“We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely: All art is useless.” - Oscar Wilde

For a little context, my grandmother fell this weekend and broke her femur. She is currently in the hospital recovering from the surgery to fix it along with a surgery to remove her wedding ring which had embedded itself into her skin. We have been going over to her house to help make it more wheelchair accessible. She is a hoarder so it is far from an easy task.

Research post #14
(Semester 2, part 6)
“Tenn Lars” Göran Lars Albert Persson was a photographer who was alive from 1878 to 1938 who seemed to be interested in “natural magic” (astrology, alchemy and the occult). Despite only being in school for five years, he taught himself to become an electrician, optician, inventor, photographer and scientist. He brought electricity to the small providence of Älvdalen, Sweden. He would also offer to teach the locals all that he knew. He crafted his lenses and cameras himself. He also constructed a telescope in order to study and photograph the moon.
He does an amazing job of depicting his relationship to superstition and myth, but also in relation to the moon and to science. Persson’s work evokes a strong sense of wonder and mystery. Sadly I could not find out much on Tenn Lars and if I wanted to I would either need to look into Älvdalen’s Local Heritage Foundation in Sweden or purchase Maja Daniels book.

(Semester 2, part 5)
“Most of the interpretation of a photograph has to come from the viewer and so the core of what is expressed with an image really lies in that unseen, what we don’t see in shadows or in silent association.”
- Maja Daniels
Maja Daniels is a photographer who uses Scandinavian Myths and folklore in her photography. She worked for three years on a series that uncovers the truths, fictions and folklore of Älvdalen, a a Swedish valley so isolated that they have been able to preserver an ancient language that would be otherwise forgotten, called Elfdalian. In 1668, in Älvdalen a 12-year-old girl by the name of Gertud was accused of walking on water. Hysteria ensued and Gertud, along with 19 other women and one man, were executed for practicing witchcraft. This event was the sparked a chain reaction that lead to the infamous Salem witch trials.
Maja does an amazing job of showcasing the history of Älvdalen in her photography as well as making her photos hold that mystery and wonder that the story’s hold. I find it incredibly interesting that the thing that drew here most to telling ancient stories like these wasn’t just the stories themself but the lost languages they were told in.

“Mythology and folklore transcend that which is visually obvious and unmistakably there”
-Iollann Ó Murchú
Iollann Ó Murchú’s is an Irish photographer who aims to visually represent stories from Irish mythology and folklore. While studying in London he found himself researching the relationship between man and nature when it comes to Irish culture which sparked his interest in his homeland’s classic mythology. He found a never ending feeling of the fantastical that he wanted to use that in his pictures.
He does a great job at capturing Irish folklore in his imagery. He dose an amazing job at capturing emotion as well as movement in his photography to help tell the stories however his art is the type of art that you need to know the stories in order to understand the intended connection he’s trying to make.

Research post #11
(semester 2, part 3)
Anders Ängsvik is a photographer from Sweden. He seeks out locations where nature is disrupted and has taken hundreds of photos of animals both dead and alive. He mostly gravitates towards highways when looking for dead animals to take pictures of.
He does a great job of not shying away from the grotesque realities of how humanities carelessness affects everything around them especially when it comes to the effect our carelessness has on the wildlife. A lot hell take pictures of undisturbed but some he’ll arrange a certain way.

“Am I in the picture? Am I getting in or out of it? I could be a ghost, an animal or a dead body, not just this girl standing on the corner …?”
- Francesca Woodman
Francesca Woodman is an American photographer who is known for her black and white self portrates. She was born into a family of artist. Woodman attended Due to a lackluster response to her photography and a failed relationship she fell into a deep depression. The artist jumped to her death from a loft window on January 19, 1981 in New York, NY. She died at the age of 22. In her very short career she managed to produce over 800 untitled prints.
Woodman does an amazing job at giving her photos a sense of movement and urgency by her use of long shutter spreed and double exposure. Her choice in making her photos in black and white along with a lot of them being in abandoned spaces gives it an unsettling feel to them.

(Semester 2, part 1)
Ransom Riggs is a storyteller who uses multiple different mediums to do so. He mainly uses words and photos and even has a book seres where he combined both. He grew up in Florida but now lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Tahereh Mafi. He started writing stories at a young age on a faulty typewriter and later got a camera for Christmas which sparked his obsession with photograph. In his books, he often includes authentic vintage found photographs that have been lent from professional archives of ten different collectors, one of which being Ransom Riggs himself.
I have been obsessed with this author for years now. His book’s are the one and only book seres that I have gotten my mother to read and the fact that he uses cool and interesting found photos to tell his stories really helped make his books interesting to her. He even translates some of his own photography into his writings like the abandoned building photo. When looking at his photos alone you can still tell he is a talented photographer and has a keen eye for both color and composition.
