Hi, i wanted to ask you if you could make a simple colouring tutorial or at least tell us how you do it? It always looks so awesome!

OKAY buckle up for some really lousy skin tutorial I concocted in like 15 minutes.

1. So you need to create a colour palette which I’d suggest use at least 5 swatches which you can always google for if you’re not very good colour picking or just create one of your own and experiment as you go. It’s good to add a highlight here (which I forgot to add on) but it’s basically one shade higher than the base. Second, find a ~master brush~. Okay ideally the more realistic you want to be, the more you should definitely add different kinds of brushes and especially those with textures. Now my rendering style is very different from a lot of typical digital artists and that’s mostly because I apply watercolour techniques which is mostly building a lot of layers with semi-opaque colours, or also known to somewhat be like airbrushing. Hence, the opacity on how hard or how light you press down with the pen does affect how much colour comes out. I’ve fixed a brush to behave like this all the time without the need to reduce the opacity and flow bar all the time. 

2. I think there are two ways to understand where to colour. It’s either you take a photograph and study where the light hits the subject and where shadows are casted (especially if you want to establish harsh lightings or certain situations) or, the lazier way when i dont really think about my source of light (bad eli), and base on makeup contouring. So just imagine you’re applying makeup here; bronzer on the hollows of your cheek, jawline around your hairline, highlighter on the tip of the nose, under the eyebrow, above the cheekbone and so on.

3. Using shade #1 and with a big brush, lightly brush over the largest portions to establish some simple contours. Because of the opacity of the brush, you can go over certain areas several times to darken it (think of it like a colour pencil, the harder you press down, the more pigments are applied)

4. Now it’s important to understand where to press harder and where to press lighter. Painting lighter will give the areas a softer blend and pressing hard down will create sharp edges and giving your shadows more depth. (using shade #2 here)

5. This is when you start to decrease your brush size and opacity (you can see above the toolbar my opacity is at 57%), using shadow #1. This is so you can paint over certain areas as it gets darker and darker. 

6. Remember, it’s all about building layers. Focus on areas like the eye socket, the chin, nostrils of the nose, jaw and hairline that requires the most shadows

7. Lastly, with the blush or accent colour, I’ve reduced it to 20% and lightly gone across her cheek as well as her eyes and her nose. And using the same colour i set it back to 100% and used it as her lip colours

So the breakdown of it will look like this:

I apply this technique to the rest of my artworks like clothes, hair and so on, though there are additional techniques with others since it can’t be 100% achieved purely on this approach. Hope this shitty tutorial helps!

An Old God from our homebrew game. "Oh wrathful Finley, the godess of nature. Tales of Finleys wrath and favor are plenty. Finley holds a particular fondness for the fae folk, and those who respect the world around them. Her symbol is a rolling orb, symbolizing a moving world. It is said that many mellina ago it was Finleys wrath that ended the rule of the old gods, though no evidence seems to cite why she would preform such an act on her brothers and sisters.
