jenniferburke:
As Olin was ushered away, Jennifer sniffled and wiped away the remaining tears. Only now, they were no longer forced. This felt like the first day of the beginning of her life – which might’ve been the craziest statement made in recent months considering she was pregnant with Vivian Travers’ twin babies. If this was the very last time she ever saw this prick breathing, she could very well live a fulfilled life. It was within reach. Oh, but she only wished she could be the one to slam the bars closed on him.
“So long.”
.
If looks could kill, the one Olin gave his sister, as he walked with the aurors head held high, would have shot her to the ground. But eventually, as they kept him in a dark interrogation room and built a case off of nothing, the fight drained away. This had happened before, and it was happening again. Soon he would be marched to Azkaban as he awaited trial. Once there, even more of him would be sucked away. He would become a shell as they decided he had tried to kill his sister, that he had almost killed a student in the process. By the time he was given his sentence, he had already accepted it. One day, when he was much older, he would be free from those walls. Maybe he’d still have it in him for revenge. To even try and live a life. But until then, Olin Burke was gone.

“Mr. Burke – Olin,” the tall, demanding Auror addressed him directly, as he worked to pry the crying girl from his frame. “We are bringing you in to discuss this matter further.” He turned to his partner, “Grab Mrs. Travers a glass of water.” Jennifer felt no need to defend herself and she felt her theatrics were being bought seamlessly.
.
Olin took a steadying breath, bringing his gaze to the Auror as he smoothed a hand down the front of his shirt. Olin never felt an urge to kill. He did what was needed of him, but unlike some of his comrades, he wasn’t blood thirsty. But in that moment, the desire to pull out his wand and strike down the three standing in front of him was overwhelming. Or worse, even, as his ears continued to register Jen’s tears. If he were to end up in Azkaban once again, he would get through it thinking of what he would do to her, once he got free. On the outside, however, he was stone cold. “Very well.”

“Right here will do.” The taller Auror demanded with a perked brow. When Jennifer opened her mouth to protest, he spoke before she had the chance to, “And this is not a negotiation. We are not here for you Burkes to stall long enough to make up “reasonable” excuses.” He held up a finger towards Jennifer, disrespecting her in every sense of the word. He was impatient, hell bent on finishing this interaction as quickly as it’d begun. “We are going to tell you what we found and you are going to listen.” The Auror did not wait for either of the Burkes to reply or consent before continuing on. “A cursed brooch, on file in the store you work tedious hours, was found on Hogwarts grounds soon after you began attending here. What your record has taught us, is that you’re thoughtless. Perhaps you addressed it incorrectly, never intending true harm. At least not yet. What were you going to do with it, Olin?”
Jennifer’s heart sank further and further, as the Auror drowned on. He spoke nonsense, because their solid proof was not as solid as Jennifer had originally intended. Be damned if she fucking failed this time. Never again. She cleared her throat, squeaking an answer in response, “He was trying to kill me!” Rehearsed tears were forced, falling freely down her pale cheeks. “He figured out I was the reason he went to Azkaban. I tattled.” Half lie, half truth. Enough to widen a few sets of eyes. “You can check his case file. You’ll see it was me,” she sobbed, gripping the tall Auror by his robes and falling into him. “You’ve got to keep me safe, please, please, please.”
.
At first, Olin began to laugh. They had nothing, just a weak theory. They were all bark, and no bite. Olin was far from thoughtless. He was meticulous with everything he did, every crime he committed, every piece of work he did for the shop. But that laugh quickly turned into a snarl at Jen’s outburst and the following performance. She only confirmed everything he already knew.
“You fucking bitch,” He hissed. “She’s lying. She lied to get me in there once, and she’s doing it again. I had nothing to do with that ridiculous brooch. You can ask me whatever you need.” If he had, he wouldn’t have been stupid enough to let some blood traitor get their hands on it. He was more than happy to stoop to his sisters level if it meant he’d get out of this. And if he did? Well, she’d possibly made the biggest mistake of her life. He’d settled on simply being an uncomfortable presence in her life, but now he was hellbent on ruining it, on taking everything from her just like she had done him -- like she was trying to do again.

Did Olin want Jen there? Absolutely not. “Perhaps somewhere more private?”
olinburke:
.
“We have. He was the one who gave us your name.” The anger that boiled through Olin in that moment was unparalleled. The loyalty he showed their father obviously meant nothing. He was ready to pull out his wand and kill the two wixen in front of them without a second thought. But he knew that wasn’t the right move. He could still sweet talk his way out of this, he was sure. “Very well. If it’ll help with the investigation, I’m more than happy to talk to you.” He paid no mind to Jennifer’s protests. He didn’t trust his sister in the slightest.
“I’d be much obliged to share information, as well. Ask away.” Jennifer’s eyes darted between everyone, a giddy feeling tickling the way up her throat. Or perhaps it was bile.

