glogolf fell victim to eileen and her competitive spirit almost weekly. she had mostly started hanging out here because they served drinks and it was easy for a large group to gather. but somehow she got lost in the side quest of trying to master all the mini putt courses. and now it was a place almost as familiar as the inside of barracuda.
tonight she was being stood up by her friends, after the rare occasion of her sending the invite rather than receiving one. there's no point in sulking, though, she's good on her own. eileen's halfway through a bottle of peach soju when she sees someone take a seat at the bar.
"hey," eileen glances over at jinam and recognizes him as someone who works at the hotel. "long day?" she gives a small knowing smile before lifting the shot glass and downing the alcohol. there's a small grimace at the aftertaste because peach starts to taste gross after a while. "you wanna do a shot?" eileen lifts the soju bottle like some kid boasting about their trophy.
after hours ft. @ofeileen
jinam could still feel the thin layer of sweat, pollen and soil that coated every inch of his skin; a sure sign of the warming atmosphere. getting home to shower would be a rebirth he'd have to soak in for a few minutes longer than usual — but there were other more pressing matters. the longer days and hotter temperatures left him drained at the end of his shift in ways colder months didn't, and an ice cold tap beer at glogolf had become something to look forward to.
he checked his phone to ensure that it was after nine and the bar was serving, before deftly slipping it back into the pocket of his jeans. it was already nearing ten o'clock, so he was in the perfect timeframe. as he approached the establishment, he shuddered at the eerie lighting inside. the murals on the walls were well done, but the way they lurched from within their art pieces under the black lights unnerved him somewhat.
quick footsteps carried him averse to courses themselves, eyes fixed on the safe haven of the bar. that was when he realized someone was already seated there. he was sure he recognized one of the tattoo artists from barracuda inc, eileen if he wasn't mistaken. it was a hell of a lot easier to trudge through these formalities in his head, but he figured that wasn't really fair, was it ? taking a careful seat a couple of barstools away from her, jinam folds his hands in front of him. "um, hey ?" is his initial contact, his tone indicative of having searched the annals of his mind for something more to say and turning up empty.

eileen shoots subin a glare, somewhere in between annoyance and amusement. she keeps quiet though and lets him enjoy his moment. it's not like subin's praise came rarely, but he only really used it when he meant it. which made it matter all that much more.
"who knows? maybe this streak of luck will last," eileen adds to give just an ounce of hope. maybe she'll just wake up in a good mood and let the rude comments roll of her back. "if i ever bite my tongue in front of the elderly you'll know something's wrong with me." she jokes, giving a short laugh.
eileen follows subin's lead after he locks up and they start towards the festival. she gives an enthusiastic nod (or as enthusiastic as eileen can get) at the thought of kkwabaegi. "you know what i could go for right now? auntie anne's pretzels." she lets the childhood memories indulge her cravings. "that used to be my go-to after school snack. i always burnt my tongue 'cause i couldn't wait to eat it." suddenly she's eleven again, getting off the new york city subway and impatiently following the smell of freshly baked pretzels. too bad daegu only has one location.
"did you have a favourite childhood snack?" she asks as she scans the food booths located at the festival. the whole buzz of the carnival couldn't help but bring up thoughts to her youth.
"ssh, i'm praising you, don't spoil it." subin shushes her playfully, raising his index finger at her in a quiet gesture. it's very true that he does end up losing a couple of years from his lifespan during the times that any elderly shows up in barracuda. it was almost reflex the way his eyes would fall on eileen before subin was taking a step forward to deal with them himself while hoping that they'll just mind their own business and keep any comments about their negative opinions on tattoos and people with tattoos for themselves because honestly no one even asked for them, usually the whole experience is like waiting for a time bomb to explode and subin is just there for damage control.
the thing is that it isn't like subin agrees with their more traditional views. considering how many tattoos he has around his body (nevermind that the reason he did them is nothing noble like i wanted to have art on my skin or this is just a way of me expressing my true self or any other "inspirational" and deep motive like that), it'd be beyond hypocritical of him to think badly of those kinds of body modification. besides as much as subin would also be hypocritical in telling those people to mind their own business, he's at least smart enough to mostly keep his unsolicited opinion to himself or to comment with others where the person in question isn't there to hear it.
subin sighs heavily as a dramatic gesture when eileen reminds him that this "peace" might be very short lived depending on how long it takes for someone to make a comment that won't sit well with her, finishing the rest of the ritual to lock up. "please, don't remind me how short lived my happiness is." he says obviously joking, a more depressive part of his mind adding that it isn't like his happiness is already dead anyway.
the manager makes a mental checkup to make sure he isn't forgetting anything before he's finally by eileen's side, barracuda properly closed behind them before he starts walking to the festival. "hm, sounds good enough." he agrees easily for once. "a client also commented that they're having kkwabaegi so we should get some of those too."

