hello there- we wanted to ask if you could detail your process of making icons? specifically the circular backgrounds, as someone we met online was wondering- thank you even if not!

Hey hey! Sorry this took so long, but I've really had not motivation to make icons for the past basically year. But tonight a friend got me to make some Kirby-related icons (will post later) and I remembered this, so let's make an icon!

The Layout

So, I've had this layout together since basically the beginning. I based it off the Puyo Fever DS icons and the first set was Amitie, so the character layers are still labeled as Amitie. FG means foreground and BG means background.

The 'Foreground Circle' layer is hollow, just being the ring around the middle circle.

2. Characters

The next thing is getting your character image. Just go to Google and find a transparent PNG of who or what you want an icon of. In this case, I chose Moon/Selene from Pokemon Sun/Moon (note to self: make a Pokemon Sun/Moon set later).

Paste your character into the Character Foreground layer, size it to how you want (I like them popping out of the circle a little!), and anchor it in. Then copy the layer and paste it in the Character Background layer.

Go back to the Character Foreground and erase the parts you want not popping out.

Then go to the Character Background and erase the rest!

3. Background

So, for my Puyo icons I usually just pull the colors directly from the original icons but sometimes I like to get silly and have a more intricate background. Here, I took the map of Alola and drop it into the BG circle.

Then just erase the parts popping outside of the circle!

4. Circle Color

This is the last step (or the second; I really just do these steps in any order and this is how I did it this time around)! Pick a color and use the paint bucket tool on the Foreground Circle layer. Usually, I pull and slightly adjust a color from the character (usually their main color), but this time around I picked the green from Rowlet's tie, since Moon's design really goes well with that mon.

Then, bam! We're done!

One last note is that I like to make the actual image larger than it needs to be so websites don't crop away the parts that pop out when they use circle icons. This lets me allow more stuff to pop out, but it's important to not get carried away and end up with stuff popping too far out of the image.
