Gothic Fashion in Ginger Snaps
Let me be a nerd and ramble about gothic fashion for a minute here, okay? Bear with me.
First off, no such thing as gothic fashion in Ginger Snaps! Period. There's this trend i noticed among Ginger Snaps fans where people tend to attribute the Fitzgeralds to the gothic subculture but in reality they barely have anything to do with it. Let's talk the surface level first - clothes.
Tumblr media
Lack of Explicit Gothic Fashion or Symbols
The sisters’ attire leans more towards a grunge or alternative style rather than the elaborate, Victorian-influenced look typical of gothic fashion. They wear muted, practical clothing, often layered in a way that aligns more with late 1990s counterculture trends than gothic elegance.
Their style lacks iconic gothic elements like lace, corsets, or heavy makeup that emphasizes paleness and dark contrast. Their appearance is more subdued, emphasizing isolation rather than a specific subcultural identity. Though, to be completely honest, i can see traces of gothic influence like Brigitte's giant black boots and overall modesty of their image.

Focus on Suburbia and Alienation Over Gothic Romanticism
Ginger Snaps is set in a suburban environment that starkly contrasts with the traditional gothic settings of decaying mansions or cemeteries. While there are horror elements, the story focuses more on suburban malaise and the struggles of adolescence rather than classic gothic tropes like existential despair or the supernatural rooted in tradition. The sisters’ obsession with death is clinical and performative, demonstrated through staged death photography rather than a deep connection to gothic romanticism or poetry. Their fascination is more rebellious than philosophical.
Tumblr media
Rebellion as Social Commentary, Not as a Gothic Statement.
The sisters rebel against societal norms, but their rebellion is rooted in frustration with suburban conformity and adolescence rather than gothic defiance of broader existential or religious norms. Their defiance is personal, not universal or symbolic of a larger gothic ideology.
And finally, the sisters' desire to have their own thing going, their wish to be unlike everybody else. Being and dressing like stereotypical goths they would consider too conformist. Goths are part of society, they want to be noticed, they want recognition. The sisters chose not to engage with society, so striving for recognition was not their thing (at least before Ginger started to enjoy boys' attention. Brigitte stayed an OG).
Gatekeeping rant over. Peace, you all!

" But here I am thinking "lycanthrope". That's crazy, huh? Book me in to the rubber motel, I'm officially all fucked up, right? " . . . " What if you're not? "
