I think part of why I can’t get into any Tolkien stuff outside of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is because I immediately lose interest once the gay little hobbits stop being center-stage. “The main hero is CeleFinElfidor the Bold, an immortal warrior who slew three thousand balrogs with a song” makes me go to sleep. but “his name was Blorbo Boffin and his neighbors said he was a queer creature who liked to eat strawberries” is Intriguing. What I keep hearing from TikTok users is that it's such a great platform for organizing and that scares me because it's not. By definition, an algorithm-based platform that shows you a personalized feed is terrible for organizing because you are not all seeing the same things. You have no common information base and it's just practically difficult to organize when your feed is algorithmic and personalized!!! I think the shift toward algorithms and away from chronological feeds is probably a major reason why social media hasn't played a big role in political organizing the way it was expected to after the Arab Spring.
