Hey fishies! I'm Darla Sherman, but you probably know me better as Merspotting. Happy spotting!

“Yeah maybe, But it’ll be because I did it. Not because my body wanted to fail on me.” Percy stated shrugging. He could still grow out then get sick as fuck and then it was no big deal.
Darla shot Percy a quizzical look. “That’s kind of a fucked-up way of looking at life, but okay. Whatever gets you through it,” she said with a shrug. After all, she wasn’t one to judge. Too many people spent too much time doing that. “You know studies prove that looking at the ocean fifteen minutes a day adds years to your lifespan?”

Before his anger could take hold of him Percy laughed. Pulling out another he lit it and took a drag blowing out the smoke without caring where it went. “I wanted to be nice, having spent most my childhood in and out of hospitals but hey, if you wanna be a brat. Go for it.” He scoffed out.
“Oh, that sucks,” Darla said, wrinkling her nose. Now she felt kind of bad for lying and for being harsh. But she wasn’t going to admit that. “Y’know smoking is probably just gonna put you back in a hospital anyway, though?”

demigod--maui:
Maui was sitting cross-legged by the lake, some scrap fabric that he’d scavenged from some old shirts that Celia was throwing out, some wire and string and a few reeds that he’d waded into the lake to grab. It had been a while since he’d done this, but it was one of his favorite ways to unwind. And Maui definitely needed the unwinding.
At the sound of a voice, his head snapped up and his eyebrows jumped on his forehead at the girl smiling–a little manically–at him.
He was going to correct her and say “um, actually, it’s shapeshifter, Demigod of the wind and seas, hero to all” but, before he could, she said those four magic words: I need you help.
Since his last attempt to prove himself ended in epic failure, well, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to fix it. He set his kite down and bounced to his feet, alert at once.
“What’s wrong?”
Darla grinned wider. People around here were so judgmental, so self-involved, it was refreshing that, for once, someone was going to help her with no hesitation. “Holy Poseidon, aren’t you a change from most people here?” she said happily. “I need shape-shifter help. How do you do it? Turn into different things? Because I really need to turn myself into, like, a fish or a dolphin or something or--” her eyes widened. “A mermaid, if you know how to do that. Now that would be real cool.”

deb-the-damsel:
It was weird still, so so weird, to be out in the world with her magic and just like– not crazy. It was so weird to be just a magic girl hanging out in a park instead of the crazy girl locked in her house. Swynlake felt so big and yet Deb knew it was tiny compared to the world, knew there was so much out there she could do and so many people she could meet. People who wold call her magic and not crazy.
They both rushed forward to see the picture and Flo did a little delighted squeal while Deb bounced on her feet “look! Look at that! There we are! That’s both of us!” Photographic evidence. They’d never had that before. Flo was real. She was real. “Blog? Go for it!” Maybe her parents would see it- not likely, not at all, but maybe they’d see Deb and Flo standing next to her and then they would absolutely have to face the truth. They’d wasted nearly seventeen years of their daughters’ life with doctors and medications she never needed. “Oh! I’m Deb, and this is Flo.” Flo gave a little bow, then spun off to go do cartwheels. “This is- this is amazing! She’s on camera! I can’t believe this, it’s so cool!”
“Deb and Flo... That’s cute. Any particular reason for Flo?” Darla asked, beginning to type up some notes for a post. It was a relief the photo worked-- Darla knew that people got very skeptical when there was no photo proof, at least in the mermaid-spotting world. She could only imagine all of the judgment she would get if she posted something claiming to meet a magick who could duplicate herself, only to post a picture without the duplicate.
“I have a few more questions, too, actually, if you don’t mind. Any special powers-- besides cartwheels, nice ones, by the way. And how do people tell you apart? Is there anything different at all? Have you ever switched places?” she asked things as they popped in her head, with little regard to whether Deb had tried to answer them. After a moment she looked up. “Well?”

Taking note of her pitiful look, he fought the urge to raise a brow and question why she looked at him like that. It wasn’t like he was a cabin boy again who was bullied by the rest of the crew. Things were different now. He was different now.
But he kept the polite smile, trying to make his mother proud by doing so and sitting up straight as well. Like a proper gentleman, she’d say.
“Sorry,” He apologized, pulling on the sheepish act as he chuckled a little. “Yeah, I’m James. And yeah, I know. It’s a real pleasure to meet you. I didn’t expect you to be so… welcoming.” He looked around. “But this place is pretty fascinating…I’ve seen a few fairies flying around.”
Darla smiled, puffing up a little bit at what James said. “It’s so nice to meet you, James. I think you’re going to really like it here, as long as you hang around the right people.” She lowered her voice and looked around as though others might overhear some important gossip. “I have to warn you, not everybody here is as nice as me. A lot of people look down on mermaid-spotting and even try to stop people from doing it. They’re like the mermaid activists from online, but way worse, ‘cause they’re in real life and you can’t just block them when you get tired of them.”
She waved her hand. “But let’s not focus on negativity right now. There are some fairies around, yes. Some of them are really great. But really, you’ll run into all kinds of magicks here. It’s truly fascinating, you’re right. I met a girl the other day who could duplicate herself, just make copies of herself. And I’ve been trying to find out more about this shapeshifter. Of course, the real focus is the mermaids, but it’s cool to learn some other things.”

