What are the best animated angel wings you’ve seen? What would you suggest to someone designing them?

The first wings that come to mind that I super enjoyed were the wings on the Angel character in Xmen.

The underwing coverts follow the line of the wingbone, the wings connect a bit lower to his back, there’s a solid line on the bottom edge of the wing

just look at them. The primaries have the right shape, with the third and fourth being longest, and they taper differently than the secondaries (and do so CORRECTLY).

lol look he’s missing a secondary on his right wing and you can see the pinfeather coming in. That’s so GOOD. That’s such a small, good detail.

They fold decently close to his back, though are very messy, poor boy, someone help him preen please, but anyway the coverts look right at least.

And then there’s the MOVEment. The movement is. So good. I can feel those muscles moving the wings, all the movement COMES from the limb, rather than acting like the wing is something all muscle. The feathers wobble like they’re attached to the limb above rather than being some kind of amalgamation of solid mass. God it’s just gorgeous.

Similarly, the flight animation is amazing. The way the wings edge open? Very good. Snapping open wings when something as heavy as a human is in freefall?? would almost certainly pull a muscle or even break the wing bone. Easing them open like this is beautiful.

My only complaint is the physics of the legs (human legs are just. fucking heavy and there’s no support for them during flight because we can’t fold them up like birds can, but, you know, dude’s ripped so I’ll give him a pass- he’s planking the shit out of his legs to keep them there though, you should just know that).

I can’t find gifs of the rest of his flight but trust me when i say I was always impressed with it in this movie.

The thing is, you can TELL that these animators didn’t just look at how birds move, they understood what causes the kinetics to do what they do. They didn’t copy/paste wings onto this boy the way that, like, Maximum Ride’s wings, but they didn’t fuck it up and just do whatever they approximately thought looked cool, like Lucifer’s wings. They used the correct feather patterns for bird wings. They used the correct kinetics of the wing bones and feathers.

Now, is it entirely the best? Eh. I don’t think that there’s really a way around connecting the wings to the body where they do. Bird wings connect at the top of the scapulas, but humans are…. Not Like That, and while it would make more sense in the “flight capable” sense to have the bones connect at like, the middle of the back and have some sort of abdominal structure for musculature and a webbing to connect to the shoulder for lift or something, I think we’re all willing to suspend disbelief enough. They could also use longer secondaries, just being bigger overall.

The major things I would tell someone wanting to make/animate wings that look good? Remember that wings are LIMBS. They have rules for how they can bend, and the feathers are not appendages tacked onto those wings. They amount to big, stiff hairs that birds have minimal muscular control over outside of the actual flight feathers. And size matters. Each wing should never be shorter than the height of the person it it attached to and preferably you’d have it be much longer if possible. Bird wings have a relatively short humerus because they have a relatively short body. Extend that shit for humans. You can put a lot of length on a folded wing by giving them a longer humerus and radius/ulna.

Anyway, that would be my 2 cents on wings in animation.
