Week 11 - Final Manipulations
Before -
After-
Here I cropped the image to be tighter, compared to the previous one, feeling closer and less empty spaces surrounding the main components.
Before -
After -
I applied a gradient in the background of the image, I felt like that really gave the image the push it needed to be eerier in feeling.
Before -
After -
I changed the overall composition for the last image because the previous one felt too random. This one felt more in synch with my other images in the series.

Week 11 - In Class Feedback
I had gotten back a lot of feedback from this class so generally to sum it up, everyone had said that they liked the concept I had of liminal spaces and that it was clearly displayed through my image series. Moving forward in my reflective statement I should add more research such as the artist that had inspired me, and the style of manipulation I had gone with (in further detail).
I also got manipulation feedback from David to further push my imagery, which I plan to change.

Week 10 - Draft Manipulation
I am already very happy with the composition for this image, I had just gotten some feedback from David, to remove the overhead light and make the water more blue because it currently looked like a pathway.
Here I colour-graded the entire image and made the water and grass more saturated. I also removed the light overhead and the image looks better now.

Week 10 - Draft Manipulation
This is my new manipulation. I am still unsure about the idea for this one, so after some feedback, I can get a stronger idea. With this image, I had removed the inside of this warehouse I had seen. I then placed images of the forest/nature I had taken last week and the creek water. I wanted the pillars to be mixed into nature. I was happy with the composition for this just needed to colour grade and turn the brightness lower.
Here is after colour grading the entire image as well as changing the brightness in different sections. I like how the image seems more cohesive now.

Week 10 - Draft Manipulation
This was the first draft manipulation of this scene. This image was more like a placeholder for the theme I wanted to pursue within my series. I wanted to change the colour and the composition of the trees. I also don't like how the river continues, it just doesn't flow properly
This is the original image without the curve that darkens the image.
I experimented with layering the grass and moving it slightly off so it appears hazy and confuses what the brain sees. I did not go forward with this idea because I felt it would've cluttered the image.
Here I removed the sea/lake entirely, felt like it made the image better. I also increased the saturation for the grass and water, making it pop more with colour. I placed the rocks back into the image, deciding which rocks would make the foreground or background.
This is the final image so far, I placed the trees back in and again decided which would be in the foreground and background. I made the overall image dark, except for the stream. I lightened the colour of the stream as well as making it more blue. I did this because beforehand the water looked more like a pathway.

Week 10 Research - Artists
Gregory Crewdson - Photographer
Gregory Crewdson is an american photographer, that is interested in transitional spaces where someone can transport themselves to another world that is still and perfect. In other words he is interested in liminal spaces as well which is what drew me to his bodies of work. The composition of his works we can not see an end, rather the image seems to keep on going. The colours in the image seem very natural; not very vivid but just enough. Within his works, you can see that there is a handful of people as well. In my own works, I want to have the 'endless' composition.
Edward Hopper - Painter
Edward Hopper was an oil painter that had a fascination for dramatic lighting as can be seen within his paintings. What I had liked about his paintings was that overall composition felt slightly eerie. If we were to remove the people from this piece, the location and the nature of no real 'end' they would look like liminal spaces. The colours in the works are also bright and saturated but not overwhelming much, which I want to apply to my works.

Week 10 - In Class
Within class today we were put into pairs to give each other feedback on our blogs so far. My partner was Joel and this is the feedback he gave me for my blog overall. He said that overall my blog is great however I should do more research about my theme and how I can incorporate it into my work. As well as include more reflective comments on my work not just the process of the image.

Week 9 - Draft Manipulations
Here are my three manipulations so far. My favourite out of the series is the carpark, it is the best composed compared to the other two images. The first manipulation also doesn't suit and match with the other two manipulations so for now that is a placeholder. The endless forest manipulation, Like the idea I was going with however I did not execute it properly so for now it is a placeholder till I perfect it.

Week 9 - Contact Sheet
I had taken pictures within a carpark that was kind of empty, the other side of the parking area had cars. I used my tripod during all these photoshoots so that I could lower the shutter speed. I then went to this little creek and took pictures of trees in that area and walked further to see that there was a beach and took a picture of the water winding out to the open sea.

