“Scared I’d outshine the groom, then” Will aims for levity wincing as it falls flat.

Mike sits in quiet contemplation beside him still avoiding facing him as he gazes out to the trees swaying in the breeze on the outskirts of the property.

“I thought it would be for the best.” He whispers so quietly that Will can barely hear him, “Kinder.”

Will felt the stone that first appeared back in middle school settle itself firmly back in his gut, pressing into the soft walls of his insides.

“Will-“ Mike takes a deep breath, ready to ask a question they’ve both been avoiding for well over a decade, and turns to stare directly into his eyes “Are you in love with me?”

Mike twisted the knob and pushed the door open ignoring Will’s pleading as he investigated the adjoining room. The muted beat of music became deafening as they were hit with the full force of the stereo.

 The female singer joined in an ear-splitting duet with the man dancing freely around the living room. His back to Mike and Will as he shook his hips along to the beat and continued belting out the lyrics, horribly out of tune.

 “If I could turn back time”

 Will tugged on the back of his shirt as Mike continued to stare at the unaware man. He had been convinced he would never see him again. At least not this version of him.

 He’s probably got the stupidest grin; that’s ever graced his face affixed. He enjoyed the performance for a few more moments before deciding they should announce themselves to their unaware host. It’s probably like his duty as a best friend to minimize any humiliation.

 “Hello!” Mike attempted to project his voice above the music ignoring the progressively more violent yanks Will is doing on the back of his shirt, “<b>Hello</b>”,

 He’s not quite certain if he was loud enough or if it was coincidental that the man spun at that exact moment, failing spectacularly to hit a particularly high note in the song.

 Mike spotted the instant he realized he had an audience. The remote he held as a makeshift microphone tumbled to the ground out of his loosened grip. His mouth dropped open in shock at the sight of Mike as a deep red flush crept up his neck in mortification.

 He quickly shook off the shock and dived for the dropped remote to turn off the stereo, his eyes narrowed accusingly at Mike, “What did you do this time?” he said, exasperation evident.

 “Me?” Mike replied, offended, “It’s not my fault!” he rebutted before guilty muttering “Not this time at least.”

 Last time sure! Totally on him! Christmas Carol and all that, he is absolutely going to crush that module when they study it in English that’s for sure.

 The man looked unconvinced at Mike’s denial crossing his arms with one eyebrow quirked as he regarded him judgementally.

 “It’s not!” He reiterated.

 Because it’s not!

 He learned his lesson last time. Whatever this is about? Whatever the reason is they are here. Mike is certain it’s not about him this time.

 Fuck it.

 Mike smirked, “It’s not my fault!” He gestured behind him with his thumb as he stepped aside revealing the cowering boy who had not stopped yanking on his shirt, “It’s his!”

 If he thought the man had looked shocked at seeing Mike again it was nothing to seeing little Will Byers. His eyes immediately bugged out of his head, mouth gaping as he stumbled over nothing.

 “It’s not mine!” Will instinctively denied in outrage before he narrowed his eyes at the now exposed man, “Was that Cher?” he asked with a judgemental twitch of his lip.

 Will tugged again at the back of Mike’s shirt to get his attention, as the man stared at him disbelievingly. He whispered out of the corner of his mouth toward Mike, “Who’s that?” he asked as he examined the stranger in turn.

 Mike beamed at the two of them, his eyes twinkling in delight at the situation, “William Byers” he started somberly, “Allow me to introduce you too, drum roll, please… Your future” He gestured theatrically at the dumb-struck man before them.

 Of all the reactions Mike expected to that announcement, it wasn’t for Will to immediately give him the bitchiest expression he had ever seen as he crossed his arms, “Don’t be ridiculous.” He rolled his eyes, contemptuously.

“No, seriously” Mike assured him, “He’s you! In about, ten years, was it?” he asked the older Will.

 “No way!” Will shook his head in denial, “He was listening to Cher for goodness’ sake” He pleaded to Mike, who didn’t understand why that was such a serious transgression, “It’s pop Mike, pop!”
