you are 16. you are talking with a gay man in his 50s or 60s, a friend, huge and gentle with a scarf and short fluffy curls of gray hair, who has directed you in two plays staged in your mid-size artsy town. (he has not yet asked you to be in his production of The Laramie Project which will change your life. this conversation will also change your life.)

he is talking about theatre. he is talking about theatre when he was younger. he says, "of course, it was AIDS then." in the pause, you ask him. clumsy and quiet and 16 and "straight," you ask him. what was it like.

he takes a moment in which his face is not like a person's face. "there was a time," he says, "i'm not sure how long, years. when i went to a funeral every weekend." he tells you about two funerals in a day, and choosing between friends when you couldn't make it to both. he does not look at you, he looks at them. his wet grey gaze is so clear that you start to see ghosts. it will be years before you understand why it feels like your grief too. why the ghosts call you family.

Sat in on a Baptist Sunday Worship today because a friend was getting baptized.

I'm an atheist but I grew up going to church so there was some familiarity. The prayers, the hymns, it was kind of nice.

Then the sermon began and I shit you not the Pastor stood up and made a biblical argument for giving money to the church. Basically saying good Christians are charitable, but that charity is owed to the church. Plus it'll get you in good with heaven 😉. And if you don't give us Physical Money you are a "SPIRITUAL FREELOADER" (His exact words). My guy had textual support for his argument and everything.

I tried and probably failed so hard to keep a straight face. And my trans atheist social anarchist ass was front and center, so I could get a good picture of my friend getting dunked for Jesus. The pastor could see every twitch and look of horror on my face.

Anyways every time the lure of community draws me in I get slapped in the face with something that reminds me why I could never in good faith participate in organized religion.

Re-listening to the Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One, and I’m also learning to watercolor—

I had to paint Naram’s eye seeing Eursulon under the sea. It was so beautiful. This doesn’t live up to the moment, but I did paint it.

“…suddenly shifts, drowned out by every one of Naram’s white and pupiless eyes, suddenly shifting into iridescent indigo, red, orange, yellow, green… as the iridescent landscape of light shifts over the sea in incandescent rage…”

I just pictured tiny Bear at the bottom of the sea and suddenly an eye is there and the water *shifts*.
