“It’s only, like, the first month of summer?” Jace gaped at her in disbelief - not once had he ever seen somebody revising during summer vacation. “You do you. Although it doesn’t hurt to set the book aside and have a little fun with friends,” he added, his palms heavily resting on the log to support himself at he heavily leaned back, head turning to gaze at the bonfire. “Not to brag, but I can dribble a ball for three hours straight without fucking up,” he said, obnoxiously turning his nose up obnoxiously for an extra dramatic effect. Jace dabbled in sports - he did enjoy basketball, in particular. 

Her eyebrows rose at his disbelief and a blush grew on her cheeks, clutching her book to her chest. “Well, that’s me. Being a head. Being the academic of the family,” she stated with a smile, clearing her throat and shifting slightly. She shrugged, glancing around at the tipsy teens and even tipsier adults -- who strangely didn’t seem to even care that the punch had been spiked. “Everyone seems to be having plenty of fun without me,” she stated with a simple shrug, gesturing around, “I’ve never really been to -- a party.” She hummed, letting out a laugh and she wrinkled her nose. “That totally sounds like bragging, but I’ll let it slide this time.” She shifted slightly on the log, sinking her teeth into her cheek as her eyes flicked over the flames. She glanced over at him again. “I’m sure you’d rather be hanging out with Delta -- or anyone else! You don’t have to sit here with me. I swear I’m okay with just reading.”

Jace’s eyes roamed around the campfire, searching for Meg. Ever since their little accidental interaction, he never had gotten the chance to talk to her. Sure, he’d seen her during auditions, and then callbacks, and he had been more than delighted to find out that they were going to be working together - as Troy and Sharpay. The small part of him was disappointed that she wasn’t going to be his leading lady, though. He perked up when he saw her sitting alone by the fire, seemingly engrossed in her book. Jace grinned. Perfect. “Hey, what’cha doin’?” He asked, plopping down beside her, “Congrats on Sharpay, by the way.” 

Meg had been trying her best to avoid him ever since their encounter. Delta had already made her impression on him, and she was a no-drama type of gal, especially when it came to her sisters. She looked up when he greeted her, her eyebrows raising and she cleared her throat, a smile growing on her lips. “Reading. For school for when we get back,” she stated with a smile, shifting over slightly to give him some more room, “Kinda boring.”  She folded over the corner of the book and closed it, setting on her lap and she let out a laugh. “Thanks. Congrats, Mr. Bolton. Hopefully you can dribble a basketball as well as you can sing.”

“Hey there, Superstar!” Mark greeted, sitting down next to her and giving her a nudge with his shoulder. “Congrats! You killed it. Killed it!” Mark didn’t pick favorites, but he always rooted for the underdogs, and Meg didn’t seem as confident as she deserved to be with her talent. Mark’s goal was to help with that over the summer. “I’m so excited to work with you!”

She jumped at his greeting, looking up and letting her eyes flick over his face. “Thanks!” she stated with a laugh, tucking her hair behind her ear and she shifted slightly to give him some more room. “I never would’ve thought that Honey, Honey from Mamma Mia! would’ve gotten me Sharpay -- who’s probably the favorite of most people I know. I’ve got some big shoes to fill,” she breathed with a laugh, folding the corner of the page over so she didn’t lose her spot.

The blonde had been so stoked to get Sharpay. She’d gone into a bathroom and did her own little happy dance, but then she really needed to focus. She knew that she was gonna have to work hard, prove that she wasn’t just Delta’s twin or Allie’s little sister. She got a supporting role, and that was definitely the biggest role she’d ever landed. The blonde had joined everyone at the bonfire, but she found a spot near the fire with her highlighter -- highlighting some things in her book for her English class. Her teeth sunk into her cheek and she bit on the cap of her pen, her eyes skimming over the words.

“We did, actually,” Jace said sheepishly. “Did a bit of singing, I mean.” Their voices meshed well together; it was impressive. Jace had been in numerous collaborations with other cover artists, but Delta was definitely one of the best people he’s ever sung with. “I do, yeah. I’m not used to it.” Realising that he was probably sounding like an egotistic asshole, he quickly added. “Honestly. I can’t even read through my comments section without blushing.” He laughed, eyes briefly following the movements of her fingers. 

“For me, it does. I mean, if you keep using something too much, you’re going to wear it off eventually, right? I don’t want to risk it.” Jace made sure to take care of his voice, drinking a lot of water and avoiding caffeine. “All Delta’s?” He blinked, looking over at the stack of papers in the blonde’s arms - damn. He didn’t know whether he should be impressed, or horrified. “That’s… Passionate. Which is a good thing, I mean - she’ll definitely stand out. Have you decided on a song?” Jace asked, genuinely curious. Meg seemed to enjoy talking about her sister more than herself. “Also, you look like you’d rock Sue Snell. Carrie, even.”

“Oh! That’s -- that’s awesome. I’m sure that you two sounded amazing, and I’m sure that you two will have -- plenty of time to do duets. I’m sure she’d love it. She’s always wanted a duet partner that could meet her level of talent,” she rambled, giving him a smile, but she could feel herself grow more and more awkward the more they talked. Obviously, he liked Delta. Who wouldn’t? And she didn’t want her to be mad at her for talking to Jace.  Meg’s eyebrows rose at that... confident statement, licking her lips as he added his statement to it. “You? You have no reason to blush at someone complimenting you. I’m sure you get them a lot.” 

