I have this topic now. We all know that Rukia is a most selfless and sacrificing person, bless her pure heart. But what do you think of Ichigo? I had once a discussion with my friend, and she said that even though he's a protector by nature, he's often a selfish man with his choices when Rukia is involved. (See. Going to HM to take revenge of Grimm). Where Rukia is treating everyone equally, ichigo's priorities always shift when she's in danger. (See. Almost abandoning Orihihi's rescue mission)

That's why this "amazing"canon pairing doesn't work! That's why the final is garbage, because even though Ichi loves his friends, he doesn't always puts them at first place pedestal. Lol he even didn't look once at Chad and Ori after he returned his power at FB arc.

Yes, I believe that Ichigo is a more selfish person than Rukia. I mentioned in an earlier post that Rukia changed him. Ichigo initially says that he's not a good enough person to run around and save people - but he quickly changes his mind under Rukia's influence. By the time he and Ishida are facing off against the hollows that Ishida summoned with his bait (chapters 45-50/episode 14 in the anime), Ichigo instead tells Ishida that he doesn't just want to protect the people he can hold in his arms. He does become less selfish/less focused on just the people he knows.

But, Ichigo still makes specific choices when it comes to Rukia, and prioritizes her above his friends and allies, even when she doesn't want him to do that.

He immediately resolves to save Rukia when she is taken back to Soul Society. Ichigo is ready to bust into Soul Society the second Urahara says it's possible, where a few panels ago Urahara deduced that Ichigo was upset that he'd been rescued.

He readily risks the lives of Chad, Orihime, Uryuu, Hanatarou, Ganju, and Yoruichi to save her. Of course Ichigo cares about whether they get hurt or die, but he is focused on Rukia.

Ichigo also sees himself as expendable if Rukia lives. He takes on grave injuries and screams at his own body to move, to keep going, because he needs to save her. He is seriously pissed off when Yoruichi saves him from Byakuya (ch 118-20/ep 47). When Yoruichi tells him that she could only grab one person, Ichigo is angry that she saved him instead of Rukia. He doesn't calm down until she explains herself: that he is the only person who will stand a chance against Byakuya, once he gets stronger (achieves bankai) in 3 days.

(I want to point out that he also worries about Hanatarou and Ganju ending up dead, he does care whether his allies die - but Rukia is his first thought.)

Ichigo could choose to try and run away from Byakuya, once he's retrieved Rukia - but he doesn't. He fights Byakuya with the specific intention not of getting revenge on the man for hurting him, but for hurting Rukia. And he tells Byakuya that he's being a terrible brother, that he's going to make Byakuya apologize to Rukia, that the power in his [Ichigo's] hand was gained for Rukia's sake.

Regarding Hueco Mundo, I do think that Ichigo went to Hueco Mundo with the intention of rescuing Orihime. He does say right on the page that he'll go rescue her himself. It's not "I swore on my soul" or "I'll pass through even 100 million blades" but I don't want to diminish his intent.

However, he prioritized Rukia instead on multiple occasions:

He didn't want to split up when the rescue group reached the five pathways in Las Noches (I have strong opinions about this scene's nonsense. Among other things, "Let's split up, gang!" wasn't even a great idea in Scooby-Doo, and that was when the monsters were actually just humans in costume using dry ice and stage lights to seem scary!)

He tried to avoid the fight with Ulquiorra after feeling Rukia's reiatsu drop due to her fight with Aaroniero. This is after he realized that Chad was in danger, and decided that he had to trust that his friend would be okay.

Even when he decided to fight Ulquiorra, Ichigo treated the fight as something to dispense with quickly, because he needed to get to Rukia.

He told Grimmjow that he'd come to Hueco Mundo to fight him and yes, took the opportunity to get revenge on him for hurting Rukia.

As soon as he could, he left Uryuu and Orihime, went to find Rukia, immediately tried to rescue her from Yammy, called the fight "pointless" and said he'd end it and then they'd go home.

There's more later on, even in the FB arc where Rukia's absence looms large even 17 months after they parted in 423, but this has already gotten rather long, so I'll leave off here.

In short: Yes, Ichigo is more selfish than Rukia and even after he expands who he wants to protect, he is shown prioritizing her frequently.
