Going to another oddities expo this weekend so here's a reminder to all my fellow weirdos and freaks out there:
Most bat taxidermy is NOT ethically sourced, and are poached bats killed for display. Do not support the bat trade.
Most human remains are NOT ethically sourced. A lot of bones come from genocide victims or are stolen from graves in 3rd world countries. Yes, I am fully aware that not all medical specimens that were donated stay in schools and hospitals, and they get rid of them eventually. Yes I know that people who are donated, especially in the past, did not leave any next of kin info or a "Hey here's my family for when ya finally decide to bury me lol" sheet. Yes, I know musuems can't take all of the skeletons we have. No, I don't know what to do about it, as this is a very complex issue that cant be figured out by one bitch whos half awake on tumblr and desperately needs to go to sleep, but I do know that person who donated their skeleton to science did NOT consent to being on your wall or your shelf. Yes, I am fully aware some people wouldn't mind that (Hell, I'm one of em), but nobody donates their body to an institution secretly hoping that they'll really get to be used as a decoration on some weird fucker's wall afterwards.
Please kindly recognize these things and act accordingly as you go to expos and cons, large and small.
Also, this should go without saying but, serial killer merchandise is not an "oddity". It's a sick and disgusting way to profit off of the victims of real murderers. You do not belong in our spaces. Kindly fuck off.

They had a fun corner in the natural history museum in Bern about the taxidermy process, and they showed the effect the eyes have on how realistic or uh. disturbing. a mount is
The first fox had all black eyes. Not super realistic for those who know red foxes usually have orange or greenish eyes, but still pretty cute
The second one had normal fox eyes. I think they could've gone with a size or two smaller, but still. Regular orange eyes with a vertical pupil as it should be. But then. Oh. Oh no.
Human eyes 👁👁
#oh GOD i love this#i really want the human eyed fox tbh#vulture culture#taxidermy#fox.#natural history museum bern#museum

Not gonna lie, the Oddities and Curiosities Expo here seemed a bit smaller this year, especially with vendors. Idk if it was because the venue it was at was also hosting a huge high school basketball tournament in the same building at the same time so it wasn't in it's usual spot, or if it's the new ban on human remains being sold there, or just people not having the time and or money to vend at a big touring convention this year, but it was very odd, especially seeing as I live in a pretty big city.
It also felt like there was a lot less bone sellers/taxidermy and specimen sellers this year too. I'm always happy to see more artists but I also was shocked at just how there seemed to be less people selling specimen/taxidermy/stuff incorporating bones into their art, and a lot more people selling the typical metal skull, bat, and eyeball rings you'd get for wayyyy cheaper on Aliexpress, as well as Squishables and other spooky/horror adjacent plushies and action figures from Funko and NECA.
Regardless, I got some amazing stuff as per usual and had a fantastic time! But still, I really hope to see more people selling taxidermy or bones or art with both next year..

Hey. I'm Ki. Welcome to my blog for oddities and curiosities. Here you shall find the following:
Taxidermy
Wet Specimens
Animal Bones
Your usual weird stuff/art that comes with Vulture Culture in general
Other Cool Oddities and or Curiosities
If any of that is your bag, welcome! I literally just made this blog before going to bed for work so if you follow, expect some reblogged posts and posts of my own popping up sometime this week, as well as this weekend when I head out to the Oddities and Curiosities Expo! :)
This being said: this blog WILL contain photos of dead insects and animals, and while I try to keep on top of tagging, I am still going to issue a MASSIVE trigger warning for the content of this blog. It shouldn't have anything too graphic, but regardless, I figured I'd put that out there.
One Last Note Because This Site Is Filled With Idiots Sometimes and I Do Not Want To Have To Deal With Said Idiots In My Inbox:
All specimens in my collection have been acquired ethically/purchased from ethical sellers. I do NOT condone the killing of animals for taxidermy purposes. (And if you do/do so, I hope you get hit by a bus!)
I am located in the United States and, therefore, follow the Migratory Bird Act, and do not condone anyone breaking a federal law in order to add to their collection. (And if you're doing so, you really shouldn't be posting about it online anyway!)
And lastly..
I do NOT condone nor collect taxidermy of bats or people. Most bats you may see at shops both online and in person, as well as certain conventions, are usually killed for taxidermy purposes. Most human remains on the market are those of genocide victims, people who were stolen from their graves and sold in different countries, and medical specimens who donated their bodies to universities after death (Who did NOT consent to being your on your mantel/turned into a shitty guitar pick/dice/etc., by the way.)
On this blog we have respect for the dead and the environment. Miss me with any stupid arguments about doing the opposite, argue with the wall and/or your momma.
