Children of Blood and Bone
Review of Children of Blood and Bone - Tomi Adeyemi
Well hello there!
It has been a long ol’ time since I wrote a review here. Uni assignments, placement and that lil thing called a pandemic have meant that I have been busy, busy, busy and focusing on my mental health a lot. I have still been reading many a book (I’m currently on my 29th book of the year!), but I wanted to only do a blog post on books that really stood out to me, so that I…

Mother Knows Best/Disney Villains Series - Spoiler Free
Mother Knows Best/Disney Villains Series – Spoiler Free
Hola (I’m currently learning Spanish, soz)
Mother Knows Best is the fifth book in the Disney Villains series. I thought I’d reviewed some of the others but clearly I haven’t and just thought about it but never got round to it. Story of my life… These books give a bit of background about the villains (funny that) that appear in popular Disney films, such as Ursula and Maleficent.
One thing…

it’s completely acceptable to stay alive for tiny reasons. because you want to hear your favorite song one more time. because your dog will miss you if you leave. because the moon is just too pretty to never see again. because you haven’t seen the next season of a really good tv show. because you want to see the christmas lights this year. if you’re alive, you’re doing enough. if you’re surviving, i’m proud of you.

Wilde Women
Wilde Women review is now up!
Aloha Sprinklerinos! (You’re a true Louise fan if you know about that!)
Wilde Women is the third, and final (*cries*), book in the Robin Wilde series by Louise Pentland (previously known as Sprinkle of Glitter on YouTube). These books are about a single mum venturing her way through life, juggling her work as a MUA (make-up artist), dealing with the mums at school and trying not to fall back…

With Kit joining the MCU, I thought I’d write a few short notes on Black Knight and the greater movie ‘verse for non-nerds. I’m not expert in this character in particular but I have come across him in various comics, so here’s a brief description.
History: typically complicated and will no doubt be radically changed for the films, much like many other MCU movie characters. In short, there have been three Black Knights, one of whom was a bad guy who was the uncle of Dane Whitman, the version Kit will be playing. Although Dane was born in America, his family is British and he’s affiliated with many British superheroes, so I’m guessing that they’ll make him English for the films.
Powers: Nil! Sorry, friends. Not inherently, anyway. Just like Tony Stark, Hawkeye, Ant-Man and Wasp and many others, Dane Whitman doesn’t have any sort of superhuman abilities. However, he’s a scientific genius (seems like every second person in the MCU is!), supremely athletic, an incredible swordsman and expert horseman. Those last three sound familiar?
(At various times in his history he has been endowed with special abilities, e.g. as a result of using the magical Ebony Blade, but these didn’t become permanent features.)
Appearance: In the comics, he’s tall and bulky (heh), with brown hair and eyes. Not known for being soulfully beautiful, so there’s an upgrade! Occasionally costumed and caped, but is also seen in skinny jeans and a leather jacket. Ahem.
Affiliations with current MCU movie characters: The obvious one is Sersi of the Eternals, with whom he is in a relationship. He’s also worked with Doctor Strange, who helped him get rid of a curse on his sword. But more importantly, he actually becomes an Avenger. So, while the character is relatively unknown to non comic book geeks, there is a lot of potential for him going forward.
Movie Version: The Black Knight is appearing in the Eternals in what is likely to be a small role. Feige et al. have done this multiple times: a new character is initially introduced to the ‘verse by making a small but significant contribution in one film before going on to formally join an ensemble +/- a solo feature. Examples of such characters and their first appearances include Black Widow (Iron Man 2), Hawkeye (Thor), Black Panther (Captain America, Civil War) and the new Spider-Man (also Captain America, Civil War).
There were even rumours last year* that BK was being considered for his own film, possibly even a trilogy. Now, I wouldn’t get too hopeful about that, because it was probably only one of the many proposals being knocked around over at Marvel. Since he’s so unknown, I suspect they’ll wait to see how the character plays out on screen before making much of a commitment. If he does make another appearance, my guess is that it’ll be in the next Doctor Strange film. Their connection has already been teased in the first movie (and no, I didn’t pick up on this myself! Other more observant nerds did):
That there is a version of Black Knight’s helmet. The Ebony Blade was also supposed to be there (and was made for that purpose), but for some reason didn’t make it into the final cut.
So, there you have it. Don’t expect Kit to play a huge part in the Eternals, but let’s hope we’ll see more of him in future films.
* thanks @elephantandthedove for the heads up on that!

D23 Dissect: Kit Harrington Is Black Knight - Get Over It!
Due to the unexpected and frankly unwarranted barrage of controversy that the reveal of Kit Harington portraying Black Knight in the upcoming 2020 Eternals movie is getting, I thought it necessary to bring an unbiased opinion to the conversation.
By unbiased I mean acknowledging and not insulting Kit Harington fans who have strong opinions on who he should be playing in the MCU, but still respecting the character he is portraying and what it could mean for Harington in the MCU.

“Some people bring out the worst in you, others bring out the best, and then there are those remarkably rare, addictive ones who just bring out the most. Of everything. They make you feel so alive that you’d follow them straight into hell…”

“Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.”
— Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild (via books-n-quotes)
