Is there a tiny detail in one of your fics that you feel goes tragically unnoticed?

okay so i don't know if this is unnoticed but one time kanaya is trying to convince eridan she does actually care about him and she says "“I’m worried about you,” Kanaya says. “You may believe because I have treated you in a dichotomic fashion before I wouldn’t, but I do.”" anyways yeah she's referencing cutting him in half. which is probably pretty obvious but all my fics have so many details. i guess i think a lot of sollux gets lost sometimes too. like i'm frozen on mars lost on venus especially cause he's suchhhhh an unreliable narrator.

love how a lot of helm fics have sollux have amnesia of some form. but in to cage a sun i was like actually sollux has even more memories. yeah even more than that. right yeah. he's just. memoryfull.

You don't know why you thought Sollux would be aggressive with this, but he's not. If he doesn't actually want this, wouldn't it be easier to turn it into an act of violence rather than standing there, shy, smiling down anxiously, shifting on his feet? He bites his lip with his jagged fangs, and it makes your vascular system do flips at how cute he is.

For a self-indulgent second, you let yourself be heartbroken. There's a camera trained on you, and there's a live wire going wild in your chest. You're the one who wants him, and this cruel facsimile makes your lungs burn.

But you know it must be worse for him. You're the one who's hurting him. Isn't this some form of violation?

"I'm sorry, uhm--" he says, sounding almost flustered. Usually, he's trying so hard to be some kind of indifferent with you: it's so genuinely fun to see him in any form of vulnerable.

But it isn't for you. He has to be like this.

"Want me to take the lead, hm, Sol?" you ask. You wanted to say something much more insulting and cutting. It's second nature at this point to throw pitch his direction. But this is the best you can do without feeling like you're taking advantage of the situation more than you should. And you don't suck that much.

But to your surprise, Sollux doesn't posture back.

He just says, "Yeah."

You know he still doesn't want this (that hurts. That really hurts. Fuck). But the performance of permission still does something to you. So you start, and you can't help but stroke his face first, because he glows under your touch.

And when you kiss him, you mean to be like a movie. After all, that's basically what this is. If you're just some lead in a pitch romcom, then it should feel less like he has to kiss you, right? But there's this way, that he yields, and when you put your hands on him he lets you. And when you push him against the wall and force his hands up and hold him in place, he just moves with you. Any pretence of protection from the vulnerability ravaging your insides is lost. You could almost pretend he trusts you.

And that's the thing that does you in. You want to dissect him; you want to take him apart. You want him to let you. You kept acting like you had power over him when it was always actually a lie. But you want it. But only like this. Only freely given. Because he wants it. Something feels like it's simmering out of your chest, and it's going to drown even you.

But this isn't freely given. And you're probably taking too many liberties. He's not submitting to you (you know realised how much you even wanted that until he was vulnerable in front of you) -- he's submitting to the situation. You pull back, feeling stripped bare. You can't meet his eyes, and you feel somewhat like you're going mad. It was so naked of you. Your obvious, unwanted want. Your desperate, pathetic desire.

But you'll do your job well, so you smile at him. He still seems so flustered. You're just not immune to that. And you grab his hand, walk away. So no one has to witness you anymore. Feeling wings slicing up your torso. He drops his hand first.

And he's also the first to say, "Sorry."

saying ao3 needs to censor certain content is like saying a museum can't have still life art that includes strawberries because you don't like them.

these are not real strawberries. you do not have to, and in fact cannot, eat them. no one with a strawberry allergy will be harmed by looking at them. no migrant workers were exploited in the picking of these strawberries. there were no questionable farming practices or negative environmental impacts from growing or transporting them.

because - and i cannot stress this enough - they are not real strawberries.

if you don't like strawberries, you don't have to look at the paintings. in fact, you can get a map of the museum that lists what works are in what rooms and just. not go in there. if you see one by mistake, you can look away. just keep walking. there's plenty of other stuff to see.

yes, real strawberries can cause real quantifiable harm to real people.

but again. these are not real strawberries.

you may have whatever feelings you like about strawberries, and so can i. you can draw and write about whatever fruit floats your boat, and so can i, even if that happens to be strawberries. and we can hang our art side by side in the same gallery, provided you understand that my strawberries are not about you (and your kumquats are, shocker, not about me) and that - and this is true - neither are real.

and when the fascists break down the doors and grab all the strawberry paintings and heap them in the street and set them on fire, please know that they are coming for your kumquats next.

so if you want a place where you can show off your beautiful kumquat art safely, you're gonna have to tolerate having some strawberries in the next room.

