Mythical creatures in the Forbidden City 🐉
The Forbidden City was often adorned with different type of animal statues both real and oftentimes mythical! Each of these animals all had a different symbolism and history surrounding them ✨✨
The Dragon (龙-lóng)
The Dragon was always associated with imperial power and specifically The Emperor, you could mostly find it near the emperors living quarters or even on the throne! The dragon used by the emperor had 5 claws while the rest had 4, if someone else used the five clawed dragon they could be accused of treason
Qilin (麒麟)
The Qilin was used in the forbidden city to guard important areas and to signify peace and righteousness
It’s also depicted on the famous Japanese beer Kirin Ichiban!!
鸱吻(chīwěn)
Those dragon-like creatures where placed on the rooftops of the forbidden city as to protect against fires
Symbolism: Water and fire protection
獬豸(xiezhi)
This mythical beast represents justice and law, it is said to be able to distinguish between innocent and guilt and attack the guilty, rarely depicted but incorporated into the architectural design。

Empress Xiao'aizhe of the Ming Dynasty (1621-1627)
Lady Zhang was born sometime in the year 1606 in Xiangfu County, Henan. She was selected to be the primary spouse and empress of the Tianqi Emperor in 1621. Though only 15/16 years old when she became empress, Lady Zhang was described as being very calm, straightforward, and strict but fair in palace affairs.
She tried very hard to sway the emperor away from the influence of the eunuch Wei Zhongxian and the wet nurse Madame Ke, who are suspected to have caused the miscarriages of all the imperial concubines, but was unable to do so. Lady Zhang would become pregnant in 1623, but sadly she miscarried.
Wei Zhongxian and Madame Ke did their best to cause her downfall by accusing her father of piracy as they could not outright attack the empress. Luckily for Lady Zhang this plot would fail and she would continue to hold her position as Empress Consort.
When the Tianqi Emperor died in 1627 there was a succession crisis as all of his children had been miscarried or died in infancy. Wei Zhongxian attempted to usurp the throne by trying to convince some of the imperial concubines to claim to be pregnant, and then get pregnant by a male accomplice of his. Lady Zhang successfully thwarted his plans by quickly securing the Tianqi Emperor’s younger brother as the new emperor. The Chongzhen Emperor would title her as Empress Yi’an in thanks.
In April 1644 the capital would be attacked by the rebel army led by Li Zicheng. The Chongzen Emperor would order the female family members to be killed to avoid being captured. Lady Zhang and Empress Zhou would commit suicide.
Titles:
Lady Zhang (from 1606)
Empress (from 1621)
Empress Yi’an (from 1627)
Empress Xiao’aizhe (posthumous from 1644)

I recently came across a very interesting article discussing why the forbidden city has survived this many earthquakes and natural disasters.
Usually, high risk areas are located near two different tectonical plates as they frequently collide, such places include Japan,Indonesia,Chile and Turkey but for some reason Beijing is found to be incredibly shaky. The Forbidden City, this hundred thousand acre magnificent piece of art of the ancient world has sustained little to no injuries during its whole 800 year history. The secret doesn’t lie in its material but rather at its foundations.
Surprisingly enough, in the foundations of the Forbidden city lie Ming dynasty bricks and its roof is made entirely out of wood, so how can it stay so resilient? Well, as to stabilise the roof on too of the building wooden pieces are “glued” together like a puzzle and however much they’re shaken, they never fall apart! Also, the laws of Physics play a huge role, because of the tremendous weight of the roof, when the foundation is moved towards the right direction for example, the roof inclines towards the left, also the pylons of the building are not rooted into the soil but rather, they are just made to stand.
Inside the large Halls of the forbidden city, lie huge pylons that go up to 8 meters, these are actually not human made but they are a special kind of tree brought over all the way from the south of China, Sichuan. The barks of the tree are also not embedded into the soil but they rather just stand as to not break off when moved by earthquakes.
Now, the original construction plan for the Forbidden City is unfortunately lost and we do not know if the architects of the time had the earthquakes in mind when constructing the mural but we guess that they did.
