The murders of the Rue Morgue.
Edgar Allan Poe.
   a) Brief historical context of the short story ´The Murders ...¨: Where does it take place? When? What was happening in the world? And in South America?
The story takes place in Paris at mid nineteen century. This century was defined mostly by the downfall of the totalitarian monarchies in Europe. For example in France, the “French Revolution” gave birth to the idea of a republic ruled by someone not “chosen by god” as the monarchs were called, and this gave way to a new character that ruled France until his capture, called Napoleon Bonaparte. The industrial revolutions also changed the way the world was inhabited; families that worked the fields started fleeing to the cities in search for better paid work.
In South America, folks were growing tired of the Spanish monarchy, and with the capture of Fernando VII they started realizing that they had an opportunity for freedom, opportunity that was take for the beginning of the fight for independence.
 b) Describe Dupin: What is he like? Justify your thoughts with passages from the story.
Auguste Dupin, was born in a wealthy family, but then reduced to a regular person driven only to fulfil the basic needs of any other person. He lives with an only friend who he met in a library while searching for a specific book. He lives with this only friend, who will stay for a period of time and has no intention of changing this. He is a very solitaire person. “Our seclusion was perfect. We admitted no visitors. Indeed the locality of our retirement had been carefully kept a secret from my own former associates; and it had been many
years since Dupin had ceased to know or be known in Paris. We existed
within ourselves alone.”
 c) Read this quote thoroughly: What happened before that? What happened next?
"We are possibly not giving this matter a fair trial," he said. "The paper is spread out upon a plane surface; but the human throat is cylindrical. Here is a billet of wood, the circumference of which is about that of the throat. Wrap the drawing around it, and try the experiment again"
I did so: but the difficulty was even more obvious than before. "This," I said, "is the mark of no human hand"
Before the quote, they were observing and analysing the body they`ve found searching for clues to determine the cause of death. They found hair evidence that did not appear to be human and then he asked his friend, the narrator, to hold the victim`s throat in order to match his hand grip to the marks left on the body. He also demonstrated that the grip was too firm for a normal human being. Then Dupin hands the narrator a sketch in which he concluded that a gorilla did all the killing since it matched the evidence he collected.

Usage of stories.

 Teaching English through Stories
Why is it useful to use stories in our teaching?
Children are considered natural language learners; according to second language acquisition theory, they can learn faster and with much less difficulty than adults, but they should be exposed to natural learning environments, to real communication situations and to special teaching practices that make learning a meaningful, enjoyable and lifelong process. Teaching should be focused on children and on the development of their communicative skills that will enable them to communicate meanings and messages in real social contexts.
The quantity and quality of the input children receive during their first learning stage is really important because it helps them to lay the foundation for their future learning. This is the reason teachers should give them a lot of qualitative input, which means that children should be surrounded by lots of listening and reading materials that will allow them to get familiar with the new language. This input should be comprehensible, natural and meaningful, and should be introduced little by little. A teacher should help children to understand the information they are exposed to, and also include new elements that permit children to advance in their learning process.
Two main sources from which students receive input are listening and reading. Storytelling and story reading become two powerful strategies in the early stages of language development because they provide learners with a lot of interesting and enriching input.
Language learners can benefit from storytelling because stories help them to develop the ability to understand spoken language and engage in thinking skills. The use of storytelling in the L2 classroom creates a good learning environment and provides meaningful and comprehensible input. Reading stories aloud allows children to make connections between oral language and the written word that represents it. Children like listening to stories over and over again; this repetition allows them to acquire certain language items and reinforce others unconsciously. Using stories allows teachers to introduce new vocabulary by exposing children to the language in different contexts, therefore, enriching their thinking skills and introducing them to the productive skills.

Letters in the sea.
2- Robert`s first intention to write is to communicate with his beloved sister who is waiting for him back at home. He often tells her how miserable he feels most of the time, he realises that this voyage that could last many years or that he might not even get the chance to go back home at all. He describes how his crew is very reliable and that he is quite satisfied with their performance, but still he found no friend in any of them. Yet feeling alone, he always keeps certain distance with his crew since he is the captain of all them and him belonging to a higher class, he has no business with his employees.
Mr Walton also writes to inform her of his every step on his journey to the north-pole, but he does not give much detail of his real motivation to sail to such a desolate place. His description of his journey is always full of comments of how rough this endeavour is but also of how strong his desire of seeing it through. There is no real explaining of his final goal or why he sails to such place, but he does say to her that no matter if he is successful or he fails, he will be at sea many months, or even years. His intentions are quite mysterious, but he is confident on his chances for success and how they will change the course of the world.
On every letter, he always refers of how difficult communication is and how difficult it is for him to despatch letters. On one of them, he describes how a merchant that he meets on his trip is asked to deliver his letter to her. Each message is sent months apart from the one that came before and from remote places of the world, the first one is sent from St Petersburg while the second is sent from his second stop, Archangel, a city in Russia where he hires his crew and ship. However, his situation never brings his spirit down and he keeps on sailing further into unknown territories to achieve his mysterious objective.
3- In my opinion, the author’s intention to star her book in this letter format is to differ from the basic book format and also to create an atmosphere of mystery on the beginning of the story.
4-In the 1800`s, the world was marvelled by the arrival of science and how this would affect everyone`s life. The appearance of the steam engine catapulted England`s industry in a direction that they never expected. Steam engines gave birth to the locomotive which facilitated transportation across the land for passengers and also for cargo.
Also, the writings of Jules Berne had great influence on how society perceived this new technology and how far they could go and explore with it.
