ok im back with the yapping:

Layton is Luke's key to being heard and taken serious.

Since Luke is a child, people won't take him serious or even listen to him. Luke trusted Layton quickly. I can imagine he did try to reach out to others but got dismissed quickly.

Other adults, such as Inspector Chelmey doesn't take him serious, until Layton speaks up.

Also it is very clear that Luke does not like being treated like a little kid.

obviously because no one takes him seriously due to his age.

I also think he's a bit self conscious about his ability to speak to animals because it seems unbelievable.

this might sound far stretched, but I also think this is why Luke is so self-sacrificing. Actions speak louder than words. (im too lazy to find fitting pics)

Luke thinks very highly of Layton because he treats him like an equal. He understands Luke and listens.

so ya ermm im too awkward to even continue yapping... but i hope people understand my vision? ergh.. i need to do an animatic of this now. i see something.
