I began to think today…communicating a brand should never feel like we’re casting shadows on the wall and telling a story. So why does it so often feel exactly like that for some companies? Also thought of as the vibe or the frequency of the organization…the message will either have dissonance and resonance. The brand seed isn’t found in a name, logo, tagline, or even our content…these are all byproducts. It's deeper and more visceral, it tells us the specific emotions we want to elicit from the customer when they are exposed to our name, logo, tagline and our content.
In simplest terms…the brand seed is the backstory that dictated the initial steps taken during formation and shaped a focus that was dimensionalized and carried through the collective marketing assets as the company developed. If it lacked this, that is where the branding work is. We must unlock and uncover the values we want associated with our company, services, products. Utilizing this when we communicate, converts even the most casual statement into a promotional touchpoint that impacts customer experience. The real branding work isn’t about creating anything, it’s about capturing what is already present, it’s about taking advantage of new opportunities to gain recognition and being more readily identified in the crowded, noisy marketplace.
Even the most accomplished and experienced of my branding professional peers believe a brand is the personality of a company…but it’s not, it’s actually the heartbeat of a company. Creating a sustainable brand and business requires a clear understanding of ourselves and our customers…who we are at our core and what we need to do to evolve, adapt, and prosper.
