Empress UlaNara (乌拉那拉皇后)
Among the most controversial empresses in Chinese imperial history, Empress Nara stands out prominently. Little is known about her early childhood, upbringing, or even her personal name. What we know for sure is that she came from the influential Ula Nara clan, one of the most prominent Jurchen (later Manchu) families of the time.
Ulanara’s journey to the throne of the empress began as a consort to the Qianlong Emperor. After the death of his first wife, Empress Xiaoxianchun,Ulanara was elevated to the status of Empress in 1750. However, her relationship with the emperor was never as affectionate as that of his first empress. Despite her new rank, she seemed to live in the shadow of her predecessor, a factor that may have contributed to the eventual breakdown of her relationship with Qianlong.
It is not known why exactly caused the estrangement of the pair. Everything fell apart in 1765 during an imperial tour to southern china when the empress, for unknown reasons allegedly cut a piece of her hair as a sign of retaliation.
That action would forever seal her fate as then Qianlong publicly denounced her of her title, stripped her of all power and sent her to exile
Empress Ulanara died shortly after her disgrace in 1766, while still exiled from court life. Although she was buried in the imperial tombs, her burial rites were notably diminished compared to those of other empresses, reflecting her fall from favor.
Nara is really my favorite empress, you wouldn’t exactly expect women of that time and especially that rank to behave in such a manner but i so get it (she was just a girl), anyways, tragic but fascinating.
(it is also said all her portraits where destroyed so we don’t know if this is actually her)

The Chinese in Latin America
The majority of people are unaware of the spread of the chinese peoples in many caribbean and latin american countries. Countries such as Guyana Suriname and Peru have a significant population of chinese inhabitants dating back to the 19th century. To put it in frame, celebrities such as Central Cee (guyanese-chinese and Irish) are of such ancestry.
Suriname 🇸🇷
Suriname, as most aren’t aware, is a small yet culturally fascinating nation that defies all odds. Located in the northeastern part of South America, Suriname stands out as the only Latin American country with Dutch as its official language. Adding to its linguistic charm, Sranan Tongo, a local creole language, is also widely spoken.
Chinese immigration to Suriname began in the mid-19th century, with the first wave arriving as indentured laborers to work on plantations, today they are well adjusted to suriname’s cultural and societal tapestry.
Guyana 🇬🇾
Guyana, Guyana is situated on the northeastern coast of South America, bordered by suriname among many. Its capital city is Georgetown and its oficial language is english making it unique among latin american countries. Guyana has a diverse population with significant ethnic groups including Indo-Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian, and mixed-race communities.
Chinese immigration to Guyana also began in the mid-19th century, with Chinese laborers arriving to work on sugar plantations. Over time, many transitioned to owning businesses and contributing to the country's economic development.
Peru 🇵🇪
It is situated in the southwestern part of the latin american continent. The capital city, Lima, is renowned for its culinary scene, blending indigenous, Spanish, and Asian influences. Peru is also known for its vibrant traditions, colorful festivals, and the preservation of Quechua culture and language.
Chinese immigrants, primarily from the Guangdong province, initially arrived in Peru to work as laborers in agriculture, railroads, and guano mining. Over time, they settled in urban areas, particularly Lima, and established thriving businesses, including the popular "chifa" restaurants that blend Chinese and Peruvian culinary traditions.

Flowers and the Song dynasty (960-1279)
I can admit my admiration is driven mostly to Qing and Ming dynasties but fashion wise i would have to pick the Song dynasty (960-1279).
The Song dynasty, naturally as it was the successor of the Tang dynasty otherwise known as the Golden Age of China, was a literal and spiritual renaissance period of china which is also reflected in its garments and general clothing.
Both men and women used to use flowers to garnish their hair as flowers were seen as a connection to nature, elegance and a refined character.
Men, usually the elites used to adorn their heads with flowers and each flower had a different meaning.
The plum blossom represented resilience and purity whereas the chrysanthemum represented longevity and nobility.
Flowers were not only worn but also used in home decoration and as offerings in religious and ancestral rites.
For women flowers represented feminist and of course connection to nature. Commonly worn flowers included peonies, lotuses, plum blossoms, orchids, and chrysanthemums.
Just like in men, each flower had a different connotation, for example, the peony symbolized wealth and honor, while the lotus represented purity and spiritual enlightenment.
Generally people wore flowers during important events such as the Spring Festival or the Dragon Boat Festival.

ohhh wow you're so cool wtf.. how did you become fluent in chinese? it's such a difficult language to learn. i speak cantonese but I can't read or write to save my life lol
In order to become “fluent” u need to be obsessed with the language, the culture, the people..
I wish i had something different to tell you but you really need to indulge yourself in the culture in order to become one with the language you’re speaking.
I once read somewhere a fellow language learner and expert said :” I love learning languages but part of you becomes part of the group of the people that speak it, and that can be very frustrating, like a cultural schizophrenia” I’ve never felt more den

”年年有余”
nián nián yǒu yú (year year have excess) Every year more than
lit. (may you) have abundance year after year
In China, during the Chinese New Year’s eve feast fish is a staple. It is a symbol of luck and prosperity and it is seen so by the majority.
Fish in mandarin is 鱼 (yû) pronounced the same way as 余 (yú)( remain n.) just with different tones.
so this phrase is used as an omen of good luck and a reminder to everyone of course to leave some fish on their plates in order for the new year to be prosperous.

how do you know so much abt chinese history ._.
I was always very interested in the culture since a young age, in all cultures really but china captured me a lot having grown up in Queens
When i got older, i started researching more and more mostly on youtube and wikipedia, i am also fluent in chinese and i learned so much through the language itself too as chinese languages are very symbolic and behold a lot of cultural significance
My fascination grew even more when i discovered the forbidden city, having never been to China myself i searched and searched for years and well now i know almost everything there is to know about it.

🪡MIAO EMBROIDERY 苗繡
✏️The Miao are among the larger ethnic populations in China, they are mostly concentrated in Guizhou Province in the southwest, where subgroups are identified by their dress and embroidery motifs, such as “Big Flower Miao” and “Small Flower Miao.” Working with silk and cotton thread, as well as horsehair, embroiderers adorn cuffs, sleeves, collars, and tunic fronts with designs of mythical animals (dragons and phoenixes) and ordinary insects, fish, and flowers. These designs are not only decorative; more importantly, many record daily life, life cycle events, and community legends and history.

I was recently in Corfu island in Greece and we visited the museum of asian arts which is the only one that exists in the country.
It had some very interesting viewpoints on chinese history and arts (unfortunately there weren’t any garments) but still a very fruitful collection on the chinese civilization.
