#RoryMcIlroy acclaims ‘buoyant’ #RyderCup team after fightback Rory McIlroy insisted the #Europeanteam mood is “buoyant” after an afternoon Ryder Cup recovery took #DarrenClarke’s men from a morning deficit of 4-0 to 5-3 by close of play on day one at Hazeltine. McIlroy, who celebrated in emphatic style after converting an eagle putt on the 16th green to seal a third point for Europe, admitted to being inspired in part by a “hostile” home crowd. A clean sweep of the morning foursomes meant Europe needed something special in the second session and they duly delivered it. McIlroy and Thomas Pieters defeated Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, Sergio García and Rafa Cabrera Bello saw off JB Holmes and Ryan Moore after Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson had atoned for an earlier defeat by Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. It was McIlroy who seemed to capture reinvigorated European sentiment.

#AhmedMusa: I want to give something to people back home in #Nigeria Ahmed Musa has been smiling at a couple of old photos showing the friends he grew up playing street football with back in Nigeria, together with a newspaper article flagging up his potential when he was a child. The third picture handed to him is much more recent, however, and, rather curiously, shows #LeicesterCity’s £16m summer signing wearing a Manchester United shirt with “Herrera” on the back. Musa looks at the image and breaks into laughter. “I have a five-a-side pitch at my house in Nigeria, so I always train there, and I didn’t have anything to wear to train, so I decided to wear that Man United shirt, which I got after the Champions League game against United when I was at #CSKAMoscow,” he says.

#QPR’s #JimmyFloydHasselbaink admits he was ‘naive’ but would not take bribe Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has denied requesting a fee of £55,000 to work for a fake east Asian firm seeking to sell players to Queens Park Rangers, but admitted he was “naive”. The Daily Telegraph this week began publishing information obtained during a 10-month investigation which it claims “separately unearthed widespread evidence of bribery and corruption in British football”. Secretly filmed footage of Sam Allardyce appearing to make a variety of controversial comments cost him the England job after just 67 days, while Hasselbaink, QPR manager since December last year, is among other figures to have been filmed by undercover reporters as part of the investigation. The Telegraph alleges the Dutchman requested a fee of £55,000 to work for a fake east Asian firm seeking to sell players to the club, although the former striker immediately denied any wrongdoing.

#BradleyWiggins opens up with full story on asthma, allergies and TUEs Sir Bradley Wiggins has for the first time given details of the history of asthma and pollen allergies that led him to apply for three therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) to have injections of the banned corticosteroid triamcinolone. The use of the drug did not break any anti-doping rules, although they occurred immediately before major target races, but the 2012 Tour de France winner and nine-times #Olympic medallist said he realised why the injections might be considered unethical. In an exclusive and wide-ranging interview with the Guardian, Wiggins explains what he says is the complete chronology of his symptoms and treatment for those ailments, detailing why the injections were required before certain races but not others.

#TysonFury ‘tests positive’ for cocaine but unlikely to be banned The world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who last week pulled out of his proposed rematch with #WladimirKlitschko citing mental health issues, has reportedly tested positive for cocaine. Fury, who holds the #WBA and #WBO world titles, was said to have been informed on Thursday night that his A sample from a random urine test on 22 September had tested positive for the substance benzoylecgonine, the central compound found in cocaine. Fury pulled out of the rematch a day after the test. The news was broken by ESPN, which quoted a letter from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (Vada) president, Dr Margaret Goodman, to representatives for Fury, Klitschko, the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions. In it Goodman wrote: “This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association program has been analysed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse. The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine.”

#ChrisPowell 'not contemplating' permanently taking over from #NigelPearson at Derby Derby County assistant manager Chris Powell insists he is not contemplating the prospect of taking over from Nigel Pearson on a permanent basis as he prepares for Saturday’s game against Reading. Pearson has been suspended, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing, following a major falling out with the club's owner and chairman Mel Morris. According to Sky sources, Pearson looks set to part company with Derby and Powell took charge of the Rams for their 2-0 Sky Bet Championship win at Cardiff City on Tuesday evening. Powell admits the situation is far from ideal given his close relationship with Pearson but says he is focused on preparing the team for their trip to Deepdale this weekend. "He is someone who is a friend and a mentor but of course now football is football and we have to move on," Powell said. "That is exactly what I and everyone else has to do. "It is a strange situation but it is a situation I will meet head on. We understand things change and develop in football and there is a due process going on. "Nigel is suspended so all I can think about is the squad of players and caring for them. I am not even thinking about my own situation. It is about them, about the team and it is about Saturday." When asked if he would be interested in taking over from Pearson, Powell said: "It's something I wouldn't even contemplate thinking about." "We will see where things lead but the main thing is making sure the club is moving forward in a positive way."

