Welcome! This blog is mainly about traditional Japanese dolls, including kokeshi, kimekomi dolls, hakata dolls, and washi dolls, among others. I'll also post information about netsuke, various Japanese crafts, and vintage Japanese dolls from time to time. Additionally, I'm someone who's just interested in Japanese dolls as opposed to an expert, so please feel free to correct me if I get things wrong. Enjoy! :-D

Two sets of hina dolls on display in Takahama, Gifu Prefecture. According to the original photographer, GP Witteveen, the set on the left is from 1965, while the set on the right is from 1910 (minus the two ceramic hina dolls on the fifth tier, I assume).

New Year Ikebana
Despite the cold, the sunshine on January 1st filled our bedroom with a glorious light that made the new year flowers and my Watanabe Masao kokeshi glow.

Kuribayashi Issetsu Kokeshi
A recently acquired kokeshi couple from the artist Kuribayashi Issetsu (栗林一雪). He was active through the 1960s into the late 1990s, and these are part of his early style.
The woodworking is remarkable, and the fine details in his brush work is exquisite. The subtle carving and inlaid enamel painting for their kimono adds a level of detail, many times above the typical plain finished, more commercial kokeshi.
We’re very happy to have them in our small collection.
