nora-beckk:
Nora wasn’t looking forward to her shift tonight, putting up with people was one of the last things she felt she should be doing in such a piss mood. Maybe it was something in the air that caused her to dread going into work, the weather sure as hell wasn’t helping. The rain started just as she was running into work, the back door ajar for the kitchen staff. Navigating the back she grabbed some pens and an apron and chatted with some co-workers who were taking off. Lucky them. She thought to herself as she clocked in. Some people were chatting about a storm rolling through, her mind elsewhere she didn’t pay much mind and began to prep for her shift. Filling the ice buckets, stocking the bar with stuff from the walk in cooler she brought it up front to where some people were idly watching the news, playing pool or chatting. For a Thursday it as sorta dead, she looked around wondering where the usual crew was. The loud beep of the national weather alert came across the tv, causing her to look up and unmute it with the nearby remote. Watching intently she felt her breath catch in her throat. Not only was she stuck at work, but work while there was a freaking tornado outside.
With the new breaking a group of people ushered their way out the door dropping cash for their tabs and heading to their cars. Some staff who had children at home decided to take off in which Nora urged them too. Wiping the bar down she looked up and her heart skipped a beat. She cursed herself for her body’s reaction to seeing him- why was it doing that? Clearing her throat she called his name, “Nick?” her brows furrowed, she didn’t expect him to be here especially after the weather news. “What are you doing here?” she asked kicking herself for the obvious answer. “I mean- with the tornado and all that..” she asked. Her manager called to her, turning back to him she offered a soft half smile. “Hold that thought.” going to talk to Gregg she nodded, and it was like the universe heard her cry and was using all it’s effort to get her out of there. Returning to Nick was a shocked smile she leaned against the bar. “Okay so if the bar suddenly gets swept up and we end up in Oz that would make a lot of sense right now because.. I just got cut. We’re closing because of the weather. It’s apparently on the path to the bar and we’ve got to go.” she looked at him almost not wanting to ask in lieu of not wanting to cross a line. But taking a breath she decided it was a decent thing to do, “Fuck it. Do you wanna come take shelter at my place and wait this out? I’m sure it’s just going to breeze by and we’ll be fine. But maybe I can grab something for us to drink and we can kill time? What do you say?” @nicklander
-
The mood that the baseball match was providing was abruptly interrupted by the weather alert. The boisterous cheers and screams were traded with concerned whispers. Nicholas looked at his phone, the same alert issued there and the first thing he does is send a text to his mother, who after a few seconds assures him that she's fine. Luckily one of his sisters decided to take some time off their busy schedule to help with the care of their mother. Still, Nick asks her if she wants him to go to her house to which she replies no and that he should just go home since it's closer to where he is. Everyone at the bar quickly starts leaving the place and he's about to do the same when he notices Nora behind the bar. He didn't even realize when she got in and granted she was one of the reasons why he had chosen to come to this particular bar. It was a stupid decision, to keep playing with fire when he damn well knew how both of them would end up burning in the end. He has some drinks on him but he's still sober enough to know better than to approach her, especially amidst the chaos.
"I was here with a friend," he says with a restrained smile because this is not really the time to smile yet he can't help it at the sight of her. He's about to speak when her manager calls her and his eyes land on the TV screen, still issuing the alert. "I've been in worse places than Oz." He smirks looking back at her. He waits for a second before bidding goodbye and going back home, and the thought of inviting her over crosses his mind but perhaps it wasn't the time. Fortunately for him, she has the same thought and she's not afraid to say it. "This is a pick-up line I never thought I would get but I have to say a tornado is a great excuse," he jokes before nodding. "Since you are providing the drinks, how could I say no?" Outside the trees creaked and the dust starts to whip up into the air. "But really, I think it's more than a breeze and we should go now."

| | jude’s specialty in life was detaching himself from near everyone in his life. he was estranged from his parents, often didn’t talk to old friends. there was a time in life when jude was happier and kinder than he currently was- and that’s the jude so many people who know him often harken back to. jude was alone, thankfully, sadie actually at their mother’s for once so it gave jude a few days off to do whatever he wanted. and what that entailed was a solo walking adventure down king street in the historic district. he was just about to leave when the door opened, causing jude to clench his fists about to punch the intruder when he realised who it was. “the fuck are you just letting yourself in here like?” he hissed, dropping his fist to his side. “i was going to king street,” he replied with a shrug.
-
“i’m sorry, i tried to knock but heard no answer so naturally i had to see you were alive,” he says with a smile. “but you should lock your door, i would hate to be interviewed for a true crime show.” it was easy for nick to fall back into the old habit of being friendly towards his cousin, even if he still felt a bit guilty about cutting him out of his life like he did with everyone but out of all the people he knew that jude would be the one to understand his reasoning. “want some company? i really have nothing to do and i’m going crazy living here.”

