The Light Pavilion by Lebbeus Woods with Christoph a. Kumpusch is a “large scale installation at Steven Holl’s recently completed sliced porosity block in Chengdu China” (Woods). The Installation of steel rods and glass is four stories hight with winding sets of stairs leading up to each new floor. Woods Wanted to design a new kind of space, a type of space we may not have experienced before. The spaces only function is to encourage “us to encounter new dimensions of experience” (Woods).

Designed for the senses this space provides a pleasant memory and therefore people remember their experience within this building. According to Fernanda Castro designing for the senses is important in forming a memorable space

Re purposing the little things
Looking at the life cycle of a can. It takes a long process to be turned into a can yet it only gets used once. We pick it up from the supermarket, empty the contents then chuck away (often not even re cycled properly).
What if we got people to re think what they buy. Allow people to build a mindset that they can use something more than once, you can create another purpose for it. Start to re think this notion of chucking everything away.

From walking around the city it is clear that the majority of people are not fully taking in and appreciating their surroundings. They are simply just trying to get from A to B. I want people to be more mindful and be aware of their surroundings and appreciate the little things.

More exciting...
I want to make it more exciting than just patterns on a wall. I dont know if people will fully understand what I am trying to say.
For it to be more exciting I think it needs to be more engaging, something moving or the public can add to?

Exploration
I am starting to wonder if it has to be all about being in the sun ALL THE TIME, I think this may be un realistic as there is always going to be shady places if not because of other buildings but because you might be behind a hill etc. After research further I am starting to realise more and more that it is also about the lack of insulation our homes have. What if my building was somewhere where sick families (because of damp homes) or people with poorly insulated homes could go while their homes are getting re insulated etc. These buildings where people could go could be in the sunniest parts of Wellington like Owhiro bay etc.

Current positioning statement
I am designing dynamic buildings that adjust their positioning in relation to the sun to allow maximum sunlight. This aims to solve the housing crisis in Wellington by creating a housing/dwelling typology that allows for warmer and brighter housing that results in healthier individuals/families both mentally and physically.

I have based this design off the idea that taller buildings themselves are creating a lot of the shade within the city centre. What if buildings rise up and down in relation the sun allowing buildings behind to get sun etc.

Sun Map of Wellington

Sun map of wellington, the shaded areas are mostly in the city centre in between the buildings, this suggests to me that it is the buildings that are creating the shaded areas.

Exploration of New Space
I have taken into consideration the feedback and have decided to explore pod shapes that can be moveable and join to different pods etc. I was also reminded that I do not necessarily have to have a “conventional” classroom space and that it took away from my idea of collaborative learning, so i decided to explore incorporating this “conventional” classroom spaces into my pods.
I wanted to explore different shapes of pods that join and move so they can create new spaces. My immediate thought was hexagons. Hexagons are easily joined into larger groups. However to make larger open spaces the walls of the hexagons need to be moveable still so the idea of 180 degree hinges on each corner came to mind so they can move into straight lines or back into hexagons.
