Samples
Here are some sample poster designs I produced for the Old York Road Unplugged festival. My initial idea for this project was to create a hand drawn flyer with various musical instruments in an abstract cubism style, as many posters/flyers for festivals or street parties I researched weren’t that appealing to me, as even though I liked the style of designs that were produced I found several of them to be quite repetitive and not that fascinating. For my design samples I plan on producing a unique style
Samples that weren’t successful were the one on the top row right and the fourth and fifth ones on the bottom left and middle. The reason why these ones were unsuccessful is because they’re badly drawn, messy and look uninteresting to my audience.
I do however, like my first and second sample designs because I like the way they have been laid out in an abstract cubist style.

Milton Glaser Artists Research
Milton Glaser was an American graphic designer born on June 26th 1929 in The Bronx, New York. Before attending the High School of Music & Art, Manhattan he had taken drawing classes with fellow artists Raphael and Moses Soyer. He was seen as the godfather of graphic design and during his career he worked with many different clients including New York Magazine, which he co founded with American magazine editor and journalist Clay Felker in 1968. He also co founded graphic design and illustration studio, Push Pin Studios alongside Seymour Chwast, Reynold Ruffins and Edward Sorel in 1954. Glasers works were mainly eccentric and contemporary designs of books, posters, logo types, record sleeves and font design with one of his most well known pieces being the I Heart New York (NY) logo. This work is important to my project because my use of handwritten bubble typed text is similar to the iconic I Heart NY Logo only difference is my text is more bulkier and thicker which makes it stand out more. I have looked at Glasers graphic design works because I got inspired to redesign my own lettering based on his American Typewriter font he had developed specifically for his iconic logo piece for the text on my flyer/poster.

Piet Mondrian Artists Research
Piet Mondrian was born on March 7th 1872 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He got introduced to art at an early age as his father was a drawing teacher while his uncle was pupil of Willem Maris at The Hague School of artists. He spent some of his time by painting and drawing at the river Gein. He studied at the Academy for Fine Art, Amsterdam in 1892 and began his career as a primary school teacher while still doing art. The beginning of Mondrian’s artistic career started out by painting realistic scenes, particularly trees. Eventually between the years 1914 and 1916 through his love of painting trees with lines, he then crossed over to the abstract movement, in particular Neo-Plasticism, where the lines he created where never painted with a ruler and stopped using curved lines in any of his paintings, instead making the lines straighter and in proportion. Many of his works were used by his own blending of specific paints, especially primary colours which were never used directly from a tube. My understanding of his works are, they are very vibrant, lively and purely lineal with certain areas of one or two primary colours spaciously applied around the canvas leaving more white gaps. I respect the fact he went from whimsical paintings of trees all the way to Neo Plasticism focusing on heavily straight lined paintings with minimal colours which to me look as though they have been printed as lots of the lines are very precise. This work is important to my project because the use of lines that Mondrian uses, I myself have incorporated the use of lines with the design of the piano keys onto my poster/flyer. I picked this artist for my project because his use of lines and bold strong colours are similar to previous pieces I have done before. I have used Mondrian's series of composition works all which were made from 1917-1942 as a guide on how I wanted my poster/flyer to appeal to my audience.

Audience
The audience for this project is people who live in the local area of Wandsworth which are a mixture of people, young professionals, children, older adults, people who own their own houses and are in work and a mix of genders and ethnic backgrounds. The flyer/poster would have information as it's main theme and also needs to appeal to a diverse group of people (see above). My design of a music themed abstract works well because it doesn't offend anybody. The colour scheme aims to contrast and reflect the nature of the event in that it is both bright but with relaxed themes also included. It represents fun while not offending anyone.
According to the Wandsworth 2011 Census the age structure generally in Wandsworth is 30-44 years old which make up 30.6% of the population. The second highest group of ages is 20-29 which makes up 23.1% of the population. Over 50% of the population in Wandsworth are between the ages of 20-44 years old, according the 2011 census. The ethnic population of Wandsworth is made up of 71.4% of white people and the remaining being a mix of multiple ethnic groups including Asians, Black Afro Caribbean and Black British which make up a further 22% of the population. 45% of the population either own or people that own or are buying a house. People in management jobs or professional jobs such as doctors, teachers, paramedics, business people, electricians, shop assistants, salespeople, students etc make up 51% of the population in Wandsworth.
Examples of questions I would ask my audience would be: Is this colour scheme in my poster offensive to anybody? Do the images in the poster reflect it is a music festival? Do the musical instruments shown in the poster reflect the diversity of the York Road area? Would children be attracted to the bright colours of the poster? Is there enough information on the poster to allow you to make plans to come to the event? Are you somebody that enjoys community events?

Kandinsky Artists Research
Wassily Kandinsky was born on December 16th (4th) 1886 in Moscow, Russia. Most of his childhood was spent in Odesa, Ukraine where he became fascinated with colour symbolism and psychology. Other than colours he also had an interest in music, playing the cello and piano. Whilst studying law and economics at the University Of Moscow, Kandinsky found his love of art and spiritualism. Upon graduating as professor of law, at the age of 30 he chose to follow the pathway of art rather than law. Most of his works in my opinion look like an explosion of a musical composition. Two of his iconic paintings, Composition 8 ad On White II both created in 1923, show a strong reference of mathematical and geometrical angles and structure. Many of his works are not necessarily bright in colour but very vibrant in intensity. Kandinsky's works seem to follow the same pattern of focusing directly in the middle of the canvas and seem to explore outwards. His works are important to my project because they have given me a template of abstract style art as guidance for ideas and inspiration. I have looked at Kandinsky's works for my research as he is at the forefront and regarded as the master of abstract art. Without Kandinsky there wouldn't be any abstract art in the way we see now. It's informed my work as the strong lines in his pieces have given me the idea for the piano in abstract form and strong lines on my poster.

Pablo Picasso Artists Research
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and theatre designer who was born on October 25th in Malaga, Spain. He worked specifically in the Cubism and Surrealism movement, with some of his notable works including La Vie, The Weeping Woman, Guernica and Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. His work was often categorised in different periods two examples being the blue and rose periods. Picasos work was very diverse as he'd divert from painting to printmaking and sculpture to ceramics. A few interesting mediums he used for his artworks would be mixing sand and other materials into his paints thus leading to having a more sensory feel and gives a more a three dimensional look to his paintings and ceramics. This work, even though I haven't used his style as such, is most important to me because it gave me understanding that it wasn't right for my project but, I am including Picasso as I have heavily researched on his works, life and gained lots of knowledge and respect for his artworks, ideas plus mixed media. This was relevant to my work because it diverted me to a whole different genre of art, from cubism I decided to experiment with abstract instead. Without my research on Pablo Picasso I wouldn't of found a new path for my project which suited better for my needs.