there's not many friends that eileen keeps in touch with, especially not from high school. moving to daegu right at the brink of her teenage years made her act out in more ways than one. and if high school wasn't already enough of a hellhole, her grandparent's constant judgement and comparison was the icing on the cake. maybe that's why she's learnt to be content with her own company and do her own thing. like coming to haesmuli cinema alone to catch a two p.m screening.
eileen steals a handful of popcorn from her fresh bag when she hears her name being called. she turns to the source with a curious expression. it takes a second for her to recognize the other but when she does it's unmistakable: lee minyoung was blinking back at her. of all the people from her past she could've run into, of course she runs into her.
"me? i'm here for spiderverse," her second viewing of it actually, "what are you doing here?" eileen gives minyoung a glance over before regaining some of the composure she's lost from the surprise and it's as if they're back in high school again. "ah, don't tell me. you're here to sign autographs and greet fans or something." she takes a moment to remember where exactly they were standing. "i didn't know sunset galleria did red carpet events."
( ♡ ) closed starter for : ↳ @ofeileen
high school. it was a time of her life that minyoung honestly never thought of. she was never a particularly active student, always choosing to do the bare minimum of what was required to graduate. gone were the days of her wanting to stand out and be the best there ever was. but now that she looked back on it, she was still riding high on the fortunes of her golden past during those years. despite no longer being attached to the name, miae, she certainly put on airs to ensure that those around her knew that she was still just as special. present minyoung was just as embarrassed of her past behavior as teenage minyoung would be to see how fall she'd fallen from her high horse. the little girl who was once being played on the big screen was now collecting tickets and directing viewers to their theaters. but it was better than nothing, right? or so she thought. "eileen roh?" minyoung was startled to have run into a blast from her past; part of her hoped she'd actually been mistaken. "is that seriously you? what on earth are you doing here?"

eileen is as much fascinated by aeri's delicate pastry work as aeri is by eileen's fine line tattoo work. getting a private lesson from candycake's renowned baker wasn't that hard considering their first meeting and the budding friendship that soon followed. but eileen is grateful nonetheless. she watches the other's demonstration with full attention and can't help but smile at aeri's dedication to the craft. there's something special about watching someone do what they loved. this was her passion, the one spent years in the making. and it felt like eileen was being invited inside to take a peek.
"you make it look so easy," she says fully knowing it's way harder than it looks and that aeri has had years of practice. "you can't yell at me if i mess this up." eileen gives a laugh as she takes the bud aeri has started and picks up a smaller ball of fondant. she works on flattening the ball and wrapping it around the bud. she takes an extra moment to make sure the petal is sitting in a natural way like an actual rose petal would.
"fondant's a lot more malleable than clay," eileen voices her observation aloud. hours spent at the pottery studio have led up to this very moment, it seems. she wants to impress aeri and make her proud, after all. eileen wraps another petal and holds it up for the other girl to inspect. "does this look right?"
to: open
as much as her relationship with the art her father taught her since she was able to ask how macarons are made, aeri can't deny that there's a level of familiarity to the world of patisserie that she sometimes dares to classify as comforting. her muscles so used to the movements of making a simple rose out of fondant that she barely has to pay attention to it and the decoration still is shaped beautifully— perhaps flawlessly under her ministrations. but this is a demonstration so aeri makes sure to slow down her movements and to comment about anything that might be important for her temporary student.
"see? this is our little bud." she shows off the cone that she just shaped. "so now we only need the petals. they're very easy to make, the tricky part is to put then around our bud." aeri points out, remembering how much she was scolded when she was younger because her roses looked to weird. "you just flatten out the smaller balls we already have." she teaches, demonstrating exactly what she was saying, "and then you just put them around the bud like this."
"now your turn! if you want you can just finish the one that i started." she offers as well, knowing that the starting from scratch might be a little more complicated than picking up one that is already somewhat done, being a much more visible example that way. "don't forget to open up the petals just a little when you're done so it looks prettier." aeri reminds them gently, eyes attentive to see how the other person would do and also to step in if any help was needed.

