is college it?
The argument on whether college is the best option for students after graduating high school has been going on for quite some time now. Many argue that college is the next step after graduating high school. In this post, I will discuss the pros and cons of attending college vs. not
College gives you a lot of responsibilities to handle at once. You have to balance your homework, a job, social life, and a sleep schedule, so learning the skill of managing your time is crucial. While you can still learn to manage your time without attending college, furthering your education by attending college also teaches you discipline if you are not able to properly manage your responsibilities. For instance, if you go out every time you have free time, you are probably not doing your homework which will cause your grades to go down and you may end up failing a class you need to graduate which is bad just by itself, but on top of all that all the money you are spending on going to college goes down the drain. By learning to be self sufficient you do not need to face these consequences, and in the future you will know the consequences will become more severe. Imagine you are a teacher, and you have two options; you can go out with your friends, or you can stay in and grade papers. Well, if you went out with your friends every time you were stuck in this position, you are likely to lose your job since you are not doing your job. By going to college, you are able to learn to manage your time responsibly.
Besides experience, and learning to be self sufficient, going to college expands your career options. Several high paying jobs require you to have a college degree. While there are still many jobs that have a high pay who do not require a college degree, having a degree gives you a plethora of choices to pick from.
Going to college is not the path everybody takes. Though the college experience comes with many new lessons, it should not be looked at as the only option for student after receiving their high school diploma. For instance, Malcolm Little, otherwise known as Malcolm X, spent time in jail during the years he would have spent in college. Malcolm X was given jail time for larceny and breaking and entering, but he claims that the education he received in jail benefited him more than if he was to attend college. In jail, Malcolm X would read with the down time he had, even if that down time was during the hours he was supposed to be sleeping. With all the time he used invested in reading the dictionary and various scholars, he gained a knowledge he believes he would not have received anywhere else.
Many of us have been told since we were little that going to college is what you are supposed to do after you graduate high school, but going to college is not the path we all take, for example Dwayne Lowery did not follow this route. Lowery is a man who grew up dispising the sports section of the newspaper because it is what his dad would read every morning, and also graduated at the bottom of his high school class. With little to no literacy skills, Lowry began working at a day job reading water meters in a municipal utility department. During his breaks, he would find newspaper in the break room that he found himself becoming interested in. He began reading the news on a day to day basis and eventually applied for a union-sponsored grant that allowed him to travel to Washington D.C for a union activity. While there he had a hard time reading, and he knew that if he spent more time reading in high school that he would have been better with his literacy skills. After he came back home he was offered a full time job as a field staff representative. Lowry’s writing began to blossom, and his knowledge was growing like never before. Even though Lowry did not take the college route, he took a different path that benefited him in his own unique way.
We should not feel that college is the only choice we have after graduating high school. There are many options on what to do post graduation, and we should be encouraged to explore more of what life has to offer before making a decision on what we should be doing for the rest of our lives.
