Badalian’s photographs are truly art. The meaning and uniqueness that each photo entails really strikes me. I would love to see the setup of each photo and how he finishes them. I really love his photos since you can tell he puts a lot of effort into each and every one of them.

Pierre Choiniere
Choiniere is from Montreal, Canada. He has an incredible ability to create a seductive chemistry with his models. He uses defined lines and simple contrasts of color. He likes to keep the focus on his models as he magically enhances their beauty.
I really like Choiniere’s photos. I enjoy the simplicity of each image and how the model is the subject of the image, The women are beautiful. but the photos are kind of boring since they lack color.

Guy Bourdin
Bourdin was born in Paris, France. During his military service as a cadet in the French Air Force he learned photography. After the military he studied under the French artist Man Ray. He is known for his quirky compositions. He was one of the first photographers to create a complex narrative that was sensual, provocative, shocking and sometimes eerie.
I absolutely love Bourdin’s use of color. Most of his images really pop and are very appealing to the eye. His photos seem like they should be in a magazine because of the color and use of people’s bodies. I love looking at his pictures since they are so unique and pop culture-ish.

Gerald Larocque
Larocque lives in Toronto Canada and graduated from Ryerson University with a BFA in fine arts, with a concentration in photography. He focuses on addressing the unconscious and repressed memories through a compilation of conceptual surrealistic images. He is inspired by painting so he takes pictures with painting concepts in mind. He combines many artists techniques together to create his own style.
I find Larocque’s photos a little eerie and strange. He really takes advantage of the frame and places his subjects to create the biggest impact. His photos are mysterious and seem to tell a story. They seem like paintings and not photographs, which is what I like about them, since they are so different.

Laura Makabresku
Makabresku was born in Poland in 1987. She works as a visual artist and photographer in Krakow currently. Her biggest influence is fairy-tales and mysticism. These influences help her create a dream like atmosphere within each image and each one holds balance between light and dark, good and evil. All of her subjects hold the same equal status.
I really like her photographs because they are right out of a fairy-tale. They make life seem magical and dream-like. They also seem eerie and dreary. I like how in these two pictures, the faces of her subjects are not in the frame. These pictures have a certain tone and mysterious mood to them.

Herbert List
List was born in Hamberg in 1903. He was a German photographer who worked for magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Life. His main famous photographs are black and white compositions of male nudes. He is also known for his erotic street photography. He liked still life imagery and created dream like images using mirrors and double exposure.
I really like List’s photos. He pictures are very appealing and interesting. I like the idea of males together because they seem very vulnerable in these pictures, which is something you do not see a lot of. I want to know the story behind these pictures since it is probably very interesting. I would also like to know the set up of these pictures, since they are different and unusual.

Martin Parr
Since a young age, Parr knew he wanted to be a documentary photographer and he grew up to be one. He is well known for his work that captures real and intimate, satirical and anthropological aspects of everyday modern life. He is very interested in documenting wealth and social class. He likes to use a close-up micro lens and uses very saturated colors as a result of film type and ring flash. He works as a British documentary photographer as well as a photojournalist.
I really like Parr’s work. I typically like that include people because everyone is so unique and different and that is what Parr includes in his photos. His pictures have a lot of detail in them. It seems everywhere you look, you can find something new that you did not see before. His pictures include a lot of color and the mood seems happy and relaxed.

Edward Steichen
Steichen was an American photographer and painter. His career in the arts began with his four-year lithography apprenticeship with the American Fine Art Company of Milwaukee. He and his artist friends put their money together and rented a room for themselves for artistic endeavors and called themselves the Milwaukee Art Students League. He was one of the first people in the US to use the Autochrome Lumiere process.
His photographs are very dated and remind me of historic pictures. They are very well done and capture different meanings, I think. Some look as though they have special effects on them, but it is simply Steichen’s skill and printing methods. It seems as though some pictures are very well planned, while others are spontaneous.