ironically I guess in frozen on mars lost on venus i was also looking at similar issues regarding youth & unforeseen power dynamics & fear responses regarding sex & sexual immaturity. like unlike two ways to doom the situation is not one of consistent sexual abuse, but there IS a moment where both parties engage in sex despite 1.) being too scared to actually recognise whether or not they "want" what is about to happen 2.) can recognise that the other party IS scared but their respective fear responses make them not stop what is happening regardless (Sollux shuts down and goes into freeze response when he is being touched despite trying to explain that wasn't what he was looking for then gives into it, Eridan goes into a fawn response because of Sollux's anger at him and ignores the fact he can tell Sollux is Very Out Of It because he's more scared of external pressures and has already put himself into a routine of offering sexual favours for respite & (in his opinion) the "illusion" of someone wanting him around). however, given this is a human AU and both characters ARE very aware of consent and the fact that they did not stop a situation where the person was not enthusiastically into it, a lot of their dynamic then both rests on guilt or fear that the other person is in some way acting out of guilt. like they struggle with the intensity of what Sex Is To Them but also the baggage of having been in other situations (whether or not they are about sex) where they are powerless given their age and history. like a large part of their dynamic just somewhat hinges on their respective desires to be good to one another, but the inability to function always as a healthy presence due to the pressures of being a teenager with your life so out of your control and making mistakes that hurt people in that time of your life.

it's also like. people sometimes are very black-and-white with Eridan. like Eridan is absolutely not someone who based off canon itself is any more likely than the next person to perpetuate sexual violence. in canon, he is not actually harassing anyone and backs off when people reject him. and people who dislike him have a way of writing him in this role of someone who would harass or rape someone. which is like. patently not true. but he IS someone who is raised in an extremely violent society with no guidelines for how to avoid subjugating others or abusing power. in homestuck itself, he actually has very little power -- outside of his hope powers themselves, but even then, the way he wields them is another thing he does not truly intend or expect.

so it IS interesting to me what Eridan could do put immediately in a situation where he (someone who I'd argue is not the best at active empathy, not an insult to be clear but could be a factor in issues if not considered) has immense power over someone else. like there's a very real threadline between Vriska's obsession with Mindfang and her place in society and the way she assaults Tavros! Eridan is NOT the best at communicating or judging how others are feeling about him without them being very clear with him. the idea he knows jackshit about consent is highly unlikely, even if given knowing, he wouldn't want to violate it. So what situations could he be in where he WOULD be the perpetrator of sexual violence?

And that question is just compelling to me in a way I'm sure for many people it really wouldn't be which is totally fair. but I find Eridan a compelling person to grapple with the idea that he has in fact done something horrible and reframe his actions as well. because he is also someone who 1.) lives in a fuck-or-die society that inherently in itself degrades the concept of consent 2.) has been forced to orphan and has been the cause of his peers deaths for years and had to maintain his own internal interiority throughout 3.) is already having to come to grips with the violence he's done against others he cares about in the game 4.) is not raised with the same taboos around things such as "abusing power over lowbloods" -- this would be a point in his favour given his upbringing. Even if! the idea is horrendous to him, it isn't something that would flip his perception of himself 5.) while his own self-perception is not super stable, he does not change intent of others around him in canon except to further his own self destructive tendencies.

And to me this is just very compelling because I think he could realise he did something horrific when he did not intend that without flipping the narrative in a way that would be fueled by society around him. He would not switch to victim blaming or his role besides in emotionally-fueled initial moments. if you told him to his face "i don't want this" he wouldn't do it and respect it. if he came to the realisation "these parameters should have been indicative that the person didn't want it but I didn't know how to tell that sort of thing" he wouldn't do it again and respect it. does that erase the damage he may inflict by violating consent? no! but it does mean given any education within the right culture he never would. which makes him very compelling for me as someone who can both grapple with what they've done without reframing the situation to protect an internal sense of ego and blaming someone else out of guilt AND how culture itself is the vehicle for an incredible amount of violence that many people within it wouldn't actually wish to partake in if they could know how.

i'm like "oh oh why on earth would I ever be compelled to write a fic like two ways to doom" etc etc as if it's not imperative to my psyche to be able to grasp the way that the culture someone is in would allow them to do heinous things to someone they don't actually desire to hurt and how that same culture also enables malicious harassment that is unescapable as well within the confines of the outside world. like it's so important to me that rape and abuse and harassment are things that both happen unintentionally as a product of culture and power as well as very much intentionally and sometimes lie in between and sometimes you genuinely cannot tell the difference. that people who'd never want to associate with these things can still enact them and that it isn't a process of your own internal view of yourself or what you want to do that allows you to not hurt others. And there's this issue where if you have empathy for someone who is a perpetrator, it sometimes swings the entire framework of the situation in a way that is also not reflective and is the most destroying thing. but empathy and intent and clarity of the situation are things that may happen at the same time. things have nuance and people react differently depending on the power they have and the knowledge they have of the ways that power can be abused.
