2024 NSC Mural - James Baldwin
Mural Links to Call + Application
CALL OVERVIEW
The Art Council at North Seattle College is seeking artists to design a mural that honors the legacy of writer and activist James Baldwin. Designs should center his work and activism, especially as it relates to educational and social justice. The mural will be placed on a wall inside our newly renovated library. It will be painted on plywood and transferred to the wall by students enrolled in ART 204: Mural Art at North Seattle College in the Spring of 2024.To ensure successful implementation of the design we ask that it keep large areas of text, detailed figures, and photorealism to a minimum.
This call will happen in two rounds. For Round One we are not asking for a specific design proposal but looking to identify artists that would like to be considered for the design phase process. From the initial pool of artists that express interest, 2-3 will move onto Round Two and will be invited to submit a design to scale created specifically for our campus location. We will choose one artist to move on to the Final Round to finalize the design.
APPLICATION PROCESS SUMMARY
Round One
Interested artists should submit the online applicationform which asks for 6 images of past work, a statement of interest, work sample image description list, a CV or list of prior art-related activities, and 1-2 references.
Round Two
If chosen from Round One, the artist will be asked to submit a design to-scale, created specifically for our campus location. The 2-3 artists who are asked to submit a design will be compensated $500 for their time.
Final Round
From there, one artist will be chosen and asked to fully finalize, grid, color number and prepare the design to be translated, as well ascommit to 2-3 speaking engagements with the campus. An additional $4000 will be awarded to the artist chosen for the final design.
ELIGIBILITY
Artists who identify as Black and Queer are especially encouraged to apply and will be given the greatest consideration. All artists who identify with the work and spirit of James Baldwin and are allies in the work of furthering educational justice for our BIPOC and LGBTQIA students are encouraged to apply.
Artists should have demonstrated experience in exhibitions and/or public art.
Emerging, mid-career, and established artists are welcome to apply.
Prior mural experience is not required.

2024 NSC MURAL LOCATION
We are thrilled to be able to offer another mural design opportunity on our campus.
Our mural program is now on its 6th iteration and we are thrilled to be working in a brand new renovated space for this year's mural, centered on the life and legacy of James Baldwin.
This year, the mural will be placed in an interior location, the newly (January 2024) renovated library at North Seattle College. Due to the height and length of the wall, students will first paint the mural on plywood, and then attach to the upper wall.
The mural dimensions are approximately 8 x 60 feet. The mural should take the entire space into account.

The wall for the 2023 mural design has been identified! Artists should focus on the main flat wall, facing EAST. There is a door that can be incorporated into the design or left separate from the design. There is a sprinkler/Fire hose hook up that should be left unpainted. Design should not reach above where students can comfortably paint on ground level or with minimal ladder work. Design should not require scaffolding or scissor lifts.
Design may extend to South-facing corrugated wall, but design should be less intricate in this section as there are a few barriers (corrugated surface, plants, no easy place to place ladders). Design may also incorporate short planter wall that extends on east side to the South.
Keep in mind that students new to mural painting will be painting this design. We take the utmost care with translating the design just as the artist envisions, and the design should allow for large, flat areas of paint, forgiving shapes, and a level of detail appropriate for a beginner mural class.

Completed 2021 NSC Mural
The NSC Art Council reviewed the mural call submissions, and Paige Pettibon's design has been chosen for the 2021 campus mural. The mural call sought an Indigenous Artist to create a design that would center our Indigenous student and staff population. Pettibon is an artist based in Tacoma, and her studio practice highlights the perspectives of Indigenous folks and their relations. In step with the mural call, her goal for the mural was to create a design that creates a sense of pride and respect for the land we occupy. Pettibon is black, white, and Salish, from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Pettibon's design will be painted by students in ART 204 Mural Art, led by instructor Kelda Martensen.

2016 MURAL CALL
The mural will wrap around a corner, covering 2 walls: one 23 feet in length, the other 18 feet in length. Your proposed design should address all 41 feet in length, and at least 8 feet in height, though your mural need not be a rectangle nor have straight borders, and may dip above and below the 8 foot mark. Please note that we are considering adding great height to the mural in consecutive years, so your mural design should be fluid/organic/abstract enough to allow for additional imagery. You are encouraged to address the potential expansion in your design as well, though your design should not depend on it, and should be successful even without the expansion.