“Bullshit is right,” Jennifer stepped up to defend her brother, though a smirk threatened to spill onto her face at any given moment. All women were fucking actresses. Jennifer should’ve been being paid for her talented work. “Have you spoken with our father? How do you know that old bastard’s had nothing to do with this at all?” Throwing father under the bus perhaps wouldn’t be her smartest move – but if she defended Olin at every corner, her ass should have been properly covered.

Could this finally fucking be? Had the forged document fallen into the correct hands, after all this time? Jen was getting ahead of herself as she looked onward, her heart thumping at a record breaking speed.
.
“We believe you were involved in an incident earlier this year. A cursed object that put another student into a coma. We’d like you to come with us, so we can ask you some questions.” Olin felt his blood turn cold. It wasn’t often that he felt things any more, not since his time in Azkaban. But the thought of going back there had him terrified. “That’s a load of bullshit,” he replied, not letting that fear show. Sure, he probably deserved to be in there, but he kept things clean and organised for a reason. He didn’t get caught. Whatever this was, it wasn’t him. He glanced to Jen, wondering if she had something to do with this. She had last time, after all.

“What do you bobbies want?” Jennifer rightfully assumed, brow arching high.
.
It was impossible not to recognise the two wixen as Aurors. Even looking past the badges they wore, they had an air of self-righteousness about them that made it obvious. He wore the same expression as his sister. He knew he hadn’t done anything wrong. Or more, he knew how to clean up after himself. He always had. So he felt nothing as he answered, “That’s me.”

“Seventeen and some odd years,” she snorted bitterly, as she stared only at the cigarette.
.
Olin’s lips turned up into a cruel smile, an equally cruel yet disguised comment ready to leave his mouth when he heard his name, in full, being called from behind.

The world uncle caused a shiver to go down Jennifer’s spine. Olin was everything Jennifer was now working to escape for the best, for her children. “Horrible,” she chimed in. “All I want is a fucking cigarette.” And a bump, and a hit, anything.
.
Olin chose that moment to take another drag of his cigarette, but this time he blew the smoke away from her. “How long you got left?”

“I’m pregnant, asshole.” Though her family didn’t know of the rollercoaster – Jennifer lying about being pregnant, and then ironically, falling pregnant – it didn’t matter. They all should have believed she was with child, truth or not. She turned on her heels to look at him.
.
Olin’s lips curled up. “Ah, of course you are.” He tapped the ash from his cigarette to the ground. “And how is that? Never thought I’d be an Uncle so soon.” Not that he cared.

Jennifer’s feet came to a halt, her arms coming to cross over her chest as she stared onward towards the castle, quite dead-eyed. She learned long ago it was best to keep her hand of cards hidden from her brother. Still, the occasional emotion slipped up. Mostly, anger.
She inhaled deeply, savoring the sweet smell of the tobacco. How she craved it so much her mouth watered. “That a new brand?”
.
“Yes.” Olin took a deep drag, not bothering to blow the smoke away. “Want one?”

When: 30th April 1980 Where: Hogwarts Who: @jenniferburke
Olin was outside the main entrance to Hogwarts, cigarette hanging from his lips, when he spotted his sister walk past. For the most part, he ignored it. It was enough knowing merely his presence there, the glimpses she saw of him, the thought of when she might see him next, gave her discomfort. Occasionally, though, he liked to remind her. After everything she did to him, she deserved that. “Jennifer,” he called, starting after her.

Severus wasn’t sure if the other boy was taunting him, but he didn’t want to take the bait. He shook his head. “Whatever, Burke.”
.
With that, Olin turned on his heel and headed back to the dungeons. He’d have to keep an eye on Severus Snape, that was certain.

Severus immediately returned to averting his gaze and stubbed out his cigarette. “Like I’d stare at you.”
“Sure.” Olin finished off his cigarette and dropped the butt onto the ground. “Anything else?”

Sev raised an eyebrow at Olin and flicked some of the ash off his stub of a cigarette, waiting to see if the other boy would speak. Perhaps this was more difficult than he thought.
.
“What?”

Severus brought his cigarette to his lips, but he couldn’t suppress his grin. “It’s a bad habit, just like this one I suppose,” he said, raising the cigarette before taking a drag. “You’ve got it all planned out though, so there’s no impending doom for you in that respect.”
.
“Exactly.”
