The Tom Riddle Chronicles: Going to Hogwarts
When Tom was eleven, Albus Dumbledore, a professor at Hogwarts School, came to visit him at the orphanage. Tom was not surprised upon being informed by Dumbledore that he was a wizard – he was, in fact, eager to believe that he had special gifts that no one else had. Dumbledore was alarmed at Tom’s abuse of his wizarding powers, and warned Tom that at Hogwarts law-breakers were not tolerated, after which Tom’s demeanour changed as he became more guarded with his reactions. With the information Dumbledore left him, Tom found his way to Diagon Alley where he bought some second-hand robes and spell books, along with his wand (yew, thirteen and a half inches, phoenix feather core) at Ollivander’s. He then made it to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, where the Hogwarts Express took him to school. Once arrived Tom was sorted into Slytherin.

Harry Potter Etymology | The Killing Curse (“Avada Kedavra”)
The phrase is of Aramaic origin meaning “be destroyed at this word”. J. K. Rowling seemed to support the second theory as the source, during an audience interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 15 April, 2004, where she had this to say about the spell’s etymology: “Does anyone know where avada kedavra came from? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means ‘let the thing be destroyed.’ Originally, it was used to cure illness and the ‘thing’ was the illness, but I decided to make it the ‘thing’ as in the person standing in front of me. I take a lot of liberties with things like that. I twist them round and make them mine.”