#Southampton boss #ClaudePuel stands by changes after draw in #Israel Southampton manager Claude Puel insisted he had made the right decision to rest four key players for the clash with Hapoel Be'er Sheva. He also praised his team for earning what appeared a valuable point following a goalless draw and explained his decision to substitute youngster Jake Hesketh in the 35th minute was because of his concern about the game's physicality and not the player's performance. The combination of the 0-0 stalemate and a 3-1 victory for Sparta Prague over Inter Milan leaves Southampton at the top of Group K and, like second-placed Hapoel, with a total of four points from two games. They next visit Inter before hosting them back at St Mary's, but despite Southampton appearing to miss the rested Charlie Austin's physical presence and the result ending a run of four successive victories, Puel said: "It was important to take some players to keep fresh for a game in two days (in the Premier League against Leicester). "Israel is very hard, it's a long journey, a difficult opponent. All my players have done (well) because it's not easy and it's not a surprise to see (Hapoel) at this level. "It was a difficult game and I am happy to take this point. We played a good team, a physical team, a good team tactically. "It's a good experience for the future. When we win away at West Ham (last Sunday) and you take one point with the difficulties here with all this travel, the journey, and we go to play now in two days against Leicester. "It's very hard and difficult but my team learned. They gave a good answer in difficult conditions." Hapoel's movement and athleticism gave them the greater attacking threat, explaining how they succeeded in unexpectedly winning 2-0 at Inter two weeks ago and allowing them to dominate possession with Southampton's Ryan Bertrand, Steven Davis and captain Jose Fonte also rested. The promising Hesketh had recently impressed with his performance and by scoring his first senior goal in the recent EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, but after replacing him with Dusan Tadic in the first half, Puel insisted he was trying to protect the 20-year-old. "I prefer to change because it was difficult that we didn't have the ball," he said. "It was physical and I prefer to protect him and it was for me a tactical problem. "I have confidence with Jake. When I put him in to start: it's a young player for the future but it's important also to protect him and all the players. "It was difficult but we will see Jake in other games and other moments and it's not a problem."

#Hapoel Be'er Sheva 0-0 #Southampton: Claude Puel's side held in Israel Southampton earned a goalless draw against Hapoel Be'er Sheva in Israel in their Europa League Group K clash on Thursday. In a game of few chances, Virgil van Dijk squandered Southampton's clearest opening when he headed wide from James Ward-Prowse's free-kick after four minutes. Maor Melikson went close for the hosts in the second half, but both teams seemed happy to play for a point in the closing stages. The draw sees Be'er Sheva and Southampton move onto four points each after two matches, with the Saints travelling to Inter Milan next in the competition on October 20. Claude Puel, who left Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand at home ahead of Sunday's clash with Leicester, made seven changes from the 3-0 win over West Ham, including a European debut for youngster Jake Hesketh. The Frenchman's side were largely second best in the first half, but should have gone in front after just four minutes when Van Dijk miscued his header from Ward-Prowse's dangerous delivery. Anthony Nwakaeme's firm strike from distance was as good as it got for Be'er Sheva, who dominated possession without threatening Fraser Forster. But Puel, clearly unhappy with a lethargic first-half display, replaced Hesketh with Dusan Tadic 11 minutes before the break. The Serbia international made a difference, and linked up well with Cuco Martina down Southampton's right, but too often a poor final ball let the visitors down. Ward-Prowse forced David Goresh into a smart stop with Southampton's first shot on target on 51 minutes, while substitute Ben Sahar was inches away from turning home Melikson's cross-shot for Be'er-Sheva. The Israeli champions struggled to break down their Premier League opponents for much of the evening, but the lively Nwakaeme did waste a promising opportunity when he dragged wide after Maya Yoshida's poor clearance. The stalemate means Southampton, who face Leicester at the King Power on Sunday, stay top of Group K on four points thanks to their superior goal difference over Be'er Sheva. Inter Milan's 3-1 defeat in Prague leaves the Serie A giants bottom of the group, with Sparta Prague third on three points.

