Princess Tutu patch notes

gave mytho his own agency in s2 - he discusses his backstory & how he feels

introduced the concept of story-spinning earlier in s2

more (if still vague and mysterious) development of Prinz und Rabe, giving an overall plot structure to the story

rue character development culminates in seeing mytho as his own person, and sacrificing herself without the expectation of being loved in return - something that explicitly has never happened before

freya & hermia cut. now replaced with an episode later on in s2 where raven mytho tries his whole "love only me" spiel on fakir; all new content fills out another episode, completing the symmetry of the s1 and s2

the land from the story established as non-existent. fakir can send mytho and rue back but they would, in essence, cease to exist; clarifies themes of facing reality and give weight to duck remaining a duck

fakir now questions if ratsel is real

mytho now tells fakir and rue off for abusing him in ep 26, and reflects on his homeland having never existed

ENDING CUTSCENE CHANGE - all 4 main characters remain in the real world after the series

can you *please* elaborate on "fakir now questions if ratsel is real" in the patch notes post 👀

OKAY! SO.

The thing abt princess tutu - and one of the ways it differs from utena - are its themes of existentialism and free will. these aren't played up a *ton* - we aren't quoting Nietzsche here - but still, the existence of life outside the town is downplayed. within a story, characters only need to exist for as long as they're plot relevant; not so in the real world.

ratsel was never shown or mentioned before her episode, and isn't brought up again after. even though she comes from "outside," neither she or her sweetheart are altered into an animal to suit the Story, unlike the eleki troupe and the rhino.

in turn: does she actually exist at all? or does she just exist to serve the whims of the story?

can you imagine having a sister figure, who you thought you loved your whole life? that your father figure knows well? can you imagine having to face the fact that she never existed before that moment, and will never exist again after? what if you don't actually exist in reality either, and you'll just disappear once you enter the real world? can you imagine having to find a way to face reality in the face of those odds?

(can you image holding on to hope against hope once you're free of your puppetmaster, hunting down names and faces for a crumb of proof she existed at all, that the love you felt was real and meant something?)

Ratsel not being real has such insane reprecussions, whether or not it's confirmed. even just making fakir *question* it gives him an incredibly compelling character arc!

The first time Fakir calls Duck by her name is in episode 5. Mytho tries to tell Fakir Duck's name (he'd been calling her "that girl") and Fakir interrupts him. Rude!

A little later in the episode Fakir calls Duck by name! Yay!!

...and then he never uses her name again. UNTIL EPISODE 17!! He calls her Tutu when she's Tutu, "that girl," or just "her." Case in point: episode 15.

He and Rue are talking about Mytho. Duck has not been mentioned once in this conversation and Fakir chooses to bring her up without referring to her by name; just "her" again. Thankfully Rue knows who he's talking about.

The first time Fakir uses Duck's actual name past episode 5 is in episode 17 and then he's just echoing Uzura.

By episode 18 Fakir seems to have remembered Duck's name. He calls out for her, for the first time not just echoing a name someone else told him (there's another example of this earlier in the episode.)

From here on out he consistently refers to her by name. Though he has a bit of a relapse in episode 23:

Once again he brings up Duck as "her" without having referred to her by name previously in the scene.
