did some printing yesterday, josh showed us how to wash out a screen. Then i realised that the scale of my prints were too big, slight setback but i aim to set up a new screen today with scale to fit the chemigrams.

presentation of work
this has been something i have left undecided, but stuart gave me a great idea in my feedback. i feel that if i can, this is the best way to present the work. the plan is to have 7 printed, unprocessed chemigrams on the wall. Covered with a black sheet of some kind. So that when it is time to present, the curtains come down and the audience watches as the works grow and dissolve. The reason i believe this to be the best way, (if i can get it done) is because the temporality of the work, the fact the audience won’t be able to see it the same as the second before. aligns with my ideas of mortality, the fleetingness and beauty of life etc. and then all that will be left is the dissolved, blander coloured works.

the refined idea
title: goldin days or gold-inbetween days
the expanded field, what does this mean for an artwork. for me it means pushing into different mediums and expanding the works dimensionality. at first i thought i’d do an installation about the process of my first work this year. However since the original work was not finished in my eyes i want to expand upon my practice instead. improving it and through purposeful choice in composition, editing, colour choice, medium and material, i will resolve my piece. The work, a series of seven experimental photographs using techniques from various mediums. To sum up the practice, i begin by taking photographs then digitally altering them through level adjustments, layering techniques and collage essentially. From here, bitmaps of digital works are printed out, doused in baby oil (to make translucent) and then applied to a screen for printing. These will be printed on to chemigrams, which will have different materials relevant used as resistance. I want to experiment with printing on processing chemigrams, so that i am able to film the forming and fading of the various colours portrayed, the growth and disintegration of the work. Arrangement of works is undecided but will either be presented as a compilation of deteriorating loops in a video format, or a compilation of several variants of the different prints. the video format is influenced by william basinski’s ‘the disintegration loops,’ the beauty of its sound and natural deterioration speaks of life and mortality. Taking similar ideas and concepts from my first work this year, the series will aim to depict decision and free will, mortality and the innate beauty of human experience. There are many different elements that will work towards supporting these ideas. The title, with connotations of ‘golden days’ whilst also reffering to nan goldin; a photographer from 70s - 80s who’s slice of life practice showed both times of ecstasy and pain. It also alludes to the cure’s ‘inbetween days’ a song about a man cheating on his lover, loving what he has found but longing for what he had, feeling in between without either (an inbetween day is one not inherently good or bad, but it is missing something). The compositions of the work will aim to create push and pull between the print and its negative space (the exposed chemigram), almost a tension between decisions. The temporality and changing nature of the chemigrams until their plateau to static, blander colours aims to question or at least raise the idea of mortality. The use of distortion, copying, abstract collaging and the changing colours induced will portray an almost psychedelic style. As a whole, i also hope the colouring shows this love for life, an excitement to be alive. I plan to increase my output of work so that i can create a piece that is refined and consistent in both aesthetic and theme.

expanded field
the process
- take photos, use a similar approach to the camera as nan goldin, adopting a ‘slice of life’ practice
- photos taken into photoshop where light will be dramatised and highly contrasted, elements of the photos removed, others duplicated, distortion created through different layering and blending techniques.
- better for photos to have leading lines to the brighter/whiter part of the photo, as this is where chemigram will be exposed.
- images bitmapped at 50 % threshold, then screenprinted onto prepped chemigram. (done in the dark)
- chemigram will be prepped by using print cut outs of the positive space of the image, so that some form of composition can be constructed.
- works will be filed with high quality camera.
- work can either be displayed as a series of video loops, or a multiple prints of different timestamps of each image. or both.

reflection
Although I am happy with the final work, there could be a lot of improvements in my process. Firstly, I failed to load my film camera right, three times in a row which meant 60 + photos went to waste, it also meant that I wasted a lot of time. Obviously this assignment was quite late and although there were complications with my process such as the blank rolls and the strikes which interrupted with when i could come into the dark room, I really needed to put more effort in early on. I did say I was happy with this work, but if i were to take the work any further there would be a couple things i would do. Firstly, I would increase the number of works in the series, probably to 7. What i really wanted to try and accomplish but realised to late was filming the chemigrams process so that i could have looping videos of the chemigrams merged with the photos. I may still try and do this in my own spare time. My main critique of my work is that i need to put out more volume of works, even if it’s just experimentation.

artist statement
‘Goldinbetweens’ is a series of three photographs fused with chemigrams which aimed to depict the beauty of life. The work is influenced by Nan Goldin’s (Hence the allusion to her in the title) approach to her practice and her lifestyle of addiction to drugs, partying, sex etc. But also her mere appreciation for life despite her hardships. The title also refers to the Cure’s Inbetween Days, a song about a man cheating on his lover because he felt old, loving what he has found but also longing for what he had. Finds himself inbetween (def: inbetwen days are not inherently good or bad, but they are missing something) without his original love and wishes he could have both. The final main influence for this piece is William Basinski’s ‘The Disintegration Loops’ which is a great example of a disintegrating copy and a beautiful piece about mortality. My work aims to portray the Inbetweens of an addictive lifestyle, the hopeless optimism that everything will be good. This work refers to copying in. many ways, addiction (continuously copying previous actions), copying artworks (other artists work used to create my own) and the idea of the disintegrating copy ( a copy that keeps on copying itself until it disappears or turns into something new). I made the work by taking photos with a pentax film camera, processing these photos then merging them with chemigrams (made at home with range of relevent materials) in photoshop. The photos allude to looking out and looking at ourselves which makes the work very pensive. Aiming to depict times of reflection, slower points of our day, inbetween. If the moments are reflecting on pain or ecstasy, there is still an appreciation for life and how fleeting it is.
