is it about productivity?
yes.. but the connection it is making is through the act of restoration. when one is mentally fatigued then we start making errors and have a hard time concentrating, get irritable, etc. we run out of mental juice. we dry up in a way and get rusty.. so the restoration part of the thesis is basically directly responding to that need by providing a place that is the optimal environment for speedy restoration
Amid the Chaos
. the number one rule of the game is lower psychological intensity of stimulation. so absence of threat, absence of feedback, effortless attention, and natural elements which are proven to reverse fatigue more than anything else.. that's why I'm trying to make this outdoor public space that works year-round, not just in nice weather - because this is a year-round issue. (long way of answering that question) Yes, when we have a restored mind we are more productive, creative, and efficient - goal of thesis is to create the optimal space for that.
Thesis is about restoration by figuring outdoor comfort strategies shape the architecture to provide a year round place designed explicitly for cognitive restoration in dense urban areas. You are right, parks and outdoor spaces in nice weather do the job of restoration to a degree. I on the other hand believe we must make these year round. And make it with a very serious intent of restoration. It us that important. Problem Solution- restoration Where do we find them? Parks What I am I'm not inventing restoration I'm highlighting it Framing it So that it is stronger Guide to creating a year-round restorative outdoor public space. Why outdoor? Why year round? How to do it? Tools: Strategies: Experience. There are 2 modes of attention, attention that is directed and you gotta work hard to inhibit distractions, and involuntary/spontaneous or what they are calling fascination. Directed attention is a scarce resource so after so much you just can't pay close attention anymore and you burn out.. That's when the other type of attention comes in. The potential for applications of that phenomenon they are saying are promising and so far untested. But when you watch your shows or do something you are naturally interested in, so interested that it takes little effort to stay tuned to it, it permits you to rest the inhibitory mechanism on which directed attention depends, and this allows for restoration of the capacity to direct attention. They also talk specifically of natural elements and solitude and why that is more of a universal human restorative thing. Then we also have our own individual ones.. Our little hobbies and acts that make us happy act as restorative moments Is a line that wanders through the park A line with breaks Is a tool for soaking up concentrated nature and recovering from mental fatigue while still working Karen van lengen Soundscape arch Fascinating nose Anthony tounsen Wireless environments Smart cities The real social life of wireless spaces Findings chart.
