Iām in love with game Ellie, but I canāt lie show Ellie is just way better as a protagonist. Itās like resident evil, adapting the first game is hard because it introduces important characters but itās just walking around looking into rooms. It works bc you are the protagonist.
I genuinely donāt think game Ellie would work as a show character. The game works because we are controlling her, but if Ellie just went round being all broody- why should I watch it? The reason we like Joel is bc despite everything heās charismatic.
I also think the show does a better job of showing why Ellie is in the wrong for leaving Dina. She has *everything*. I also think show Ellie is just more interesting. Sheās insanely happy sometimes and incredibly angry others. She feels guilty for not thinking of Joel because sheās able to feel happy and she has so much to feel happy for. But also the show has always been about hope. Itās always been about protecting people you love and loving people despite everything.
Also, they act like kids because they ARE KIDS. Jackson isnāt fedra, theyāre not military so of course theyāre not gonna be fucking militants. Ellie has a love-hate for violence but if she walked around being all moody? boring. I donāt wanna watch that.
The show has its flaws, but honestly game Ellie would be a boring protagonist.

Someone on tumble said: what may make a compelling main character in a game does not make a compelling main character in a show.
Canāt wait to be able to enjoy this show without yāall fucking yapping about how itās not an exact remake of the damn game

oh but i thought they were straightwashing dina? oh but i thought they were erasing her bisexuality? hmm turns out being patient with storytelling before jumping to conclusions pays off!

Okay I have thoughts about Joel. He cannot and will not take any responsibility for what heās done.
He shows time and time again that he canāt hold himself responsible for anything heās done. All the people he killed, all the lives he ruined, he sees his bad deeds redeemed by saving Ellie- but he canāt hold himself responsible for saving her either.
Sheās not mad he saved her, sheās mad he LIED. And Joel refuses to see it. In his conversation with Gail he canāt even admit that he hurt her, he leaves after saying he āsavedā Ellie.
āIām not responsible for managing other peopleās emotionsā is another refusal to admit that, whether he likes it or not, he hurt Ellie badly.
Gail bringing up her husband only serves to show that Joel canāt or wonāt bring himself to see that he hurt Gail- whether he did the right thing or not.
Joel wants to keep everyone close and sweep things that go wrong under the rug so that no one leaves, but this only means that open wounds fester.

The change with Eugene, to me, read that he turned/got bit and Joel had to put him down.
Itās meant to show that while people can ādo the right thingā the people affected by it are still allowed to be angry. Itās about how Joel saved Ellie ādid the right thingā but he lied and sheās angry about it. Gail offers him the same chance Ellie did to own up to his choices which he doesnāt take.
If Joel stands by his choices but canāt even say what he did, does he actually believe he did the right thing?
Is anyone really disappointed in the first ep???? Or just me???? Iām struggling accepting the fact that they did so well with the first season, as far as staying really true to the game, then this season they are taking a lot of creative liberties that i feel are just useless in the grand scheme of things. Thatās not to say all the liberties they took were bad but i think some of them are just dumb. Like Eugene being in a relationship with Gail, and Joel killing him. What was the point of that? Why would Joel kill someone who served alongside his brother in the Fireflies? I know they are going to probably build off that more but for rn itās pissing me off.
Another example of my frustrations is my favorite scene of the episode, when Ellie attacks the clicker. it was so true to her combat style in the game. Then I think about my biggest frustration with the second season, being that Abby is not at all like her character in the game, as far as build and sure as hell not combat style. This has nothing to do with the looks of a character, but more so due to the fundamental reasons that Abby was built the way she was. Abby bulked up out of a need for making sure she never feel weak, like she did when her dad was killed. She felt helpless so she made sure she would never feel that way again. It just feels ridiculous that we got accurate combat style for Joel and Ellie, but I know the same thing canāt be said about Abby. I love Kaitlyn Denver but peace and love she is not going to be able to accurately represent that combat style. I was trying to be optimistic and hoped that we would at least see cgi or something. However, from the sneak peek we got after the episode was done, I just donāt think those expectations are going to be met.
Leading into the fact that I love Dina so so so so much. I love that they gave her a relationship with Joel. it adds so much to the story. I think she has been phenomenal and by far one of the best adaptations. However, personally i am not seeing the chemistry between dina and Ellie. it feels incredibly one sided, Dina giving her all. I know thatās how it was in the game, because ellie was too shy. But we still got chemistry. Iām not seeing that at all with Ellie in the show. It feels forced, I never once felt that about the game.
Obviously Iām not trying to shit on it too hard being that only one ep is out right now. I just feel letdown, especially since the first season was so good. I really hope that I can overlook this and enjoy it. But this game changed my life and it deserves to be done right.
I have no one to rant about this to lol please donāt hate me yall. I just got to know if anyone feels the same.

She gave Joel a chance to own up to his decision and he LIED. To her face!! She trusts him implicitly and he lied. Thatās what hurts her.
(I think it also maybe looks like the fact he lied meant he wasnāt secure in his decision. Like maybe Ellie sees it as if he had told her the truth it meant that he was sure he did the right thing. The fact that he hides it means that even heās not sure)
I get that Ellie's pissed that her choice was taken away but, like... her choice was taken away either way because she was never AWAKE to give her consent. But she's never had somebody care about her this goddamn much. Ever!!! She said, "Everybody I have ever cared about has either died or left me." EXCEPT FOR FUCKING JOEL!!!!!!!!!!! And he didn't leave her again!!!!! HE DIDN'T LEAVE HER!!!!
