Find the quality of the cause from which the effect did proceed. See it for what it is, separated from all that is material. Then consider the reason for its existence.

The Ant Kingdoms Friend
A long time ago in China, there was a distinct class of administrators & bureaucrats. They were called:The Mandarins. This is how, we in the west, referred to them. The Portuguese were some of the first to interact with the Chinese. Mandarin is derived from the Portuguese verb Mandar: to govern or rule.(check this info)
Back, during these times there was a young man whose most fervent dream was to join this class. He studied tirelessly for five years, knowing that only applicants with perfect scores would be admitted.
Finally, the day of his formal examination arrived. His testing would be a two day ordeal. The first day was comprised of oral question & answer, procedural & administrative competence & etiquette. The young man’s performance was flawless.
That evening as he was preparing for bed, the young man noticed a centipede crawling across the floor. The young man retrieved a pair of chopsticks defty caught the centipede and freed it in a shrub outside the Inn where he was staying. He thought no more of the incident & retired for the night.
The second day, consisted solely of a written examination. The young man had ten hours to complete this exam. After eight hours and forty one minutes he stood, approached the examiners dais, bowed, and offered his examination papers. A group of senior Mandarin officials scrutinized every brush-stroke of every character; Absolute perfection being the minimal passing  score.
As the Mandarins studied the last page they noticed that a brush-stroke, the size of a grain of rice was absent. They summoned the young man to inform him of his failure. As they gave him the terrible news; and when they pointed to his error, All observed perfection.
The senior officials were perplexed, until one of them reached for the paper, and the “rice grain” moved. It was a black ant. It had been startled, but immediately moved back into position; perfecting the faulty character. The examiners all peered down at the ant. They tapped on the table-top, picked up the paper and help it to the light. The ant remained in place. No food or grease residue was found. The Officials called in their highest ranking member after observing the ant still frozen in place, he dismissed the examiners and summoned the candidate. He addressed the young man,”Have you ever shown kindness to the ant kingdom”? The applicant pondered for a while and the responded: “Sir. When i was a young man I did. It was during the monsoon season. I was returning home from school. A creekbed near my home had flooded. I observed an ant hill becoming surrounded by the rising water. I stopped to place a long tree limb upon the edge of the ant hill where the occupants were surly trapped, and continued home. After sharing this recollection, the young man, whose head had been bowed looked at the chief examiner. The examiner’s poster frozen, his expression stern. The young man gazed upon the floor. Then he heard people entering the room. There were no words spoken. Then there was a resounding thump on the table. He dared not look. After minutes of silence; finally the candidate gazed upon the table and saw his freshly-stamped certificate. -End- -The Old Marine
