the internet. Among journalists, advertisers have also been forced to take to the internet since people no longer read newspapers or magazines. These monopolies are not only taking over the internet but are also destroying other businesses tactics and they way in which they make a profit. Although being one of the greatest inventions in America, the internet has succumbed to capitalism. The article discusses the factor of, Net Neutrality, the principle that an internet service provider has to provide access to all sites, content, and applications at the same speed, under the same conditions without blocking or preferencing any content. Although the Net Neutrality Act was not passed, if it was set in place, it would limit the power over monopolies, making the internet more free and decreasing the capitalist environment.

Disney, one of the biggest and most well-known conglomerates, owns a piece of almost every form of media, from films to books and even sports. This chart from PBS.org shows just how many forms of media and companies Disney has ownership to. Consumers may not recognize some companies which Disney owns, however, it is likely that most of the media an average person consumes is either owned by Disney or another one of the six conglomerates. In hindsight, there is nothing as consumers we can really do to stop these companies from gaining more power in the media industry. It is almost impossible to use any form of mass media without being connected to one of the main conglomerates. This being said, it does not change the way in which I feel about the media I consume. Like many others, I do not think about the higher up corporations controlling my media. Although these big companies have ultimate control over mass media, I still have the ability to choose what I consume and how it affects me.

The very popular hip-hop artist, Kanye West has released many albums over the years. West’s fame has grown since being a producer for Jay Z and Alicia Keys to starting his own rapping career. Much of West’s earliest music focused on detailed lyrics and meaningful raps; however, over the years his music has deteriorated. Some could say that his music is still only popular now because of how famous he is, not for the music itself. Most of his modern music has lost the touch of personality and has turned into mainstream songs filled with autotune. His last album “Ye” received generally positive reviews from critics, received gold for the sales of over five-hundred thousand albums, and was ranked as the 50th most popular album of the year by Billboard. Although the album was popular and the sales were high, the actual content of the album was underwhelming. The album was only twenty minutes long and many of the songs were not lyrical masterpieces. Listening to the album, I find it hard to even understand what West is saying let alone understand what he means.
Personally, I do not see the appeal to Kanye’s music and feel as though people only still listen because of how famous he is and expect something extreme from him. Which in many cases is true, Kanye is known for controversial lyrics and voicing his opinions to the public. Those who follow and listen to his music may not be for the appeal of the songs but rather to hear what controversial things Kanye is saying. Listening to his most recent album makes me question his fame and how he’s gotten so far on his lyrics. In his song “All Mine” from Ye, lyrics “you supermodel thick, damn, that ass bustin’ out the bottom” is the chorus in the song. These lyrics are not only offensive, but are also a contradiction to the message Kanye sends in the album’s closing song “Violent Crimes.” While simultaneously rapping about how he treats women and objectifies their bodies, he also discusses wanting more for his own daughter. In essence, Kanye wants it both ways; to continue treating women as he has been while also expecting men to do the opposite for his daughter.

In this ad by Samsung, a slim naked woman is pictured with the words “True beauty is curved.” Samsung, an electronics company, is advertising for their new curved notebook. While a naked woman has nothing to do with this product, they choose to use one to represent the laptop being sold. Not only is this woman being compared to a laptop, but also the words “true beauty is curved” makes an unsettling claim towards women. This statement makes the assumption that women must have curves to be beautiful. Although the brand is selling a laptop, it appears instead that they are stating what beauty towards women looks like. By picturing a naked woman, it is destined to draw eyes. In this ad, Samsung is marketing towards males by comparing a woman’s curves to that of a computer, making the product more appealing and ‘sexy'.
Many advertisers take this route of picturing beautiful men or women to draw the eyes of consumers. This tactic has been used in perfume, clothing, food, makeup, and various other items on the market. Instead of showing just the product, advertisements are often plastered with beautiful people. This tactic is often used, showcasing if you buy a certain product, you will also be one of these beautiful people. Often ads like these will gain publicity for their controversial images, and in doing so gains coverage for the brand. Advertisers often deliberately do this to get members of the public interested in them. Although the coverage may be negative, it is still publicity and gets people talking.