Jurgen #Klopp insists #Liverpool must improve despite their strong start to the season Jurgen Klopp has played down Liverpool's strong start to the season - claiming it is too early in the campaign to be "satisfied with anything". Liverpool are currently fourth in the Premier League table having already recorded notable wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and defending champions Leicester. The Reds have impressed in front of goal, scoring 16 goal in their opening six league games, but Klopp insists there is still room for improvement. "It's obvious we have to improve," said Klopp, at a press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to Swansea, live on Sky Sports 2. "We can analyse a lot of things we can do better. We have got results but we cannot stop thinking, and there is a lot of things to do for us. "That's the attitude we have created together. It's much too early in the season to be satisfied with anything. We have to be ready for the next opponents." Liverpool head to Wales this weekend full of confidence after thrashing newly-promoted Hull City 5-1 last Saturday. Swansea, meanwhile, have not won in the league since the opening day and are looking to recover from back-to-back cup and league defeats to Manchester City. Francesco Guidolin's side are just one point clear of the relegation places but Klopp believes the Swans have played better than their league position suggests. "They have played much better than four points. They have a clear plan and different options," he said. "They have good defending. It's a typical Premier League problem; you analyse and think 'okay they are quite strong, unlucky here and there'. "We will be prepared and nobody should be in doubt that we know about their quality." Liverpool are set to be without striker Divock Origi for the trip to the Liberty Stadium after the Belgium international picked up a knock in training this week. "It's a normal training week, with a couple of things here and there," Klopp said. "Maybe Divock. He got a little knock on his foot where we had to do a little assessment. "It's nothing major but it might be too short a period before the game." Meanwhile, Mamadou Sakho is also expected to be left out the matchday squad as he continues to work back to full fitness. The France international defender has not featured for the Reds this season after being sent home from the club's pre-season tour of the United States. However, he played a full 90 minutes for Liverpool's U23 side on Wednesday and Klopp says he has since spoke to the defender about his Anfield future. "Those two things are not just a rule for Sakho, but for everyone; work hard and give your best," Klopp said. "I spoke to the team, and I spoke to Mama, then we spoke together, and that's it. From my side everything is done and we can carry on."

#Dundalk 1-0 #Maccabi Tel Aviv: Irish side claim famous Europa League win Dundalk made history in the Europa League after forward Ciaran Kilduff came off the bench to seal three points in a 1-0 win against Maccabi Tel Aviv. It was a case of cometh the hour, cometh the man, as the hero in the last-gasp draw against AZ Alkmaar doubled his tally in the competition to claim victory. Switching from their home in County Louth to Dublin's Tallaght Stadium, the Lilywhites faithful had to wait for 72 minutes for the breakthrough. Forward Patrick McEleney collected the ball inside the Maccabi half and played it to the lively Daryl Horgan on the left of the penalty area from where the winger clipped in a cross for birthday boy Kilduff, 28 today, to score. It was no less than the Lilywhites deserved after dominating long periods of game by sticking to their creative and assured passing game. The visitors had a number of chances but did not offer enough going forward and never truly imposed themselves on the game. The Lilywhites felt they were denied a penalty after 20 minutes. Robbie Benson picked up a loose ball on the right of the penalty area and appeared to be scythed down by a challenge from Maccabi defender Omri Ben Harush as he chased through on goal. Dundalk's skill and creativity was again on show as the first half drew to a close and a breakaway split the Maccabi defence. Right-back Sean Gannon received the ball in his own half and picked out McMillan on the halfway line and he turned his man to leave the Israelis exposed. The striker fed Horgan as be broke from midfield and drove to the box before switching the ball to the onrushing McEleney but he failed to break the deadlock. One of the best chances of the night fell to Maccabi midway through the second half. After a misjudgement by Benson in front of his defence, Maccabi's Vidar Om Kjartansson curled a fierce left-foot drive over the crossbar from inside the box. From there the game opened up with Dundalk pushing forward and capitalising with the introduction of Kilduff, who is fast becoming their Europa talisman.

#Southampton assistant #EricBlack accused in Daily Telegraph sting Southampton assistant manager Eric Black is the latest person to feature in the Daily Telegraph's ongoing football investigations, after being accused of offering advice on bribing club officials. The club revealed on Thursday evening that Claude Puel's number two will feature in Friday's article in the sting which has rocked English football. In the video, Black is seen speaking with undercover reporters posing as representatives of a Far East firm and the Telegraph allege he advises the 'businessmen' how to bribe lower league staff to identify players for their fictitious agency. Black attended the meeting at the Lime Wood Hotel in Hampshire on September 2 along with football agent Scott McGarvey, who thought he would be working to identify promising young players for the Far East firm to sign. Earlier this week, Sam Allardyce lost his job as England boss after being filmed advising people purporting to be businessmen how to circumvent the FA's rules on third-party ownership. The Saints say they have contacted the Football Association and the Premier League and "intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear". The statement said: "Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their on-going investigation, the club's Assistant First Team Manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow's paper. "The club immediately requested to be sent, by The Daily Telegraph, the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information. "We have today contacted The FA and The Premier League, and intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear "Southampton Football Club is fully committed to investigating any situation that directly or indirectly relates to our club, employees or the wider community." A spokesman for Mr Black told the Telegraph: "[Mr Black] does not recall Mr McGarvey making suggestions that football officials should be paid during transfer negotiations - this was not the purpose of the meeting so far as our client understood it. "Any suggestion that he was complicit in such discussions is false." The reference to paying "a couple of grand" related to a freelance scout he suggested the Far East company should approach, the spokesman said. Black, who served as Aston Villa caretaker manager after the departure of Remi Garde, was appointed to Southampton's coaching staff during the summer as assistant to Puel.

