Just a little more Potential to finish off 2024
Every so often the latest version of this comes around on my dash, and gives me a great reminder to check in on myself and my habits. It started with @shrinkingblonde's “Full Potential Challenge”: a list of self-care checkpoints for every day, broken down by morning, afternoon and evening. Alas, working on that many habits at once woke my “Monster From The Id”’, who immediately panicked. The Monster thinks that, given that my current bad self-care habits correlate with being currently alive, the best chance of staying alive is to change nothing. The Monster isn’t very bright, but it’s powerful.
So I made a minimal list, and took as long as it took to change (three years!), and I made some nice new habits! A year later I rebooted with seven habits to maintain and three new habits to work on. A year and a half after that -- last spring -- I rebooted again with a new ADHD diagnosis & treatment and a big job-change and corresponding changes in targets. Among other things, my dietician and psychologist recommend NOT setting "every day" goals, but go for "x" days per week and then ramp up "x". Having a "health care team" sounds awfully privileged with so many Americans on this site, but really guys socialized healthcare rocks!
Now, there's 60 days until New Year's, so let's go again:
"X" MORNINGS PER WEEK
Stretch. First thing. Really give your body enough time to wake up. Touch your toes. Roll out your shoulders. Do not hit snooze! (Need to refocus! X=2)
Brush your teeth (Doing great!) and floss (well, better than not at all and my dental hygienist is happy) X=7, I'm rocking this one.
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!! X=2
Cleanse and moisturize your skin and do at least minimal makeup (Need to refocus! X=2)
Minimal Morning Prayer: Urnuigh an Tighearna, Guidhe airson Sith, Guidhe airson Grais (I've struggled with my prayer life for decades. Still struggling. The minimal approach worked with skin care and makeup; maybe it will work here. X=2)
EVERY AFTERNOON
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!! (Such a hard habit!) X=2
Do 10BX. X=4
EVERY EVENING
mentally review what needs to be done tomorrow, and identify (or find a way to insert) something fun. (Nope, not great at all! X=2)
Brush & floss (Great! X=7)
cleanse, moisturize (also not great! X=2)
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!! (See above! X=2
Crawl into bed at least 7 hours before the alarm is set for. (X=2)
Eat and drink lightly and stop well before bedtime (coming along; X=6).
WEEKENDS are just like weekdays, now that I'm retired.

where's that masterpost of quotes that have no right going as hard as they do. I'd like to submit "Protagonism is best left to teens and the insane"

Idea: sew some cute little moths with scrap fabrics and sew them on holes you have on your clothes so you can keep wearing them :)

I know a company that does both these things and no surprise, when you shop there, the employees are always miserable and agitated. You should kill your managers in such situations imo. The only reason I receive treatment slightly above this is i'm lucky enough to have managers who are also bothered by these business practices. The water one is especially bad if you have heat intolerance, I was so sick regularly before I switched to a department with more leniency regarding water.
Depending on where you live these things may violate labor laws though so if you're in the same situation look into it. However in my experience any labor law violations happen without consequence regardless

we go through this every hurricane season but the way people will find any excuse to point the finger at the victims of natural disasters and say cruel shit like "fuck around and find out" like it's not horrifying having to leave behind your home and all your belongings and potentially your pets with the full knowledge that there might not be anything to come back to after... ignoring that there are people that don't have a car or the money to evacuate, ignoring disabled people who have no way to get out, ignoring people that can't find places for their pets to shelter, ignoring people that have medical equipment that can't be moved or replaced, etc... and even if someone stays behind solely because they want to, they still don't deserve to suffer.
as someone who worked extensively in disaster response previously, it is not easy to "just" evacuate, and the relief that comes afterwards is intentionally difficult to obtain. and already the forces that be are trying to spin this narrative that the victims are at fault, to put the blame on them so that if (probably when) people are forced to resort to looting (because the aid never comes) everyone will nod and agree that they're all bad people and deserved it... rather than acknowledging the fact that there was no attempt to make the evacuation accessible and safe for everyone, no guarantee that aid will be waiting for them when they return to a home that has been swept away... no empathy for the fact that these people's entire lives are potentially destroyed with no safety net to catch them.