eileen notes zurie's pursed lips despite her being perfectly still. she didn't want the other to think she had to remain unmoving for the duration of the appointment. she appreciates the gesture, though. eileen continues to work in silence, taking her time when she got to the details. when it comes to her work, she was a perfectionist.
"is it busy season again? what's with the rush?" she knew the carnival was partly to blame for the long hours the sunset mall employees were all facing but it would be gone before next week. a small amused smile grows on eileen's face as zurie hurries to explain herself. "i was waiting to see it with you too," she replies. there's no shame when eileen says it either— she has always been clear to admit what she wants. especially with her closest friends.
the marker is soon capped as eileen finishes with the layer of details and is satisfied with the image before her. "we can go see what's good at the booths after we're done," she suggests as she prepares her tools for the real thing. "now's the time to stretch if you need to." in a routinely manner she preps the tattoo gun and ink, while her stomach fills with the ghosts of butterflies. even if she's done this a hundred times she always got a little bit nervous to go ink to skin. after taking a sip of water she turns back to zurie with her tools. "let me know if it gets too much at any point," she says sincerely before starting on the tattoo.
the tickle of the markers on zurie's skin had her suppressing giggles like no one's business, though she forced herself to remain perfectly still while eileen went to work. her tightly pursed lips squeezed through the worst of it; zurie was ridiculously ticklish and eileen's light though wasn't helping in the slightest. she focused her eyes on the other, trying to take her mind off the distracting sensation, mesmerized by how honed in eileen was. her features were so tinged with passion and dedication for what she was doing and zurie's eyelashes quirked curiously with bob of her friend's head.
she kept her gaze averted from the unfinished artwork on her arm for now; from concept to completion, she wanted it to be a surprise. she trusted eileen fully to do whatever she felt was best, so unless she absolutely needed her input on something, she'd willingly stay in the dark. her ankle twitched, restless from her own inactivity. she was typically someone who always had to be on the move, physically and metaphorically. but ever since she'd taken the job at sephora, she found herself ever so slightly stopping to smell the proverbial roses a bit more. there was a strikingly beautiful world around her, and she wasn't entirely sure why she'd never let her faculties be clear enough to appreciate it.
as eileen's questions settled on her ears after a few heartbeats, zurie's gaze fell back upon her. "i've mostly been preparing for next week. i have a rush of appointments," her words are vacant, as though her mind found it difficult to connect to them. "i'll head to the carnival later. i mean, you weren't there so..." she trails off, before her eyes double in width. "i mean! i just meant that...you know, i wanted to make sure you had enough time to finish and everything," she explains, smiling innocently, ears burning red. she hadn't meant to sound so clingy, but it was admittedly one of many flaws.

"work was long. my last appointment was a large back piece that lasted four hours, i thought my wrist was gonna fall off," she goes into detail out of habit and has to bite her tongue so she doesn't give him a rundown of her day.
"i'm trying to," eileen echos the laugh and looks back at the bar where her friends continued to party without her. "all i'm missing is sodam. she knows how to get me drunk fast." she smiles lightly at the thought of their mutual friend- the same friend that had introduced the two and the same friend that fed eileen heaps of alcohol when she was getting over their break-up.
there's the slightest twist in her stomach at the thought of sora getting drinks with an old coworker. she knew it was stupid and unreasonable to feel even a pang of jealousy but here she was anyways. "i hope you had a good time," she pushes that feeling back down and replaces it with slight concern. "are you okay getting home?"
eileen turns her gaze towards the sky at his sudden offer and stays quiet for a moment. "sora.. you know that's not a good idea," she finally speaks up, her head starting to feel heavy from the buzz of alcohol.
then with the same stupidity from earlier, "where are you now?"
He hums as a response to his name coming out of her mouth — allowing himself to momentarily indulge in the way it sat on her tongue for a few seconds. The air that surrounds him thickens, and it almost feels like he’s suffocating; until she speaks.
“How was work?” Sora questions, because routines come easy to him just as bad habits he should break. And this, right now, was becoming a bad habit. “Oooh, are you guys getting fucked up?” The boy can’t help but laugh, “Have fun.” It feels like old times and perhaps that’s why his heartstrings feel strained again, the dull buzz of heartache creeping up his spine.
“Out. Just got off.” An hour ago, but he doesn’t think she gives a shit. “Old coworker stopped by, got some drinks with her,” He yawns. “Drank too much.” Another laugh spills out, his vision getting hazier. “I’m going home now.”
There is a brief moment he can feel himself wanting to cross the line further.
Fuck it, he decides. He will.
“You should come over later. You know, if you’re free.”