Wayne #Rooney to remain #England captain under Gareth Southgate Wayne Rooney is set to remain as England captain under caretaker manager Gareth Southgate. Southgate, who has taken charge of the national side following the departure of Sam Allardyce, has confirmed that he intends to name Rooney as captain for the upcoming games against Malta and Slovenia. Rooney skippered England to a 1-0 win over Slovakia earlier this month and Southgate has chosen to retain the Manchester United striker as captain following discussions with the 30-year-old. Southgate was placed in temporary charge of the Three Lions on Tuesday evening after Allardyce and the Football Association mutually agreed to terminate the former Sunderland manager's contract, following an undercover investigation by the Daily Telegraph. England U21 boss Southgate will now take charge of the senior side's next four matches, starting with a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Malta on October 8. Southgate then leads his team to face Slovenia three days later while the FA continues to search for a permanent replacement for Allardyce.

Jose #Mourinho hails Wayne #Rooney's impact against #Zorya Luhansk Jose Mourinho praised Wayne Rooney's contribution as he came off the bench to help Manchester United to victory against Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League. Having lost their Group A opener at Feyenoord a fortnight ago, the Portuguese highlighted the importance of securing victory against the relatively unknown Ukrainians at Old Trafford. Zlatan Ibrahimovic's close-range header secured a 1-0 win that kick starts their campaign ahead of October's home clash with Fenerbahce. Mourinho accepted United did not play "amazingly well" against Zorya but got the job done, saying he was impressed with Wayne Rooney impact after coming off the bench for a second successive match. "He was laughing and saying he made a great assist," the United boss said, regarding his strike into the ground led to Ibrahimovic's winner. "But, really, he gave me what the team needs at that time, which is a presence, a second presence in the box. "He is more a striker than Juan (Mata) and Juan went more to the right side. (Anthony) Martial brought, after the goal, freshness and speed, also to try to kill the game, which we didn't but he was a positive presence, too. "We started the game with a very good team and I had on the bench also players to give me solutions for everything. "We have proof to win matches in the Europa League that we need to be good, we need to play seriously because they are good teams." Mourinho called United's upcoming fixture schedule a "poisoned gift", making him all the more relieved to get a much-needed win against Zorya. United will be looking to rack up fourth straight win in all competitions when Stoke City arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday lunchtime. The game marks the start of a gruelling October schedule for United, who travel to Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League and before hosting Manchester City in the EFL Cup in a frantic 12-day period. "The poisoned gift is already there, so what can you do?" Mourinho added. "We just have to play Monday, and then Thursday, and then Stamford Bridge on the Sunday. "But before that we have Stoke, so let us concentrate on Stoke because it is another poisoned gift because Stoke is not what the table says. "The manager is very good, the players are good, the team is good, so when I look to the table, that's not Stoke's position. I play against a good Stoke and not the Stoke is in that position in the table."

How #KevinGarnett and #PaulPierce accidentally created the modern #NBA NBA training camps opened this week, and it’s difficult to remember the last time the league has changed this dramatically in a single offseason. Multiple teams have lost current or former franchise players through retirement, free agency and health issues. Three Hall of Famers are gone, while another has just announced that this season will be his last. The Cleveland Cavaliers are actually defending champions – and if that’s not a sign of a radical shift in the basketball cosmos then nothing is.

#JimmyAnderson set to miss #Bangladesh tour with persistent shoulder injury Jimmy Anderson is set to miss #England’s tour of Bangladesh due to the shoulder injury that dogged his summer, giving the team management a headache over his fitness before the Test series against India in November. Anderson, 34, has not played since the Test series with Pakistan in August in order to help him recover from the stress fracture to his right shoulder blade that was discovered earlier in the season and caused a selection row before the Lord’s Test with Pakistan. But it is understood that scans this week have shown that a longer break is now required in order to complete the healing process, with the two-Test series against Bangladesh that starts in Chittagong on 20 October expected to be too soon. Jake Ball, the Nottinghamshire seamer, will provide cover for Anderson after being asked to stay on after the one-day leg of the tour that begins on Thursday when England, who will be captained by Jos Buttler after Eoin Morgan pulled out for security reasons, depart for Dhaka.