maggie smiled at nick as she sat down. “well i’m glad you’ve been enjoying it” she said as she took a sip of her water while she waited for the rest of her meal to arrive. “oh you would have missed the fireworks, but of course you can” maggie said smiling. “so what’s new with you. i feel like its been ages since we have seen one another”
-
“you’re right! that would be a crime, so i might stay just to see the fireworks,” he says with a chuckle. “uh, not much. i’ve been working at the country club and waiting for the semester to start.” it wasn’t his ideal situation but it was life for the moment. “how about you? are you missing new york already?”

nora-beckk:
There was a part of her that felt guilt in even being here right now, on his couch, sipping a beer, soon to be curled up into him. However, there was also a part of her that knew life was short- fleeting- even and why should she deprive herself of something that in the long run will cause more good than harm. Jude and her were in an okay place, neither one of them jumping to get back into something serious together but enjoying a familiar rendezvous here and there for old times sake. And now with Nick and her’s little agreement this was filling the desire and need she’d get without having to hurt someones feelings in the process. To put it simply, Nick was easy. Not in a sexual sense, but in a comital sense. There small talk was pleasant, their sex was great, and they both seemed to know where to draw the line and that was refreshing for her. Nora didn’t share this little union with her ex, and simply she didn’t feel the need to. It wasn’t hurting anyone and she was quite enthused with keeping Nick to herself in all aspects. Maybe it was the sense of passion and mystery that he exuded that gave her a rush whenever she was with him- or maybe it was something that she’d never allow herself to truly question. Biting her bottom lip she nodded, “Not the rides and games type I see..” she smirked titling her head and scrunching her nose slightly when she tried to imagine Nick riding a Ferris Wheel or playing a game. Thanking him for the beer she took a sip, the drink easing some of the unexpected nerves she had around him for some odd reason. Leaning into him she casually sipped, relaxing into the couch and his shoulder. “No. What? Not at all.” she almost spit her drink with a laugh. Pursing her lips she looked up at him and smirked. “I just- I don’t know you’re kind of mysterious.” she raised her eyebrows on that last word. “And besides.. most of the time we’re either too drunk or too naked to really entertain like this.” she looked away. “I mean shit- not that I’m complaining but.. I can’t go falling in love with you Nick. It’s not in the plans.” she teased. “Also for the record my impression of you isn’t terrible, it was but.. I think some things changed that for the better.”
-
Out of sight, out of mind. That's how he dwells with that pang of guilt that plows right through him. If Jude didn't know then how could be hurt or upset by it? It's not like this dynamic was going to last forever. All of Nick's plans in Charleston were short-term, his long terms plans were already set somewhere else, far from here. He liked, however, that he and Nora seemed to be on the same page when it came to their relationship. It was purely physical, hedonistic. The idea of forming a friendship with her, though, made him a bit nervous because no matter what that brought feelings to the table but he liked to believe they were both mature enough to not let it go that far. "It's not my thing," he says with a shrug. "Did anyone win anything for you in a game?" The conversation seems to be flowing in a very amicable way but then she leans into him and he can hear his heart thumping away inside his chest. It was much easier to avoid that when they got right into action rather than building the anticipation. Eyes narrow as he looks at her, not believing her shocked expression. "Mysterious? I don't know what you're talking about, I'm an open book." It's a lie and both of them know that but still, a soft laugh escapes past his lips. "I'm fine with going back to that, I just thought we should work on the friendship part of this." He rolls his eyes at her comment, taking another sip of his drink. "And what's so wrong about falling in love?" he says dramatically as he grabs her hand. "So, you admit that you didn't like me. Either way, I'm glad I've been able to change your mind."

“that’s fair,” he says before sitting next to her. he was just planning on getting a drink and then heading home but he could spare a few minutes to catch up with maggie. “yeah, it’s been fun,” he replies even if his tone doesn’t really match the answer. “i was actually gonna go home soon but if you don’t mind i can keep you company.”