Nan Goldin
Goldin grew up in the suburbs of Boston. She started taking photos at age fifteen and a few years later she held her first solo show that was based on the gay and transsexual community around her city. At that time she mostly worked with Cibachrome prints. Later on she moved to New York and documented the post-punk new wave music scene. A lot of her pictures involve drug use and violent couples.
I think Goldin’s photographs are very interesting. They display very real problems that everyday people face like drugs, alcohol, and different types of violence. These photos are not staged and show the harsh realities all around us. These pictures seem somewhat dirty and grungy. I know there is a story behind each photo, which is why I enjoy looking at these pictures.

Gjon Mili
Mili was born in Romania, but moved to America in 1923 where he landed his first job as a freelance photographer for life magazine. This job led him all over the world. He was a pioneer in the use of stroboscopic instruments to capture a sequence of actions in one photograph. He went to school for engineering and taught himself photography.
Mili’s photographs are quite unique. They capture motion like I have never seen a photograph capture motion before. His pictures are kind of “trippy”. I would really love to see how he captures these images in such a unique way. I really appreciate the idea of these pictures. They do not even look like pictures, more like negatives.

Cindy Sherman
Sherman is an American photographer and film director. She is very well known for her conceptual portraits. In the studio she plays all the roles; author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe and model. In 1995 she was the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship.
Most of Sherman’s work is not my taste. It is a bit too different for me. I do not really understand her pictures. They are not very appealing and are a little odd. She places her subjects in a different and somewhat unappealing manner. They kind of confuse me.

Ansel Adams
Adams was an American photographer and an environmentalist. He was very famous for his black and white landscape photos of the American West. These can be seen all over calendars, posters, books and on the internet. He is also well known for his photos of Yosemite National Park. Along with Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System. This was a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print.
I think Adams’s photos are beautiful. His work is really extraordinary and breathtaking. They almost look like paintings. The pictures seem too perfect to be real and I would love to see these places in real life so I can compare them to his pictures.

Penn was an American photographer known for his fashion photography portraits. and his still lifes. He worked for Vogue and also did some independent advertising work. His work is known internationally.
I find Penn’s work intriguing and simply beautiful. His pictures leave the viewer wondering more about the subject. I have a hard time taking my eyes off of most of his work since a lot of his subjects are extremely beautiful and have a unique look to them.

Diane Arbus
Arbus was an American photographer known for photographs of marginalized people such as dwarfs, giants, transgender people and nudists. Her work has been described as formal manipulation characterized by blatant sensationalism. A year after she committed suicide she became the first American photographer to have photographs displayed at the Venice Biennale.
I find her pictures strange and a little unsettling. I recognize that she is being different and representing the minorities in society, which I really appreciate since they are not payed a lot, if any, attention to. Her style is very unique and I like it a lot.

Russell and Laura Hogg
This husband and wife are a photography duo. They are from Aberdeen, Scotland and have been working as professional photographers for years. Their photographs depict breathtaking natural scenes, commercial work and traditional Scottish weddings.
These pictures are very clean and clear. They are also bright and one can obviously tell they are taken in Scotland by looking at the scenery and the patterns and colors. My great-grandfather came to America from Scotland, so I really enjoy anything that has to do with Scotland since that is my family’s history.

Dorothea Lange
Lange was a documentary photographer and is very well known for her work in the depression era. She documented the lives of people in the 1930′s while she worked for the Farm Security Administration. Her photo entitled “Migrant Mother” is incredibly famous and depicts a mother with 2 children living in a tent. The mother had told Lange that her and her family had been living off of frozen vegetables and birds they had killed themselves. Lange had a talent for capturing the essence of the Great Depression in photos.
I remember seeing the “Migrant Mother” image when I was younger in school. It really stayed with me because I remember seeing how sad that woman looked. I think Lange has a great talent of being able to sum up feelings and history in single images.