The blonde let out a laugh and she nodded. “Well, my sister’s currently Anna on Broadway and Delta’s following right behind her. She’s probably gonna end up on Broadway. She’s worked so hard and she’s so -- so talented, and she deserves it,” she stated with a smile. Her eyebrows rose at his question about her and she shook her head, letting out a soft laugh. “No, which is why I should probably go and um -- figure it out,” she stated with a slight smile. She let out a laugh and she shook her head. “I’m definitely more of an ensemble type of gal.” She cleared her throat and she shifted between her feet and she cleared her throat. “It was -- really nice to meet you, Jace,” she stated with a smile, before she cleared her throat and turned on her heel to head the opposite direction she’d been heading earlier.

“Yeah, she’s talented.” Jace laughed, oblivious to her reaction. “Great singer. All of us are,” he added. “We wouldn’t be here, otherwise.” He shoved his hands in his pockets, blinking wildly at Meg’s words. He didn’t know whether to blush or not, but it took all of his self control to repress a laugh - Meg was hilariously adorable. And - he can’t help but think - was very, very different from her sister. “A pretty girl complimenting me? It’s my lucky day,” he winked playfully. 

Having grown up as an only child, Jace never really had the trouble of being overshadowed by siblings - but judging from Meg’s words, he could already tell that Meg was the type to prioritise her sisters before herself. Which was… Slightly concerning. Meg’s smile was contagious, and Jace found himself grinning back at her. “I’ve been doin’ a ton of audition prep last night, I’m giving my vocal chords a few hours of rest. I don’t wanna head for auditions with a scratchy throat.” He eyed the papers in her arms, “On the other hand, you look pretty busy. Any particular shows you’re aiming for?”

“She’s super talented! Incredibly talented. I’m sure that you both would would sound great if you did a duet.” She wrinkled her nose slightly and she shrugged, sinking her teeth into her cheek and letting her eyes flick along his face. “Yeah. She’s one of the best.” She wanted to smack herself for the way she was acting. She didn’t act like this ever. Delta had obviously already made an impression on him, so she should’ve just kept talking her up. Make her look good, because that was what sisters did, right? Her eyebrows rose slightly at his compliment, biting on her cheek in an attempt to keep herself from blushing and from smiling too hard.  “I’m sure you get lots of compliments from lots of people,” she responded, clearing her throat and tucking her hair behind her ear. “Oh! Well, then you’re ahead of the game,” she stated with a soft laugh, shifting slightly, “Does vocal rest actually work?” She liked it whenever her sisters were on vocal rest. It kept things quiet around the house. It allowed Meg to focus on her school. Her eyebrows rose, looking down at the papers in her arms and she sunk her teeth into her cheek. “Oh, I’m far from picking a song. These are all Deltas from all of her shows and stuff she’s added to her repertoire,” she paused at his question, shrugging once more, “Not really. I’m -- auditioning for all of them. I’m just aiming for being in ensemble, honestly.”

“Your sisters are really nice then. It’s good to have support from family.” He replied as he let her take the sheet music from his hands. Peter nodded in response. “Of course. It would’ve been rude to leave you to pick them up by yourself. I mean, we did bump into each other, so…I feel a bit responsible as well.” A need to be witty overpowered his usual nerves before he could stop. “Takes two to tango, am I right?”

“Oh yeah! Sure,” she stated with a slight smile, clearing her throat. Though, nice wasn’t the way that most people described Delta, but she supported her. She was her twin, after all.  She let out a laugh and she shrugged. “I was the one who wasn’t paying attention, but I appreciate the offer. I really do.” She let out a soft laugh and she nodded. “I suppose, but someone has to lead the tango, and I’m the one who wasn’t paying attention in the first place.”

Alpha: Realism is pessimism with good PR. There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting your hopes up. Sure you'll be sad in the (very unlikely) event that you do actually end up in an ensemble. But if you use that energy in a positive way. it'll also make you work harder for next time and then you ABSOLUTELY will not. Also I'll literally throw every book you own into the lake if you ever mention "summer reading" to me ever again.

Meg: No! It's not. It's called not getting your hopes up for them to get crushed later! It's like a nice little pillow. No! I like my books. Don't throw away my books. I won't mention summer reading to you ever again, even though it exists.

Meg: I’m just not gonna get my hopes up! I’m being realistic! And there’s nothing wrong with being ensemble. Being ensemble is fun and it’d give me plenty of time to do some summer reading!

Delta: UM a callback is ALWAYS important! Unless you got called back for like, Norma or Kelsi or something. Spill!

Meg: But! Wouldn’t you rather play your dream role not at camp? Wouldn’t you rather do it professionally...or in college or something??

Meg: I got called back for Sharpay and Sue! It’s really not that big of a deal. The roles will probably go to someone else!!

Meg: Isn’t Adelaide one of your dream roles or something??? Either way you can check one or the other off on your dream roles bucket list!

Meg: Yeah! A couple, but that’s not important! How are you gonna prepare for your call backs?
