Elesin Oba (The King’s Horseman) is another excellent film from the stables of Netflix and EbonyLife Studios. The King's Horseman cast my mind back to the colonial era when white men colonised #Africa and 'seared its culture'. Whether the culture was primitive, savage and obnoxious to natural justice is a subject for future debate. The movie ex rayed the burial rites performed in honour of the late Alaafin who must journey to the great beyond with the King Horseman. While the King waited, Elesin Oba wanted to have a fill of a young virgin before exiting the world; unknown to him that was the beginning of his tragic flaw. The power of the Iya Loja was magnified by the movie. She is the woman who can bend traditions to please the King's Horseman even when the course of action is antithetical to the people's culture and tradition. She gave an undue advantage to the King's Horseman and influenced the other women to dance to her tunes. They all practically became "yes women" who couldn't challenge the irrational decision of Iya Loja. It reminds me of Boxer the Horse in George Orwell's Animal farm whose mantra was "Napoleon is always right, I will work harder". Jide Kosoko who was the Kotuma (local police) couldn't fathom how the District Officer and the wife desecrated the costume of the dead. on one occasion when they went to effect the arrest of Elesin Oba he and his fellow Kotumas were terribly beaten by the women under the supervision of Iya Loja. This film is the last film of Biyi Bandele. There are lots of lessons to extrapolate from Elesin Oba. RIP, POPE BENEDICT XVI 🙏 Former pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95, the Vatican announced Saturday, almost a decade after he became the first pontiff to resign in six centuries. "With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement. The German pope emeritus, whose birth name was Joseph Ratzinger, had been living a quiet life in a former convent inside the Vatican grounds since his shock decision to step down in February 2013. His health had been declining for a long time, but the Vatican revealed on Wednesday that his situation had worsened, while his successor Pope Francis called for Catholics worldwide to pray for him. His death brings to an end an unprecedented situation in which two "men in white" — Benedict and Francis — had co-existed within the walls of the tiny city state. While there is no rulebook for former popes, Benedict's funeral is expected to be at the Vatican, presided over by Francis. In 2005 the body of John Paul II, the last pope to die, lay in state before a funeral mass in St Peter's Square attended by one million people, including heads of state. | via Agence France-Presse RELATED: https://bit.ly/3Q2Xms3 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm1NCGetcc4LbsQJjoxsYAGjqIjEQYA58Is2u00/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Nigeria needs to be resurrected from its failed state. The first is the refusal of the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu after the verdict of the court. For me, this is impunity as everyone is equal before the law. Additionally, for sustainable peace and an end to the sit-at-home protest in the South East with its accompanying hostilities, the Federal Government should release. Secondly, the flooding has been devastating and an unfortunate part of this disaster is the Federal Government’s inability to negotiate with the government of Cameroon to manage and decide on the release of the dam. Sadly, we have lost over 600 citizens and still counting to the effects of the flood. .............. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkVmv-3tpavPdLyaDAZ-fwxdmp2dNvzSe6kd9c0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SOLUDO said thus in his press statement; “I visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, (Friday, 13th May, 2022) to felicitate with him and also as part of the wider consultations with critical stakeholders in search of lasting peace and security in the South East. He was in very high spirits and we had quality and frank discussion in a very convivial atmosphere. He expressed sadness over what he described as “sacrilegious killings” of innocent persons, kidnappings and all forms of criminalities, including the brutal enforcement of the senseless “sit at home” perpetuated by sundry groups claiming to be acting for or on behalf of #IPOB. He assured that if the opportunity arises, he will be glad to personally broadcast to his followers to maintain the peace. Together, we shall restore peace, security and prosperity in Anambra and the Southeast. It is well indeed!” CC. Soludo, CFR https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdkbn-wN-qp/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

TERRORISTS TO FG: TALK TO US OR WE’LL KILL ALL OUR CAPTIVES ...Abductors have collected N250m ransom so far …167 passengers still in captivity #Terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train have threatened to kill those in their captivity unless the government meets them. ‘’Government should hasten to meet us before we turn this place into an abattoir because killing these people is nothing to us. It’s not about #money, we can’t do this for money. The government knows what we want,’’ the terrorists said in a viral video released late Wednesday. Recall that the terrorists attacked the #Kaduna-bound train, #killing eight passengers, injuring 41 and kidnapping scores of others. As at Wednesday, the #NigerianRailwayCorporation, NRC, had said 141 passengers taken away were unreachable but the terrorists claimed they had in their custody 168 persons, out of which the acting managing Director of Bank of Agriculture, BOA, Alwan Ali Hassan, was released after alleged payment of N100 million ransom. Speaking further in Hausa, the terrorist said: “We are the people who abducted these people in the train some days back. This one ( BoA MD) you can see him, because of his old age and in this month of #Ramadan, we pitied him and decided to release him to his relations. “The government should know that this is nothing. We just pitied him.’’ In the short video, the terrorists, dressed in #military fatigues, wielding arms, threatened to kill the remaining 167 passengers should government fail to negotiate with them. The NRC had claimed that 398 passengers bought ticket for the trip, while 362 boarded for the journey. Having been granted permission by the terrorists to speak in the video, the BOA boss said: “I would like to let you know that these people (terrorists) pitied me and allowed me to go because of my age. “But I have left many people behind in a condition that they need help. The government should contact the leaders of this group and negotiate their release because they are in a situation that needs immediate help.” (at Nigeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcFLzD8N6av/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Abuja-Kaduna train attack: “The terrorists were small boys, I saw them” – Survivor recounts ordeal, says terrorists were shouting ‘Allahuhakubar’ as they shot sporadically. Survivors of the terrorist attack on an Abuja-Kaduna train on Monday, March 28, have recounted their ordeals. Unknown Gunmen attacked a Kaduna-bound training carrying hundred of passengers on Monday Evening. The train reportedly left Abuja at about 6 P.M and it was attacked between Katari and Rijana. Several people were killed, dozens injured, and others abducted by the terrorists during the attack. Speaking to journalists on her hospital bed, one of the survivors, Maimuna Ibrahim, who was shot on the thigh, said it was a horrible experience. “We saw hell, I prayed and prayed and prayed”, she said. “I went to a workshop in Abuja in the morning and I was on my way back to Kaduna that same day after the workshop. I was shot on the thigh. But the bullet did not touch my bone. The bullet penetrated out of my thigh. Honestly, we suffered seriously, but thank God soldiers came and they really helped us”. She said. Maimuna said she was unable to walk after she was shot and soldiers had to carry her out of the train to a vehicle by the expressway “I was unable to walk, it was the soldiers who carried me on the back to the vehicle that brought us to the hospital. They were able to pass over the cliff, carrying us on their backs! Seriously, they tried because it was not easy climbing the cliff. The terrorists came, were moving about in the train, but they did not come to where I was seated. I was hit by the bullet through the window. They entered SP17. As they were shooting, the police security on the train asked us to lie down on the floor of the train so that the bullet will not get at us. Unfortunately before I could lie down the bullet hit me. “I saw the terrorists from the window. They were many, they were small boys of between the ages of 18 and 20. They appeared like Fulani. They wore turbans. They don’t look like Nigerians. They were shouting Allahakubar. They abducted some people, I saw them forcing people out of the train. They were beating them as they were taking them out of (at Nigeria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbuTW6INrG-/?utm_medium=tumblr

GOD TOLD ME I WAS BORN FOR THIS -Pastor Ghandi Olaoye The new Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, has cleared the air concerning his ascension to the stool of his forefathers, claiming that he accepted the role because God told him to do so. Speaking to members of his Church in a video posted on Facebook, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Jesus House, Washington DC pastor said he did not accept his new role because he had nothing else to do. Hinting that he had planned to retire from the pastoral ministry after 30 years of service, Olaoye said his plan was to travel the world after his retirement. He, however, said he was born into a royal family and entitled to the throne of Ogbomoso. Olaoye, who apologised to his members for “any embarrassment” they might have “felt by what has been happening on social media,” saying he was “genuinely sorry,” explained that he had served at Jesus House for 26 years and the Church had become his family. Olaoye said, “While I was in Nigeria in December, the king of our town died. I’m really close to the family because, like I said, I’m from a royal family. “After the Oyewumis, the Ajagungbades…my family is next. Everybody from Ogbomoso who is familiar with the tradition knows that. And I, of course, knew about that. “But I was not interested in it at all, because I believed that I had gone on a completely different part.” Olaoye said his father also never told him that he could become the Soun of Ogbomoso if he wanted to be, so he never had any intention of becoming the king of the ancient town. He said people close to him and knew his family was the next to ascend the throne began to call him and to ask him to consider taking up the throne. Olaoye said he called his spiritual father, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, to intimate him of the situation. He said when he told Adeboye that he was not interested, the G.O. asked him not to say that but to fast and pray about it. He said he did not take the advice seriously as he did not pray about it. He, however, said that he heard God tell him on January 2, 2022, that becoming the Soun of Ogbomoso was... https://www.instagram.com/p/CbuFZNlNNZJ/?utm_medium=tumblr
