Engine oil: all our advices
If your motor engine is in very good condition, it will not consume too much oil. Despite this, it is advisable to check the level every 2,500 kilometers , and / or before any major trip. Follow the guide.
Check the oil level
Turn the engine off on a flat surface for at least five minutes (best to wait for the car to be downright cold), pull out the dipstick, and then slide it back into place after wiping it off. Take her out again. The trace must be between the "mini" and "maxi" marks . Also be careful when driving: an oil level warning light should warn you by lighting up on your dashboard. If the level is below the minimum, the engine will be poorly lubricated. Consequence: it will wear prematurely and you can very well sink a rod.
If during the check, your oil has a color "mayonnaise" is that there is water in it. Sign of a failed cylinder head gasket. Do not hesitate, in this case, to change it urgently if you do not want an engine break.
Make the level
In case of lack, make the complement with an oil of the same viscosity (15W50 for example) and of the same type (mineral, synthesis ...) than that of the last emptying. In case of compelling need, any petrol or best diesel engine oil will do the job and will be better than "no oil at all".
Be careful if you are above the maximum: a "too full" risk of damaging a gasoline engine seal and destroying a turbo diesel by self-consumption. It is better to immediately remove the excess in this case (before restarting the engine).
Remember that excessive oil consumption may indicate significant engine wear or leakage. Nevertheless, modern mechanics can consume up to one liter every thousand kilometers.
Choosing the right engine oil
Intensive or city use
Given the constraints (heating) and performance required if you drive a lot in town, prefer a semi-synthetic or synthetic oil. It protects your engine more, both cold and hot. Disadvantage: it costs twice as much as a conventional lubricant.
Road use
A good mineral oil will suffice. Especially since today, there are no more bad lubricants. Even if it is less fluid than semi-synthesis or synthesis, it will allow a satisfactory lubrication of your engine under normal conditions of use.
How to decrypt a can of oil?
Two numbers and a "W" make up the main identity of the oil, namely its viscosity index . That is, its ability to flow.
If indicated 15W40, the 15 W corresponds to the viscosity index of the cold oil, symbolized by the W (W inter in English). As for the figure, the smaller it is, the more fluid the oil is at low temperature. Cold oil viscosity indexes of 20W, 15W, 10W, 5W and even 0W are found in northern European countries.
In 15W40 the 40 indicates hot viscosity. The higher its number, the better the oil lubricates at high temperatures. This index may carry W30, W40 or even W50 in North African countries.
In France, there are mainly 10W40 and 15W40 oils well suited to temperate countries. Motorists from northern France will choose the first, those from the south, the second.
