Some wholesome random headcanons for Lark in Dragon Age.

-- When Lark was 10 or 11, she had to learn horseback riding, and as a gift to her, Viago let her pick out any horse at the auctions. She could've picked a fine horse of impeccable breeding, but no, she chose the Antivan Shire horse, which is bred to be war horses/farm horses. She wouldn't take no for an answer, and so Lark got the biggest horse in the stables, which she named Alfonso. When Lark was away, Viago made sure Alfonso was taken care of.

-- Lark quickly bonded with Varric and adores him. She was taken under his wing, and he became a mentor / parental figure. I headcanon that Sebastian likes to send Varric gifts from time to time, and one was a beautiful Tartan shawl, which Varric gifted to Lark during their travels. He also gifted her a larkspur flower pin to be able to secure it.

-- Lark has an affinity with animals, and when she's not doing Crow things, she can be found feeding the stray cats. At one point, House de Riva was full of cats because of bad weather. Viago was not happy with her. She petitioned the talons for funds to build an animal shelter.

-- She hordes books, and because of her sticky fingers for literature, she's been banned from the other houses' libraries.

LARKSPUR RODE A TOP OF A LARGE ANTIVAN SHIRE HORSE. It was almost comical to sit upon a horse bred for war—a dark bay in color with four white socks and a wide blaze down the face. A gift from House de Riva. Alfonso, her beloved horse. He was large enough to carry her and her pack. 

She hadn't expected to be leaving Treviso. It was at Viago's insistence that she took a rather odd contract. It involved no murdering some terrible Magister. It hadn't had anything to do with assassination at all. It seemed that the other factions needed assistance, and only she could answer the call. She supposed it made sense; she had led the Veilguard into defeating three elven gods and stopping the world from being flooded with demons. 

There had been conditions in taking the contract, though. Firstly, she wasn't going as a crow of House De Riva. She was going as Larkspur Oakthorn, a private person. So, instead of donning her usual crow armor with the de Riva crest etched upon it. She wore a simple long tunic, buttoned down in the middle with a leather corset to hold it in place. A belt with matching straps to allow her to slip her blades in with their sheaths, a pair of dark trousers, and half-high heeled boots. Around her shoulders was a thick tartan shawl pinned with an ornate larkspur flower pendant, a gift from Varric. A deep ache swelled in her chest every time she looked at it, she missed Varric. He always knew what to say when her thoughts became torrential as they were now. 

Her sapphire hues shifted to the second condition. A small frown began to form into a thin line across her freckled face. On top of a Dellamorte horse sat Illario Dellamorte. She had been surprised when Viago explained that he would be accompanying her on this contract. Odd, she had thought. They would be gone for months. Lark had to wonder if this was Lucanis' doing. Ever since Illario had humiliated himself in front of the other Crow Houses, she imagined that House Dellamorte didn't quite know what to do with him. Lark wasn't sure either, and she couldn't help but suspect that he was being forced to be her babysitter. Her expression hardened a bit at the realization that Viago didn't trust her to return. 

She didn't mind the company, but she wasn't sure how well Illario could adapt to camping outdoors since the eluvians were sealed off. She glanced at him again. 

❝ Illario? ❞ She tried to keep the irritation out of her tone. It wasn't his fault things ended up like this. 

❝ You don't strike me as an outdoorsman. Are you sure you're up for this? There are no taverns or inns for miles. We're going to have to make camp several times before we reach Lavendel.❞ 

If she was being honest, she couldn't picture Illario pitching tents or making a fire. She had a feeling she would be doing most of the work.

IT WAS AN AMBUSH. A torrential barrage of blades and spells, and by Andraste's grace, they had survived. The Venatori had found them, and while Lark wasn't surprised that she was the target of their ire, she had expected them to attack her. She wasn't their quarry. Illario was. The pandemonium within those minutes had been suffocating.  

Lark had acted quickly. Perhaps it was the rage she bore or something much deeper. The flames manifested between her palms and honed into a thin, flickering blade. It struck the Venatori like the bite of a viper. It sundered the heads from shoulders, and the result was being drenched in blood. Lark gave it little thought at the time, instead having grabbed Illario and fleeing. 

She didn't stop until they were miles away. They camped, and now she sat beside Illario with a deep bowl of water that she boiled with her flames. Dipping the cloth into the water, she slowly began her work of cleaning the blood away from his face and body. Her face remained unchanged, stoic and unreadable as she did so. Her coppery brows furrowed slightly as she tried to assess what was Illario's blood and what was Venatori's. Her face was caked in flecks of dried blood, her hair matted with it. It mattered not, she could bathe once she was sure Illario wasn't injured. 

A soft breath escaped her as her jaw set and her lips formed a thin line. 

❝ Are you in pain? ❞ She asked, finally breaking the silence between them. ❝ I am no healer. The best I can do is to burn the wound until we can get you to a proper healer. ❞

I have this silly little headcanon that in order to become a fully fledged Crow, you must pass Viago's tests.

One is that he will just leave you in the middle of the wilderness with just a dagger and a compass ( when he is feeling generous.) And if you can find your way back, then you have what it takes to be a crow.