"you're right. it's just hair," eileen takes a deep exhale at the reminder. she shuts her eyes as a hair stylist rinses through her hair. "i've never gone lighter than brown before." it wasn't a drastic change, but blonde highlights were new for her. when the stylist steps away she opens her eyes and whispers at bowie. "if it turns out ugly you'll tell me the truth, right?"

"don't you know? i already have t-shirts and posters made." she grins at the idea, fully on-board to support him. "go on then, i got you." she waves him forward before quickly writing out his name on her notes app and holds up her phone right there and then. "moon jaewon you're so cool!!!" eileen raises her voice as she pretends to cheer— not at all concerned about embarrassing herself or jaewon. "wow, isn't he so handsome? i can't believe he's single!" she adds when she sees a pair of heads turn to look their way. so much for supporting his chances at meeting the love of his life.
laughter bubbles from her as she finishes her performance. this almost delirious state always came after a long work day. nothing that jae wasn't already used to. sometimes they needed to be a little goofy so that their brains didn't grow mold.
jokes aside, eileen would support jaewon in anything. it came with the unconditional love she had for her barracuda family. they taught her how to love.
"i'll grab the next one then," eileen finally agrees. that or she'll show up with his lapis order the next morning. she's just thankful that the line is short, at this point she was starving. she helps grab their order as they turn to make the walk up to the rooftop. "oh yeah. i had a bad record of ditching class. sometimes there wasn't even a good reason for it, i simply did not want to sit in algebra." eileen lightly laughs at the memories. "in hindsight, i probably should've made a bigger effort to study."
finally reaching the top floor eileen tries the door and to her surprise it clicks open. she sends a grin to jae as she holds it open for him and takes a minute to soak in the fresh air. this is exactly what they needed. "how 'bout you, though? were you a good kid in high school?"
"only if you peek from around the corner and offer me your unconditional, mental support. i want a cheering kit with my face on it, too." he raises his fists into the air, giving them a meek shake. "go jaewon! go jaewon! obviously, quietly. don't ruin my moment. what if i meet the love of my life?"
he laughs then as the absurdity of situation plays out inside his mind: this image of eileen, jumping around with excitement and cheering him on as if he were a celebrity. what he finds the most endearing, though, is that he can see it happening; obviously, not to the vivid imaginative extent, but support nonetheless. a year passes quick, surrounded by the endless sound of machine buzzing around them, of alcohol buzzing within them, of them buzzing around one another. it's like an extension of him, having met her, not just due to them being just a day apart. understanding, comfort and friendly love it's safe to say that jaewon would go to hell and back, if only eileen asked.
it's why he laughs then, too, waving his hand around once more; "eh? we need to compare our notes. it's on me, either way. i won't hear objections."
the chitter-chatter that surrounds them comes mostly as background filler. his gaze wanders for a bit, almost as if he were scanning the surrounding for something. truthfully, he just enjoys seeing people minding their business, for once. they have the festival to thank for. "oh?" he turns to eileen, raising his eyebrow at her. "yeah, now that you say it. guess teenagers never change i don't blame them. i know i'd also rather be anywhere else but in a hagwon. guilt that comes with it and all."
the queue is surprisingly short & when they receive the paper bags (green consciousness!) it takes jaewon all willpower not to start eating then and there. the rooftop, he reminds himself. instead, he turns to inquire; "were you skipping too?"

do you ever see yourself as a parent?
"i don't know. sometimes i think i could do a much better job than my parents but that's not really a reason to bring a child into the world. sometimes i worry i'd end up being just like my parents— i'm pretty scared of being a terrible mom so i don't know if i could ever see myself as a parent."

first impression tbh for two coworkers!
"my first impression of jaewon was actually through his work. he's an incredible, incredible artist and i had a feeling i could learn a lot from him. and then when we first met it felt very familiar — i instantly knew he had a good heart. my first impression of subin was that he was very welcoming and unbearably charming. i had some apprehension from my past job and thought he'd turn out to be a dick of a manager but he's completely the opposite."