The show The Office depicts the lives of everyday people working at a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. The show has a large range of viewers, young and old. The diversity in the show is not very high, only having one black employee, Stanely, and one Indian employee, Kelly. Often, their boss Micheal is prone to make some insensitive joke about their race. Obviously, racism is not a joke, especially in today’s world. Due to this, viewers may take Micheals jokes as offensive and chose not to view the show. However, Kelly and Stanley are not the only people Micheal jokes about, his character is a quirky man who often makes insensitive jokes to anyone he interacts with. Along with racist jokes, Micheal is also seen poking fun at Oscar, the only gay man in the office. Once again, these sort of jokes are not acceptable but go along with Micheal’s character. Oscar, being much more intelligent than Micheal, often ignores his comments knowing he has the mind of a kid and does not know better.
Micheal is not a character that should be portrayed as a villain, but rather as character with no filter and will dive at any chance to make a joke. Most of his comments are harmless and are never said in a serious manner. Micheal is also known to make sexist comments, his favorite being “that’s what she said” following something someone else said. Although he may make these comments, that does not mean that he is sexist but rather a man trying to be funny. To many viewers, Micheal is not seen as a horrible sexist, rascist, and homophobic person. He is a man who is always looking for a joke to tell, and sometimes they are offensive, but takes responsibility for. None of these topics are a laughing matter, but the way in which the show is portrayed, takes the seriousness away from it. The show has an overall dry sense of humor and some comments may be offensive to viewers but that is the basis of the show.
Below are some remarks Micheal made to Oscar and Stanely.

In chapter three of Media Today, agenda setting is discussed and the effects it has on influencing the thoughts in the media. Agenda setting is the idea that the media sets the public’s agenda, it puts ideas into our mind and tells us what to think about. It does not force us to think a certain way, but it manipulates our ideas and thoughts by leading our attention. Along with agenda setting, there is also priming and framing which all work together to shift the public eye. Priming in the media shows context of a situation and provides understanding to set the stage for discussion. Framing in the media provides a focus to the audience, influencing the way in which a situation is evaluated. All of these work together in the media to shift the public’s opinion and create thoughts for us.
In the film, Thank You for Smoking, Nick Naylor is a spokesman for Big Tobacco and promotes the use of cigarettes. Nick’s job in the movie is to publicize smoking and make it look “cool” in the media and movies. Nick defends smoking with research, (which has been done by tobacco companies) that there is no definite evidence that smoking causes lung cancer. Nick promotes smoking through the media and feeds them the idea that it is not harmful. This movie uses agenda setting, priming, and framing all to manipulate the public’s opinion on smoking. By Nick promoting the use of cigarettes in movies, the media, and claiming there are no harmful effects, he is able to shift a part of the public view. Through agenda setting, Nick does not tell the audience or force them to smoke, but is able to put these thoughts into the audiences’ heads and is able to persuade their thoughts.

In chapter one of Media Today, many criticisms facing the media are discussed. Mass media has become a part of everyday life and many argue that it is affecting the way we perceive information and changing the way we think. Mass Media comes in many forms, a few of which are magazines, tv, and social media. These outlets produce material targeted towards their viewers and turn people into believing what they wanna see. Social media outlets curate news feed based on personal interests and beliefs, allowing networks to formulate its own world for an individual. This is dangerous because too many people on social media are only following what they believe and their interests, leaving no room for other ideas. Social media is also affecting the way we perceive the world and individuals. Many social media outlets portray beautiful people living glorious lives, creating a false sense of reality to those on the outside. This creates a great amount of insecurity amongst younger generations and makes them believe they must achieve this glorious life for themselves.
Media should be held responsible for the affects it is having on the lives of others. Outlets are able to control what they produce and should be mindful of how it is affecting those who consume it. People need to become more aware of the media outlets they use and how they may be changing the way they think. Mass Media has a great impact on the way we think and perceive certain events. Those who chose to receive their news from TV may have their views manipulated. Many news outlets report the same story, but have a different take on it, and depending on current views, people often choose sources that follow the same ideas and beliefs as them. This creates a two-sided world of news and it makes it difficult to stay in the middle between the lefts and the rights views. Another problem in the media is the extreme amount of fake news that is being spread. People who like, share, and follow fake news not only are deceiving themselves, but also those that follow them. In the hectic world of media, it soon will be hard to tell the truth from the fake.