nora-beckk:
It was an odd change of events that Nick and Nora had gone through now that she looked back on it. From meeting at awkward family gatherings where she was Jude’s plus one to now spending late nights intertwined in each-others bedsheets. It wasn’t as if it was her plan the entire time, in fact it was the last thing she saw happening between the two. If she were being honest when she met Nick she could barely stand him. For some reason she never saw the appeal he had on woman and often would find herself rolling her eyes or muttering under her breath at things he said. But one day it was like a switch went off, after her breakup of sorts with Jude she ran into him and suddenly didn’t want to tune him out. In fact, it was the entire opposite. All she remembered next was that one thing led to another and here they were now, friends with a very nice benefit. It was a nice balance they seemed to have fallen into and lately she found herself enjoying even the times that they weren’t naked and full of lust. In their own way they were developing a friendship, even if its origin story was a bit unusual. Sitting on couch criss cross she looks over as he made his way to the fridge, watching his tall stature fill the room. “Yeah I did, very short lived though I had to work later that night. How about you? Grab any good food there or something?”. Nora swallowed, a seductive smirk playing across her lips. She knew they were trying this whole friendship thing out but man did she want to just rip his clothes off every second. “A beer sounds good thanks.” she eyed him turning around to twiddle with her shirt. They never really did much talking, but they were trying. “You know Lander, your quite the host. I’m shocked.” she teased.
-
He has some faint memories of meeting Nora at a family gathering but even then Nick didn't even bother to really start a conversation with her. In fact, he didn't want to talk with anyone in the room. Being around his family really brought the worst of him and along with that came a very petulant attitude. His way of coping with his dislike for his family was through thinking he was too good for any of them and in a way that included Nora. It all changed so fast, running into each other and suddenly indifference was exchanged for lust. Of course, no pleasure comes free of charge. Guilt washed him over because even though he wasn't as close as before with Jude, it still was a form of betrayal. If only it was easy to put a stop to all this he would, but he's too entranced by this agreement to let it go. "No, I skipped it. Carnivals are not really my thing," he says with a shrug. He leaves out the fact that he had to go and stay with his mother as she wasn't having a good day but bringing that up would be a mood killer, plus he didn't like talking about it. That's why he liked being around Nora, she made him forget any issue and above all, she didn't want to get any deep conversations. It was all fun, no bullshit between them. In a way, the kind of friendship he also was looking for, so it worked both ways. He opens both beers and comes back to sit next to her on the couch, handing her a beer. It's hard to continue the conversation when she's just inches away, giving him those smiles that drive him crazy but he takes a deep breath and a sip of the beer and tries to get back into the conversation. "Why are you shocked? Do you have such a bad impression of me?" he asks with a chuckle.

FOR: @heyyjvde
there was a time when jude and nick were a lot closer. probably, one of the few family members nicholas didn't actively try to detach from. despite different personalities, the two cousins had somewhat of a friendship up until nick went to college and he decided to cut communication with most people, family included. now back in charleston, he figured if one relationship was worth fixing was that one with jude. although, so far it wasn't going great as nick was already lying to jude by not disclosing he was hooking up with his ex. some things were better left undisclosed. "hey," he says as he enters his cousin's place, uninvited. "what are you up to? i have some time off, so maybe we can grab a beer and catch up if you're down for that."

FOR: @nora-beckk
he never knew how to act around nora even before they started their physical relationship, nick always assumed he really didn't have much in common with her, so why go out of his way to get to know her? yet going from relative strangers to friends with benefits meant he had to make the effort to work on the 'friendship' part. by inviting nora over, both knew how this hang out would end but he figured he would lose nothing by trying to be more friendly and interested in establishing a conversation. "did you go to the carnival?" he asks in an attempt to make some small talk. he stands up from the couch, giving her a small smile as he walks to fridge to get a beer. “do you want one or anything else?” his tone remains nonchalant yet unnatural. it’s fairly obvious that he’s trying too hard but he can only hope she doesn’t notice or doesn’t say anything about it. even relationships with no strings attached were complicated. it was a no win situation, really.

the girl needed a breather from all the activities and carnival festivities that were taking place behind her. she smiled as she sat on of of the bar stools. she knew it was going to be a great night and needed decent food to get her through. she looked through the menu of the little burger place that they had before deciding on just the cheese burger cause she had seen it come out and it looks so good. the girl smiled up at the person she thought was the waiter only to see nick. “hey you. how are you?” @nicklander
-
as much fun as the carnival could be, nick didn’t really feel in a festive mood. after all, he was still grieving the idea that he had to put his plans on hold and while the reason behind that was a justifiable one, he couldn’t help but feel a bit bitter about it. he’s about to get a drink when he runs into a familiar face, one he never thought of finding here but he was happy to see her. “hey! i’m good, just getting a drink and you?” he says, a hint of a smile starting to play on his lips. “are you having fun?”

