He just needed an excuse to be here. Though, that part was a genuine accident. His arms were behind his back which was strange in itself, he normally had them crossed to avoid showing vulnerability. "I should have one around here somewhere. Just give me one quick moment" she quickly walks over to the cabinets and starts searching through them

"Things have been alright, I suppose, I had the loveliest date with kaleb the other day. That's been... probably the only person I've seen in a while... I've been asleep for most of the week... luckily no-one has needed my help, huh. What about you?"

She's still smiling as she pulls out the note, reading and rereading it as her smile never once dissipates. The words blur on the page as she feels tears building in her eyes.

If she imagines more vividly, she'd think that the note was from someone else, someone who has more means to apologise than the man in front of her does.

"Jim... this is lovely... I... I really don't know what to say... thank you... I really appreciate it."

"What's the occasion?" She thinks for a moment, her mind running in circles trying to guess before she realises

"Christmas! It's Christmas! Gosh, how could I forget?!" She laughs, opening the envelope carefully and taking out the bookmark, staring at it with wide eyes

"This is... gosh, this is lovely, Jim. Thank you so much!"

I wonder what my family is doing this year? Putting up the tree, pinning tinsel decorations to the ceiling, the warm lights flooding the small apartment...

I wonder if they still put out my stocking, just for the small hope that I'll get back safely, maybe they threw it away all together.

I wonder if I will get back for next year, or if I'll die before seeing the family, sitting around the table, quiet hymns filling the air. The sound of laughter and arguments and getting too tipsy.

I wonder if they even remember my place there at all.

Maybe it's too late for me. Too late for them not to consider me in anything but the past. Just a picture on the mantle. The concept of too many holidays missed.
