before the rule change allowing two victors from the same district, katniss was mostly concerned with peeta as a physical threat. like, when she sees him crying as he leaves his home for what he believes is the last time, she notes that his broad shoulders and strength will be hard for people to overlook as anything but a threat (thg, 40). and she of course mentions how he stands a chance in the arena (unlike her) because of his strength (thg, 89).
yet, when they actually get into the arena, peeta's physical strength only helps him so far. in fact, the most important skill that he had in the arena (y'know, the one that kept him alive) was his ability to camouflage into the surrounding woods (thg, 252). the same skill that katniss scoffed at in the training center because you can't "frost someone to death" (thg, 96). but that was what saved him.
though, these skills (although crucial for his survival) are not considered to be peeta's signature weapon. so, what is?
his words.
katniss hints at his ability with words in the first book. the way that peeta can so easily lie to cover for her (thg, 77). or him announcing his love for her on national television as a strategy to make her more desirable to sponsors (thg, 132).
and flash forward to catching fire, where katniss can fully recognize the power that peeta's words have on other people. the way that he can move a crowd like in district eleven (cf, 17). the way that he knows the perfect response (cf, 88). and can convince anyone of anything (cf, 98)
and by the end of the series, katniss comes to recognize the real peeta, her peeta, by his way with words. the way he can comfort pollux (mj, 255). or compliment tigris (mj, 288). when his words start to become his again, that is when she truly recognizes that hijacked peeta is inching his way back to her (mj, 259). because her peeta can wield words to comfort the softest souls just as much as deliver a crushing revelation that shakes the even capitol.
and once that is understood, so many aspects of the series make sense. especially peeta reaction to katniss's attempts to sacrifice herself for him.
because in the first games, when katniss is struggling to just let peeta die after the rule is changed at the end, peeta launches into a speech about how much he loves her and what his life would be without her (thg, 343).
and similarly, during the quell, while trying to convince katniss to let him sacrifice himself for her, he prepares a long speech about how people need her and that she needs to survive for them (cf, 100). and he would continue talking to convince her except her kisses stop him (cf, 100). so, it is clear that peeta knows that he has a significant strength in using his words and will use that to his advantage.
but that is what makes mockingjay even more interesting. especially the let me go/ i can't interaction. because typically, if katniss were to try to kill herself, peeta would launch into a monologue to convince her not to.
but he doesn't.
now, some people might just chalk that up to the fact that this is a new, post-hijacked peeta. and this "new" version of peeta is not as good with words. but that view is simply overlooking how this same post-hijacked peeta was able to eloquently convince katniss of why she needs to continue to move forward in her plan to kill snow (mj, 277). and is the same person who launched into a passionate monologue to try to convince haymitch to not vote for another hunger games (mj, 315). so he is very much still capable of moving people with his words.
yet, at this moment, when katniss life is actually on the line, he doesn't invoke fancy rhetoric or logical reasoning. because when you think about it, everything about this interaction is so raw. and borderline animalistic. katniss, desperate to escape the pain that this new world promises, reverts to a very primal state. she starts kicking and biting like an animal (mj, 317). and screaming for someone to kill her (mj, 317). and snarling at peeta to let her go (mj, 317).
so is it any surprise that peeta meets her feelings with a raw desperation of his own (mj, 317). one that can not truly be explained through fancy rhetoric or logic. one that is so powerful that he can only get out two words as he rips the pocket from katniss's sleeve, watching the deadly pill fall to the ground.
so, sometimes i think about how peeta would be feeling right after that moment. what he would be feeling as katniss is being lifted away from him and the crowd moves to trample president snow.
and i just think about him looking at his hand soaked in blood. noticing the wound from katniss's bite that he never really noticed until then. because it didn't really matter in comparison to what she was planning on doing.
and so i think about him realizing that he is shaking. shaking at the thought of being left alone in such a cruel world. shaking at the thought of never being happy again. shaking at the terrifying thought that a world without his lover might have been a reality.

I love GUTS because it’s made for 20 year olds. Which is why I think so many older swifties hate it lol. like yeah I’m sure you can relate to revenge and heartbreak but you don’t feel the untamed rage anymore that you have at 19-23 and I love that this album just captures it perfectly

with gale, katniss sees no point in talking about things that might have been (cf, 53). when gale suggests their relationship progressing if peeta died in the arena, katniss is unsure whether she would actually want that relationship (cf, 53). and concludes that regardless, she would never be free with the reaping looming over her children (cf, 53). because with gale, katniss (1) is never really sure if she actually wants a relationship with him and (2) can never forget about their looming reality.
but she lets herself slip with peeta. because she feels so warm and relaxed and there is something about being with him that makes her forget the cruelty of the world (even in the games) and bask in the happiness she feels. (cf, 70).
and when peeta suggests that katniss might be pregnant with their child, she takes on a different tone than before with gale. she no longer questions if that is what she wants. in fact, she implies that it could be true (cf, 73). that she really could have a child with the boy who basked with her in the golden light just a few hours before (cf, 70) the one whose child she dreams about being happy and safe in the future without the games (cf, 101). the one who she really loves (mj, 330).
and people still have the audacity to say that katniss settled for peeta over gale.

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
Katniss actually said that if not for the existence of the Games and Panem's shitty state in general, that she, at 17 years old, could possibly be married and pregnant. Full-on teen mothering it with her dandelion in the spring if Panem could chill out for a sec and stop killing children. And then she proceeded to fantasize about Peeta and his child safe in the meadow. This thought alone gave her one of three nights of restful sleep without drugs post-Games during the series (the other two being when she was in Peeta's arms).
And yet when the Games did end permanently and Katniss indeed went ahead and married/committed to Peeta and had a family with him at about 30 years old, some people still did a surprise Pikachu face and complained it was out of character.
WHAT MORE DID SHE HAVE TO DO TO FORESHADOW THE ENDING?

THIS, I love Stefan and I adore caroline, but shawty BAE dude dated a rando when you were left to try and bring his dead ex and brother back to the land of living. He basically got convinced by your mother on her death bed to be with you (not saying it wasn’t genuine on all parts) but you would’ve been Klaus’s whole world not just a back ground character
Yep yep and forever yep
Klaroline end fist than math
