Things about Norway
Here is a list of interesting and sometimes perplexing things about Norway and Norwegian culture. I like lists like this, so I hope you do too.
1. They have reclining seats in movie theatres. This is awesome.
2. They have 0 stopsigns! I have not seen a single one. You would think this would make it dangerous for pedestrians, but rather they have cross walks where the pedestrian always has the right of way and cars must stop for them. You never have to wait to cross the street! No more being late for school because of a stupid red light.
3. There is a speech pattern where Norwegians inhale and say 'ja’, which means Yes and sounds like Yeah (really quickly) at the same time. At first I thought it was like a hiccup, but EVERYONE does it!
4. The roads are a little bit more aggressive than the ones in Canada, but everyone is much less bitter towards other drivers.
5. The calendars have numbered weeks on them, and people refer to the week number when planning far in advance, and in school assingments. So this week is week 35. Such a good system!
6. No water fountains at school. Instead everyone brings a plastic bottle and their are water bottle refilling station things.
7. Only stores under 100m^2 are allowed to be open on sunday, which means that most local stores can be open, but few chains can be.
8. On saturday, most stores close at 2 or 3 pm. Its opposite of Canada! Its the weekend, who wants to work anway?
9. The official Norwegian flag isnt allowed to fly at night, so there are lots of long, triangular, stripped flags in red, white and blue. Will add more later, its hard to think of them!