it unlike farrah to be have a modicum of respect for someone , but nick is a different story . nothing is sitting well with her right now . not the way he’s talking to her ( as if nothing even happened ) , not the way she’s talking to him and definitely not the underlying hurt that’s putting the venom in her words . obviously she feels bad about it but she can’t stop her blood from near boiling . it’s all just so contradictory to the promises they’d left unsaid so long ago . why would she be okay with this ? she sits up then , sliding her sunglasses off the bridge of her nose to get a better look at him . “ well when i was in high school i had a thing with this guy . we’d watch the office together or rather , it would watch us , you know ? well long story short he moved away and never fucking talked to me again so i get bad vibes from the show now . ” she responds cooly and picks up the tie-dye sleeve cooler holding her flavored seltzer . “ crazy how one person can ruin things you used to enjoy . ” she shrugs her shoulders like it’s a casual statement instead of a dig . she waits patiently for his next words , heart thundering so loudly in her chest she’s sure it’ll leap right out . his admission is followed by a genuine laugh . unable to come up with the proper words to explain how she’s feeling , the femme opts for silence . really, nothing webster could define that’d speak to how she’s feeling , so she doesn’t try . knowing nick and knowing her , farrah figures her eyes will do the talking for a few seconds longer . “ oh yeah , the party is going great . i’m so happy to see you . ”
-
suddenly approaching her seems like a big mistake, as if he had just willingly opened the pandora box knowing that only chaos would ensue. it was too late to stop it and he flushes against a moment he brought upon himself, in hindsight. the harshness dripping from her tone does not go unnoticed either. he can tell she's been drinking and that only makes feels as though he shrinks in size entirely, his insides curling up as he listens in silence. in typical fashion, nick analyzes his next move as if it was a game of chess. although, really, there seems to be no way to win this game. in what seems like a rookie mistake, nick sits down next to her, vulnerable and not ready to counter any attack on her part. "he sounds like a real asshole," he says in a feeble attempt to bring some kind of humor into the situation. but then farrah continues, her dagger-sharp words feel like a stab at his chest and any speck of humor is gone. "but then again, maybe he was scared to tell you how he felt." the confession feels like razors to his throat and he can only hope that she's drunk enough to forget this conversation. if only he could tell her that he thought of texting her almost every day, but the damage is done and despite the years gone by all the feelings seem as present as before. "i should have told you i wasn't planning to call." an admission of guilt but not quite an apology.

alone is something new for farrah. she’d always been the sweet girl at school with no shortage of friends and invitations to the most exclusive parties, even if it was courtesy of dianne. she couldn’t even remember the last time she wasn’t on some sort of team, whether it was the gymnastics team from her youth or leading the bake sale. but as of late, it sort of feels like that’s all faded away. while she’s grown up, the same can’t be said for many of her closest girlfriends. it’s an arena she’s never known before and she doesn’t know why she’s been thrown into it, but regardless, she’s here and she has to deal with it somehow, even if it means isolating herself at the beach with a latte and novel in hand. but while she feels so far removed from her past, there are some things she just can’t shake. nick, evidently, is one of them. despite all her best efforts to just forget everything that could have beenand let him live the life he chose for himself, he’s popping up like the ghost of christmas past. ‘ are you talking to me? ’ she responds, seconds after regaining her composure. she’s focused on her book, so when he comes stumbling up out of nowhere, she’s scared. it could be anyone, but thankfully, it’s just him. a man she knows but a stranger nonetheless. ‘ i’d like to think i’m more original than that. it would probably say ‘ if you like the office, please don’t contact me’ . ’ she explains like the strange fluttering in her stomach isn’t distracting at all. ‘ a very long time, ’ she insists, not letting her eyes stray from her page for even a second. ‘ you stopped calling. glad to see you’re alive . ‘
-
a shaky feeling inhabiting his body seems to grow more prominent once farrah is in view. he tries his best to not make it obvious how her sole presence affects him. there’s a lingering feeling that makes him almost apologize, for what? he’s unsure. perhaps for never having the courage to tell her how he felt or for cutting all communication with anyone from his past, sadly including farrah in that list as if she was just another person. except standing right here in front of her, he realizes he wishes he could see her as nothing but ordinary, it would be easier to ignore the yearning feeling he had in her presence. “wow, not an office fan? i think i’d say in mine ‘if you’re into hiking, don’t contact me’” he laughs but that doesn’t ease the tension. then there it is. passive reproach. for a moment he remains silent before answering, the only sound the gentle roll of the ocean, the brushing of sand beneath their feet. “i know i did,” he finally replies, lips parted as if he was about to follow up with an excuse but what’s the point? none of them would be true. he knew what he was doing when he deleted farrah’s number. back then it was easier to just erase any connection with the past he was trying to move from. “are you enjoying the party?” just like that he hopes that such an average question can change the tension that could be felt in the air.
