In anticipation for tonight's grand opening of The Bad Kitty Milonga at Dardo Galletto Studios, here is a little "Gato" tango by Edgardo Donato to get you in the mood!
The love of cats pervades even tango songs. This titular music piece is a tango song with humor. It tells the story of three cats during feeding time and the antics they get into.

One of the most beautiful things about Argentine Tango is the the embrace. Sometimes it's easy to forgot about when you are practicing news steps of focusing on technique... but to see some of the great masters of Argentine tango like "Finito" Ramon Rivera, Gerardo Portalea, Pedro Monteleone, and Miguel Balmaceda, it's the magic of their embrace to leaves chills down the spine.

Tango, with its tight embrace and insistent drive, may seem to be about only one thing: sex. Roughly speaking, the message is “Now we’ll dance together, then we’ll have sex, then I’ll stab you with my knife.” This noir romanticism is responsible for much of the popularity of tango, but it’s also the source of a lot of the vulgarity of tango shows. The elimination of that vulgarity is the reason that Gabriel Misse’s visits to New York in recent years have been a cause of joy.

There are students who come directly to learn how to do the steps but you can not.
What are the secrets of tango? El Gallego Manolo, a milonguero who learned from some of the older dancers that connects his style and understanding to the beginning of the 20th Century, gives one small hint of what Argentine Tango is... Though we can't always be in Buenos Aires encountering these milongueros and milongueras, we are lucky today to have access to videos and clips of their thoughts and ideas... and in many languages!
A summary in English and another reason to learn Spanish!
00.01: "There are students who come directly to learn how to do the steps but you can not. One can not teach a kid to how to ride a bike before learning how to walk. The kid first has to crawl than learn how to walk and than learn how to ride a bicycle. Tango is the same, first you have to walk, you have to listen to the music and that's is when things will start to sprout ... If you have something inside you, right?. Because I think Tango has to go through the head first and inevitably before the foot Tango has to go through the heart." 00.28: "And there are people who dance without listening to the music. If by magic you change the music and put rock 'n' roll they would just be dancing the same way to it. But I tell you, I insist, there are many kids who walk very well, that handle time." 00.47: "If you read a book, and do not respect the periods and the commas you would not know or understand what you really read. Tango is the same. You have to respect the periods and commas, you must learn to manage the silences. That is to manage time ... That is not ... not easy.
But it can be achieved."

Quote
The most important thing in this class is not how many steps you learn but that, when you do each step, you’re celebrating the life of the milonguero who made the step. If you do it without life, you’re destroying the work of 60 years.” -Gabriel Misse, March 2013
The distinguished dance writer Mindy Aloff, author of Ballet Anecdotes and Hippo in a Tutu observed Gabriel Misse and Analia Centurion while they were teaching at Dardo Galletto Studios in March 2013. Read her entire post here.
