i think it's so funny that i've seen (indirectly at least) people complaining about shipping the love and deepspace guys together "taking away from the mc" because like. if xavier told me that he was into me and also felt like making out with rafayel in front of me my response would be to say "oh hell yeah" and then i would probably fujo tf out (in a nonbinary way)

The Shape of Rafayel (part 1)

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is one of my favorite movies ever. So of course, I can't help but think of my own version for Rafayel.

Imagine that the MC is the daughter of scientist who works with the military to create powerful weapons of war. After spending years hunting for the mythical Sea God from the ancient civilization of Lemuria, they have finally managed to capture him, taking him to a secret base. The MC, home from university and following in her father's footsteps, is there when they bring him in.

She is immediately drawn to him - he is not the monster that her father has made him out to be, but a . She even thinks that she can hear him speaking to her, inside her mind. The moment the god see her, he reacts violently. Soldiers move to subdue the asset, while MC is pushed out the lab for her own safety.

The experiments that await the Sea God...she didn't want to even think about it.

Her father orders her to forget what she's seen and instead focus on enjoy her vacation from university. But she can't do it. The God of the Sea has taken over her thoughts - for some reason she just can't get him out of her mind. Worse - somehow, she feels connected to him for reasons she cannot understand. She knows he's not a monster - he's powerful, yes, but not a monster - and thus, she wants to learn more about him on her own.

Imagine that MC uses her wiles to return to the lab without drawing her father's suspicion. The moment she returns to the lab, the God once again reacts to her. Rafayel is a stoic figure, the imposing God he was born to be. But there is a softness in his eyes the moment he sees her standing before him. A familiarity that both of them feel but don't quite understand.

The mystical markings all over his body become even brighter, more vibrant now that she is around. And the way his eyes bore into her soul...

She knew he wasn't meant to be here. And he knew that he'd finally found his savior...his fated bride.

He is powerful, and yet he is powerless. If he is to become a true God, a leader to his people, he must complete a ritual to get his powers back. But the longer he stays in this base, the more likely he is to die before that happens.

But she doesn't want that to happen. No...she won't let that happen.

Imagine that she hatches a plan to save him, knowing that her father will disown her if he finds out. As the daughter of the lead scientist, she knows the base like the back of her hand - knows even more than her father does. With the help of a few sympathetic workers (who loved MC more than they love of stern father), help her to release Rafayel into the seas behind the base. For her, that might be the end of it...until she loses her footing, falling into the sea right after him...

But of course, the God would never allow his tragedy to befall his bride.

She holds on tight and he wades through the waters, the currents once merciless and raging falling in line. She hangs on for dear life as the Lemurian Sea God cuts through the sea. She is terrified as plunge deeper and deeper into the depths...

Do not worry, my Bride... His voice is a soothing breeze, easing the worries from your whirling mind. I will never let you go.

She eases into his embrace as he continues to swim toward an unknown destination. She has no idea where they will end up or what will happen to them.

But there is one thing she knows for sure...

She is exactly where she should be...

By his side.
