I am still playing and there are only 4 accounts on my Tumblr that I receive notifications from, you're one of them. I've kept off from looking at most of them, and I won't look under the cut there. This is the first DAV content since release that I've shared and probably the last until I actually beat the game. I could just read it and save it for later but I actually felt the need to leave a little message. You've made me almost emotional, because those words ring so true to me. DA is something I love to talk about but also cherish as this thing that only exists in the "sanctity of my fun", as you've so beautifully put. Playing video games have always been something very personal to me, that I do alone, and especially with Dragon Age that has been such a big part of my life. I love to create, discover and share content, but deep down it is something very intimate.

I will now dive back in, spend some more time with those new characters and fondly smile at old ones. And drink water, thanks for the reminder.

After 147.9 hours, and only 92% of the codex, I finished Veilguard with 100% and full map exploration. There are a lot of hot takes floating around, so before I say anything, let me share my number one tip. From one superfan to another — spoiler-free.

Play the game for you.

Don’t inoculate yourself against enjoyment with other people’s opinions. Don’t worry about whether you’ll lose morality points for being genuinely touched by something or liking the writing. Don’t go into discussions where the same people parrot the same things over and over again. Don’t let someone else’s voice overwrite your own.

This isn’t about this game specifically; the left eats its young, and capital-D-discourse will bully you into adding asterisks you didn’t know existed. You don’t need to apologize to people you’ve never met for liking something incorrectly. Don’t invite them into the sanctity of your fun. They’re not your mom. In fact, I’m your mom now and I’m unplugging the internet until you finish the game. You’re welcome.

Let yourself be the fan you are, uncringing, and just play the game. Allow yourself to enjoy your time with a story you’ve been waiting 10 years for. You’ll love stuff and not love stuff and you don’t need to preface everything with, “it’s not perfect but…”. Nothing is. Except you, my new kid, I love you and make sure you take breaks and drink more water. Are you drinking enough water? You know you get a headache when you don’t drink enough water.

i buy dragon age: the veilguard. i pre-install it. i wait for the exact release date and time. i launch it. i start a new game and enter the character creator. i soon reach the eyebrow choices and am faced with the most godawful creations ever known to mankind. i tear up as i choose the equivalent of two scorched caterpillars. welcome home