“Good luck with that.” He muttered sarcasm heavy in his voice. Though as she spoke the more his irritation grew. “If you really think I put it out because you asked…” he trailed off not even feeling it was worth it. She didn’t command him and he didn’t just do what people told him to do.
Darla smirked. “I can get whatever I want,” she said smugly. “See, I just made you think putting out the cigarette was your idea. But it was actually mine. It’s called subtlety.” Actually, subtlety was not really Darla’s specialty at all, but in the rare occasion when she got to claim it, she relished that.

Ship Shape | Darla + Maui
Darla was just about to pack up and leave the lake after another unfortunately unsuccessful day of mermaid-spotting when she noticed someone she hadn’t seen before at the lake. She had, however, seen him before online. At least, she thought so.
As Darla headed up the path back toward the road she noticed that, yes, indeed, the man putting together what looked like a kite was the same Instagram-famous magick who could turn into different things and probably had a ton of other cool powers. Now this could be interesting, Darla thought. Perhaps she could charm him (or beg and plead and whine, either worked) into telling her his secrets. Turning into a fish would be the perfect way to get some Atlantis Lake intel, even if you couldn’t use a camera with fins. Maybe he could even help her turn into a mermaid.
“Oi!” she shouted, walking up to the shapeshifter. “Maui, isn’t it? I know you! You’re the shapeshifter, the one who turns into different things. I need your help!”

“You are aware if it was that serious it wouldn’t be sudden? You would only face symptoms and could you know get help?” He stated looking at her from the corner of his eyes. Taking another long drag he blew the smoke upward before putting it out no matter how much his body wanted it. Glancing up his eyes followed her. “What are you looking for?”
“Mermaids,” Darla responded, as though that were the most obvious thing in the world. “Thank you for finally putting that out, for Poseidon’s sake. You know, you could have gotten the mermaids sick smoking that thing near the lake. At least you’re considerate enough to listen to people when they tell you to do something. There are too many goddamn stubborn people here.”

Percy could let out a small groan. He was craving the cigarette way too much and he didn’t want to put it out. “How about just not blowing smoke your way?” It was a weak attempt and he knew it.

“Well, when I have an asthma attack and die, you’re gonna be the one who gets sued,” Darla grumbled, sticking her chin in her hand and looking out at the lake. For a moment, she thought she saw something move in the water and shot up out of her seat, but then saw that it was only the wind blowing a leaf across the lake. “Dammit.”

“Yup to you whether or not to believe it. I’m not lying but if you don’t really know me then its up to you.”He couldn’t make her believe him and he didn’t feel like he wanted to push it. He already felt irritated and assumed it was Panic’s feeling creeping up.
Darla shrugged. “Alright, that’s fair,” she said, still not entirely sure she believed Percy, but satisfied with the assurance that she didn’t actually have to. “Hey, are you gonna put out that thing yet? I’ve got asthma, you know.” That was a lie, but one she frequently used around smokers.

deb-the-damsel:
Fifty. That sounded like… A lot. Deb wasn’t even sure she’d ever seen that many people in one place. And sometimes it was difficult having just one more version of herself, fifty just sounded totally unmanageable. “That sounds kind of exhausting, honestly.” Considering how strange it still made her bran feel to deliberately just produce the one Flo, Deb was pretty sure it’d be a while before she hit fifty, if she ever did think of a reason for having that many. “But yeah, I’m looking, I’ve never met anyone else who does… Uh, copies?” Flo shook her head “not copies, whatever. I’ve never met anyone else who does this yet.”
Camera? “Uh, I don’t know. I tried to take a picture with her once when we were young and she didn’t show up then, but that was way before I could make other people see her.” Deb shrugged “you can give it a try though, she like touches things and stuff so it seems likely she’d show up.”
Flo mirrored the pose Deb took up, a big grin and a peace sign.
Darla squinted at the screen, having a hard time seeing anything on it in the bright sunlight, but took the picture anyway. Maybe she could start a side project to her blog just of all of the weird magic she encountered in Swynlake. If she wasn’t as passionate about that as she was about mermaids, at least she would have much more material.
She turned the phone around and showed the picture to Deb and Flo. “Can you see anyone in it? Or should I retake it? Oh, and you don’t mind if I post it on my blog, right?” Darla didn’t see any reason why they would say no, but figured it was good courtesy. Maybe this would get her two new followers. “Oh, and what are your names? Do you have the same name?”

Reported Sightings
In August 2009, after dozens of people reported seeing a mermaid leaping out of the water and doing aerial tricks, the Israeli coastal town of Kiryat Yam offered a $1 million award for proof of its existence. In February 2012, work on two reservoirs near Gokwe and Mutare in Zimbabwe stopped when workers refused to continue, stating that mermaids had hounded them away from the sites. It was reported by Samuel Sipepa Nkomo, the water resources minister.

“Kay, well let me make this easy. The whole Swynlake magic was at work last week. People were able to forget and obviously, you choose to. Which isn’t a bad thing. However if you met me there just let it go.” He explained gently his voice a touch lower and slower as Percy then Panic especially when he didn’t feel like mimicking it.
Darla listened, not entirely believing him but also aware that Swynlake was the kind of place where very strange things were considered to be just another day. “Huh,” she said, pausing for a moment to think about it. “And how do I know you’re not just fucking with me?”