Week 9 - Planning Photoshoot
Location - Empty carparks, Places of nature; grass, trees, etc, Bodies of water; maybe a stream that has a directional path
Lighting - It would have to be natural light since we will be working outside
Post Production - Merging all the images together in a balancing composition that feels deprived of human essence, changing the saturation of the colours, making the overall image darker but the elements brighter

Week 9 Research - Artists
James Casebere
This photographer's work interested me. David had given my group one of his works and that was where I had caught an interest. James Casebere's prints speak about climate change and the environmental damage that has happened. He creates these bodies of work by creating intricate models, photographing them in "artificial water" (don't know what that means) and in post-production increasing the colour saturation.
What I like about his works is that even though his theme is more towards the environment, they give the same sort of aesthetics of liminal spaces; feeling eerie and stuck. I want my images to create a similar feeling to what I get from Casebere's.
In future photoshoots, I want to experiment with Casebere's method and use sculpted models - fully staging the scene.

Week 9 Research - Theme
CONCEPT : Liminal spaces
CONTEXT : The feeling of being stuck, alone and the fear that accompanies it.
Liminal spaces are known as transformative or transitional spaces, where you can be stuck in a place between space and time. This space can be physical or mental. The embodiment of this space can either feel nostalgic or create a strong sense of fear.
I always had a fascination for odd and eerie things that feel almost uncomfortable, which caused me to always be interested in liminal spaces. However as I learn more about this topic on a psychological level, I begin to understand that most often or not I feel like I am trapped within a liminal space. The feeling of being trapped in a space that is deprived of time and human essence is both freeing and terrifying. I want to portray this feeling within my series of photographs showcasing what I believe is my own personal prison.
I have featured bodies of water within my work; there is a saying that water holds memories even throughout time. The water symbolizes memories that occupy me and the viewer through these spaces, the temperament of the water would affect the sort of memories they are.
I want to introduce nature within the works since It would serve interesting compositions. nature would offer a sense of comfort in these strange places that seem to have no time.

Week 9 - In Class
Within class today we received feedback on our work so far and a callsheet activity for this particular picture.
The feedback I had received was that my photos were like other liminal space photography and that I should make it more my own; more personal. as well as find a stronger meaning/reasoning for water within my images.

Week 8 Research - Liminal Spaces
Liminal spaces are known as transitional or transformative spaces that are often associated with a neglected aesthetic that can seem disconnected from reality. These spaces act as a waiting room from one point in time and space to another.
Moving forward with this new assignment, I want to further explore liminal space photography. At the end of the last assignment I had shown an interest pursuing in this direction so I want to further explore this theme as it interests me.
I found this text about Liminal Space Photography. The text talks about the eerieness of places that are stripped, and deprived of any human presence. Places such as shopping malls, classrooms, parking lots and even offices; places that can be considered as uninteresting and seen every day, look completely different with lack of humans.
With liminal space photography, it can evoke the feeling of nostalgia, with the images being of poor quality and slightly blurry and moody lighting. Or they can evoke a sense of fear as with these common places stripped bared and beak makes one think that there is something unforgiving lurking around the corner.
With my own work, I want to invoke the feeling of unsettledness that borders on the fence of nostalgia - like a place you might've once seen in passing or in a dream.

Week 8 - Draft Testing Manipulations
This is my first manipulation. In this image, I combined the photos of the water and the image of the carpark. I turned the transparency of the water down so that you could see through the water. I also changed the water images to be luminous so that the colours would better suit the overall image.
This is my second manipulation, where much like the first manipulation I placed another body of water over the ground. This one is quite simple but it is just a test.
This is my third manipulation. Same as the other two, playing around with different compositions and images to see if they create different visual effects.
The reason behind editing waters into each location is that when I search up liminal spaces, often I see images of abounded areas, that also have shallow/deep transparent-looking waters. The idea of water being in a place that should not have water also unsettles me.

Week 8 - 5 Best Images
These are my 5 best photos so far, the first two are of bodies of water. The texture of the water as well as the direction of the ripples had interested me. The image of the entrance of the ramen shop, I also liked a lot, after post-production I can see it becoming more eerie. The fourth image I like because of the vertical lines, it can be a good base for manipulation. The last image is of the parking lot, this image best suits the sort of visual aesthetic I want to go for. Moving forward I will take more photos from the interior of buildings.

Week 8 - Context Sheet
My photoshoot for week 8, involved taking images of large bodies of water and any buildings that had interested me. I had taken several photos of the ocean, trying to capture all the ripples in different directions. I had wondered around and found visually interesting places such as this hidden ramen shop and took a photo of the entrance.
