FROM A CABINET TO A CONSOLE turned 3 today!

This was my first sighting of this beautiful Cabinet I saw in a local second hand shop. To me it looked like a typical home sideboard from the late 1960′s early 1970′s. And as nice as it looked I knew I could make something more with it. But of course those front draws and two doors would have to go.

For me it really stood out among all the other furniture on offer. It felt like it was screaming out “Buy me, Buy me now.” Which of course I did.

This was the Cabinet before all the work. And of course none of the front draws or the two doors went to waste as I used them all up for the interior paneling for the finished Console.

I know that many vintage Console designs tended to conceal it’s technology of the day, making it look more like house sideboard furniture, but I wanted to make something where everything was on show ie the tv, the hi-fi unit and the small vinyl storage area for the records.

Above: The finished Cabinet, now a Console with hi-fi, Radio, CD player, tv Hardisc Recorder and 20″ Logik flat tv screen. And it was just luck that the Cabinet fitted in the only available space in my room.

The tv sound comes out of the two big Sony speakers either side of the unit as the tv is plugged into the TEAC hi-fi auxillary plug.

All the measurements seemed to work out just fine so that I could make a small storage space for my Jazz and Rock n Roll vinyl records.

So I’m quite pleased with the outcome, and not a single old fashioned valve in sight.

It was certainly a happy six months making it. At times I came unstuck with some of the re-construction. But with perseverance I eventually got there. And as it sits in the corner of my flat I can’t help fussing and fawning over it. Naturally I have started collecting Vinyl again... mainly Jazz, Swing and Vintage Rock n’ Roll.

The final part of all the work was fitting in a tv screen, although I did later update the Alba tv to a better model, the Logik 20″ screen tv.

The frame I made that needed to be attached around the tv so that I could fit the whole thing into the Cabinet.

So will the tv and it’s outer frame finally fit into the Cabinet. Thankfully it did. It was a perfect fit.

The TEAC Record player/Radio and CD player fits nicely in. If had been any wider then I would have had to make less room for the vinyl Record storage space.

And as you lift up the arm of the record player your hand brushes gently against the soft beige suede on the upholstered side panel.

Things getting a bit messy in the corner work area of my flat. There’s still more suede upholstery to put in along with the record deck and then finally the tv.

The below image shows the beginnings of the reconstruction with the right hand side draws still intact. While on the left side I’ve managed to fit in the first speaker frame cover.

Fun at Christmas time with Tom & Jerry on the Console tv, although I did remove that inferior Alba tv and changed it for a better 20″ Logik tv.
